The “Three’s Company” cast got back together for the first time in decades, all to pay tribute to the ‘70s sitcom.
This past weekend, four cast members — Joyce DeWitt (Janet), Richard Kline (Larry), Priscilla Barnes (Terry) and Jenilee Harrison (Cindy) — came together to film a special for classic-TV network Antenna TV in honor of the show’s (gulp!) 40th anniversary.
For the special, the actors shared their behind-the-scenes memories of the show, becoming emotional telling stories about series star John Ritter, who died unexpectedly in 2003.
Suzanne Somers, an original cast member of "Three’s Company,” was not included in the special.
The comedy series aired on ABC from 1977 until 1984, and was one of that network’s top-rated series for many of the years it was on the air.
Antenna TV’s "Three’s Company" 40th Anniversary Marathon Rendezvous will feature clips from the cast interviews. The marathon will begin at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 11, and run through 6 a.m. ET Monday, March 13.
king of comedy 02-13-2017, 06:58 PM Happy 40th 3's Company!
Retro4Life 02-13-2017, 09:59 PM Really a pity that Suzanne isn't involved. No aspersion one way or the other, but when I think of Three's Company, I definitely think of her.
Very cool to see all the rest together, though!
Anna Karenina 02-13-2017, 10:35 PM Remember when Suzanne and Joyce made up for the cameras? Emphasis on the words "made up". ;)

Perhaps they didn't offer her enough money?

Well, let's give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she had a scheduling conflict! ;)

I wonder if she declined to participate or if the show declined to ask her. Or if the others, um, *suggested* she not be included.
If Suzanne were there it would make for juicy television but would be an awkward situation for everyone. Nothing like sitting together with the people who replaced you.
Retro4Life 02-14-2017, 07:54 PM Isn't each episode a marathon?
Not a fan, I take it?
Heenan Fan 02-15-2017, 02:59 PM Suzanne is the only living member I care about besides maybe Richard Kline. I'm thinking if this turns into the Joyce and Priscilla show, I may pass.
Ron Ron 02-15-2017, 06:38 PM I hope someone puts up the special on youtube. I don't have Antenna. I have to LOL at them not including Suzanne Summers again. The make up must have been for the cameras. And there is no way if Suzanne cared about John would she miss the reunion for money or scheduling conflict.
BigManMike 02-28-2017, 02:11 PM I see the schedule and it's very weird because they're skipping around and not going I order.
JackJanetChrissy 02-28-2017, 06:02 PM I hope someone puts up the special on youtube. I don't have Antenna.
The special reunion show will be available on the Antenna YouTube channel.
The full cast interview will be available online March 11 on Antenna TV’s YouTube channel youtube.com/antennatv and on Facebook at facebook.com/antennatv

That's not working for me. I didn't even know that Antenna had a YouTube page.
JackJanetChrissy 02-28-2017, 09:08 PM I copied and pasted from an article. It doesn't work for me, either, but I can get to their Facebook page okay. Time to use Dr. Google.

Don't confuse people...the first link is for Priscilla Barnes' podcast episode that also features the Three's Company cast and comes out tomorrow.
Second link is the EXTRA article about the March 11 Antenna TV marathon, but it gives no info on where to stream the Antenna TV reunion online.
I guess I will just watch the Antenna TV Facebook page on March 11 to see the interview since there is no Antenna TV YouTube account I can find. Thanks.
Chocolate Moose 03-01-2017, 10:36 AM For me, the show was Suzanne and John.

FYI I asked Antenna TV and they said they are still setting up their YouTube channel but will have it available by March 11. They will also post the video on their public Facebook page, which you'll be able to view even without a Facebook account. Will keep people updated.

Come on, we're all thinking it....Joyce probably insisted Suzanne be excluded.

On Twitter the official Three's Company channel mentioned that Suzanne was invited, but as far as they know her absence is due to a "scheduling conflict." If you ask me I bet everyone is relieved, including Suzanne. I would not want to sit on a stage with people I knew did not like me and pretend to be buddies.
Not sure if Lana (Ann Wedgeworth) was invited. She also left the show on less-than-great terms. But she did interviews for the DVDs, so I don't think there is bad blood there.
JackJanetChrissy 03-06-2017, 03:08 PM OOPS, I was mistaken...the official Three's Company account said Suzanne Somers' absence from the DVD special features was due to a scheduling conflict.
When asked about the upcoming reunion, they said, "No word on the reason behind her absence yet." Hmmmm

The reunion would have gotten tons of more press if Suzanne had been involved. Too bad folks couldn't put aside their differences, whoever's fault it was, to come together for one retrospective.
JackJanetChrissy 03-08-2017, 10:53 AM I agree, without Suzanne it does not feel like a complete reunion. But. I will take it.
Dianne3 03-09-2017, 05:29 PM I don't know how much truth there is, but a few years back I read somewhere that Suzanne did not appear on some TC DVD not long after John died, because she wasn't paid or paid enough for it.
Personally, I don't see what the big deal is about SS not being there. By a certain point in the series, I was glad she was off the show. Not necessarily that she was fired, but that she was gone.
Once she was gone, TC then had more Jack centered episodes. Some of John Ritter's best work was after SS left.

WELL, Priscilla Barnes has a new podcast series called Barnestorming. This week she had the surviving Three's Company cast (minus Suzanne, of course) on for a 40th Anniversary reunion show! I mention this because within five minutes I understood why Suzanne was not involved in the cast reunions. Some juicy highlights:
1) In the first five minutes they talk about the season 5 episode "Dying to Meet You." In this episode there's a scene where Jack has to get in a coffin and pretend he's dead, and during the rehearsal of this episode someone put a blonde wig in the coffin---it was a joke about how Chrissy (Suzanne) was "dead" to the show....
2) Joyce says multiple times throughout the podcast that "99% of fans" she has encountered prefer the Terri years to Chrissy years.
3) Priscilla says how protective Joyce DeWitt is of her (Priscilla)---and when fans ask Joyce to autograph photos SHE WON'T SIGN PHOTOS WITH SUZANNE IN THEM. She prefers signing photos from the Terri years.
4) Then Jennilee tells a story how she met Suzanne once and Suzanne was very nice to her in person but whined in the media afterward.
5) Priscilla mentions that Suzanne actually invited her onto her talk show but Priscilla said no.
So I think that answers all our questions as to why Suzanne was missing from these reunions. I mean I know Suzanne is not the best at playing nice, but they are pretty clear in their dislike of her. I understand that relations on the show were not always peachy keen but I think the attitudes on parade in the podcast are really catty and off-putting.
Here is a link to the podcast. It is long and rambling and many times they all talk at once so it's annoying and hard to hear, but there is some interesting stuff, especially about Richard Kline's time in the Army. Thanks for reading!

Yeah, it's really insane how people can still hold a grudge against Suzanne after all these years. After all, she just wanted more money, it's not like she killed anyone. Suzanne may have had an ego, but evidently so did everyone else.
Retro4Life 03-11-2017, 11:09 AM Yeah, it's really insane how people can still hold a grudge against Suzanne after all these years. After all, she just wanted more money, it's not like she killed anyone. Suzanne may have had an ego, but evidently so did everyone else.
It's sad to read about all of this discord; I had thought most of it was put away after Joyce came on Suzanne's show.
And there's no logic behind Jenilee and Priscilla disliking or resenting Suzanne; if she hadn't left the show, they wouldn't have had a job!
The whole "disliking Suzanne" thing seems to be WAY out of proportion to the depth of her "sin". She wanted more money; as you said, so does just about anybody. I never read where she denigrated her co-stars, and I think her hubby was the motivator behind most of it. Plus, for heaven's sake, it was 36 years ago! She's reached out and explained herself. I don't know what more anybody expects of her at this point.
A lot of people really NEED to have a villain in their lives. Apparently this goes for some of the co-stars of the show as well as the fans.

Agree completely! I like Joyce DeWitt and think she's probably a good person in real life, but I'm always annoyed when she does the whole passive-aggressive thing when asked about Suzanne.
You can't pretend to take the high road while p***ing on someone else. Sorry, Joyce.
JackJanetChrissy 03-11-2017, 02:56 PM The other source of negativity came from Priscilla. I already knew she did not enjoy her time on the show, but she really ripped into it on the podcast. She said that Three's Company was not funny, the jokes were terrible, her character (Terri) was stupid, the producers were terrible people... just a whole list of complaints.
Which, again, I don't doubt she had a bad time. But I guess 40 years later it sounds a little like sour grapes.
Mr. Television 03-11-2017, 03:39 PM It's just sad that for a show that gave a lot of joy to so many that the cast and crew had just a miserable experience.

I hope that this isn't taken the wrong way, but is Priscilla Barnes on some sort of medication like Prednisone? I know that she's older and you can't automatically expect her to look exactly like she looked when she last played Terri over 30 years ago. But it's none the less, hard not to think about how lumpy and a sort of swollen her face as seemingly become in recent years.

I think she might have had some injections in her cheeks and lips. The filling material doesn't change, but the skin does, causing what is known as "pillow-face" (puffiness/lumpiness). The human face loses elasticity over time and the fat/collagen injections are supposed to simulate youthfulness (full cheeks) and smooth wrinkles. Some people take it too far, and some people have terrible doctors.
I also think she smokes, which may have accelerated some sagging. Cigarettes reduce collagen in the skin (what makes skin appear firm and smooth). No judgment here; we're all just dumb bodies that get old and fat and saggy and whatever.
king of comedy 03-27-2017, 05:28 PM Man that is sad. She was so beautiful back then and so natural.
Retro4Life 03-27-2017, 09:05 PM I don't think she looks THAT bad. Yeah, in general, plastic surgery is not a good option, though; either in terms of health or appearance.
But just about everybody in Hollywood does it. I guess some just have better doctors.

But Suzanne wasn't just asking for a raise but a percentage of the show. Not to mention she wasn't just asking for parity with John, but for the amount Carroll O'Connor and Alan Alda were getting at the time. She simply put it, got greedy. ABC had just been through difficult negotiations with Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams on Laverne & Shirley and were not about to go through it with Suzanne Somers, and she learned the hard way. No wonder Joyce and John didn't want her back - she thought she was more important to the show than them. She was not a team player.

That is true, Suzanne was not a team player and I believe John and Joyce's anger toward her was perfectly justified 40 years ago. But my comment was in reference to how Joyce drags Suzanne even now. Not saying that Joyce doesn't have good reasons to dislike Suzanne, just seems a little petty 40 years later.

They all just need to get over it. Suzanne was wrong 40 years ago but she didn't kill anybody. They all don't have to be buddy buddy but these constant putdowns are ridiculous. And whether they like it or not Suzanne was a big reason for the show's success at least initially.
Retro4Life 03-29-2017, 11:06 PM Whenever people are upset with each other over decades of time, it isn't just one person who has issues. I know a lot of people want it to be simple, AKA "one totally good person, and one totally bad person" but that's just not how it works. Things (and people) are complicated. Mistakes get made.
I've always loved the quote "never attribute to malice what can just as easily be explained by stupidity." I think a fair reading of what Suzanne (egged on by her husband) did is that it wasn't very bright, but it certainly doesn't make her some sort of ultra evil villainess. And it doesn't make her any less deserving of forgiveness; we ALL deserve that.
On the show, I have to say while I appreciated Joyce's comments, I wish she would have let the others talk a bit more. They never even mentioned Suzanne, or Lana, for that matter. And they really didn't talk about the people behind the scenes much either.

Female Celebrity Smoking List - Barnes (http://www.smokingsides.com/asfs/B/Barnes.html)
Man that is sad. She was so beautiful back then and so natural.
Priscilla when she was on Three's Company kind of had a Michelle Pfeiffer vibe about her.
DEH55 05-26-2020, 01:47 PM I was pleased when Suzanne and Joyce made up on that tv so I am surprised they seemed to be picking on her on the podcast and she is not mentioned at all on that reunion show. Whatever happened back in 1980 they need let it go. I am getting the impression Joyce is a bit two faced.
Very well-said.
(Also: if you want more info about "behind the scenes" stuff, you should listen to Priscilla Barnes' podcast with Joyce, Jenilee, and Richard. It is much more gossipy.)
I finally got a chance to watch the special on YouTube. I get that there's only so much stuff that you talk about in an hour. But I was kind of hoping that they would've gotten into the show's rushed conclusion in 1984. I always wondered what Joyce, Priscilla, and Richard (not Jenilee since she was long gone from Three's Company at that point) felt about how the final few episodes were essentially used as a means to set up the ill-fated Three's a Crowd spin-off with John Ritter.
And I naturally wanted to hear Priscilla go into detail about her issues with the production. Priscilla has gone on record in saying that she had a miserable time working on Three's Company.
