You may not know his name, but you know Ted Cassidy’s work. The 6’9″ in actor was best known for having played Lurch on The Addams Family. He also gave memorable performances on Star Trek, I Dream of Jeannie, Lost in Space and The Six Million Dollar Man in which he took over the role of Bigfoot from Andre the Giant. The February 1987 issue of Starlog included an interview with the “legendary big man”.

I remember reading this when it first came out in Starlog. I thought it was too bad that he had such little regard for his work in the various shows, especially the Addams family. He was great in that. He had such a great presence in whatever roles he performed, such as Ruk, the android.
His frustration with being identified and cast in such a narrow way is understandable, but I suppose with his size and voice it was difficult to be cast as an every-day guy type of character. Always good to see him in repeats of classic shows.

Yeah, it's kind of sad that he seems not to have liked acting but most actors aren't successful and he had more success than most, even though it wasn't very much. It was interesting to read how much he liked the other actors he worked with and that he remained friends with them, especially the actor that played Cousin Itt, who we as fans discount because we never see his face or hear his voice. It was also interesting that he singled out Bill Shatner as someone he liked when Bill is one of the most notoriously disliked actors in Hollywood by his coworkers. But this interview highlights that actors are just people and we shouldn't give them any great status other than as actors.
