View Full Version : In your next house.......
Dude111 02-08-2017, 11:58 PM What would be on the Yes/No lists for your next house or major remodeling job?
I live @ home but If I could manage my own house, etc .. I often have said to myself I would do this
1) Keep the same nice wood windows and siding the house had on it since the 80s.. (Not this ugly plastic crap people are putting on now)
2) Keep GOOD applicances...NOT THIS STAINLESS STEAL CRAP which is ugly and doesnt work as well.....
3) Keep everything different colours (Dark, etc) Not all white which looks bland and gross......
4) Try to keep my house as good looking as I could from BEFORE THE TIME that in my opinion the world died.. (The 80s)
5) Keep good bathroom stuff (Traditonal looks, feel, fixures, etc)

The first floor laundry room was one of the main selling points for our current house. We have a basement, but the laundry room is on the main floor. It's so much more convenient.
Bigger Closets and more closets, and a larger laundry room. It would be nice to have a media/computer room for myself and a separate den/media room for my husband, so I don't have to hear all those sport shows he watches. Our house is brick which I really like, so I'd keep the brick.
gidgetgrape 02-09-2017, 07:31 PM I'd love to have a huge library with built in bookcases, bigger closets with lights that come on when you open the door and my own personal bathroom (no husband, no kids, no guests).
Bonniegirl 02-09-2017, 07:44 PM I wish I had a window seat! :)
Ron Ron 02-09-2017, 07:48 PM A game room....LOL
Babalu 02-09-2017, 11:18 PM Funny, people always ask for bigger closets and more closets but if your closets are bigger your rooms are smaller. No one seems to realize this.

Plus with bigger closets you would just hang onto old clothes you don't wear more right ? Instead of bundling them up and donating them to Goodwill I would think? ;)
We live in a really small old fashioned type place and that is a big reason I periodically give away old unwanted clothing, lack of closet/drawer space! ;)
Theda Bara 02-10-2017, 12:51 AM Large, walk-in closets (I do not mind a smaller bedroom to accommodate a larger closet space)
Mid-Century style living room with high ceilings, thick carpeting in an earth tone (preferably a dark brown)
A lot of windows (I love natural light)
HUGE, and I mean HUGE jacuzzi sized tub in master bathroom
A medium sized backyard filled with flowers & vines: roses, African Daisies, Morning Glories. For trees, shaded Eucalyptus and my favorite Blue Jacaranda (which blooms every late-spring).
Dude111 02-10-2017, 01:24 AM I would LOVE having a nice hottub inside!!!!!

That is pretty much my answer. I also don't like a lot of white. Some stainless steel I don't mind, but not excessive amounts.
I would add one more... a Halloween room!

Torgo 02-10-2017, 10:28 AM We're living in our next house;) The house we live in now, the wife and I made sure that this was the house we wanted to spend the rest of our lives in. No more moving, we moved many many times since we've been married from apartments to duplexes, to houses, but finally no more rentals! We've been saving since we got married to get the house we wanted. We we're fortunate in finding a house that pretty much had everything on our list we wanted- location (same school district so our daughter wouldn't have to change schools though now she's away at college, but we're still close to some of our family that live out here, and away from a lot of neighbors, we have neighbors but there's enough space between them you never have to worry about nosy or noisy neighbors.;) Close to the mountains and woods since we love going hiking and camping)
I got my big garage, and a basement to keep all my movie collection/plus it's my computer room, hate the term but it's my man cave. My wife got her big kitchen, big closet, big laundry room, and home office/sewing room.
Big yard, was the other plus. The main thing now is the wife wants a green house, so that will be one of our future projects.
And yes we hate white walls too, so we have various colors through out the house.

MrCleveland 02-10-2017, 01:20 PM I'd buy property somewhere or use the property my grandpa has and rebuild the house he used to own until his death!
And since the property he has has a high-water level in the foundation...it would look something like this...

Is there a way a high-water foundation can keep the house standing still?

Ahhh! How adorable! Deer guests!! :) We live in the city, so we don't get any deer visits, just squirrels and birds and a couple of feral cats! :)
I would love to have a big yard and have a duck pond! :) :ducky:

A pond would be cool! My parents had one when I was a kid, my sister bought a bag of gold fish for $1, they all ended up living for a long time and got huge.
The cats and raccoons loved them haha
We not only get deer, but lots of rabbits! You have to be careful when driving to the house on the side road because there's usually rabbits running back and forth.

Oh wow! How cool! I bet that is cute, the rabbits hopping around! :)
Yeah, even a fish pond would be nice! Wouldn't need as much space as the duck pond! ;)

IllinoisTVFan 02-10-2017, 03:38 PM Torgo's house looks like a place I'd love, especially if there is lots of land. For me if I had the choice, I'd love a huge library full of books, like you see in movies. I always wanted a full basement that I could turn into a movie theater complete with posters, and a popcorn machine.

A theater room would definitely be cool.:)

Thanks...I used that as an example.
I have plenty of mock blueprints of what the house would look like. My grandpa (we called him "Papa") extended the kitchen of the house he lived in and formed a basement that was once a crawlspace.
There'd be a few differences...like a ground floor basement if the foundation is on high water level, extend the kitchen a little more, and close-in the back so it can be a conservatory and upstairs would be a balcony.
Dude111 05-19-2021, 04:10 AM I would also make sure NO SMART METERS on the house!!!!
If there was one I would call electric company and ask for a standard one to be put in.. I dont care how much it would cost.....
SledgeBarone 05-19-2021, 05:00 PM A game room....LOL
This. Always wanted a room with a pool table, without windows nearby to crack/break in case of an errant shot. Plus room for a ping pong table and full-size foosball or air hockey, but the billiards table is the main thing. :)
Dude111 04-19-2023, 05:36 PM I wish I had a window seat! :)I had one on a flight when we flew to florida one time.... It was interesting looking down below the clouds Bonnie!!
Yong Fang 04-19-2023, 10:18 PM If I could afford a house.
Try to find a house with minimal windows. Windows bring light and light brings heat. I think my dislike of windows comes from my parent’s house which has huge windows in the front and back of the house streaming in the sunlight, in an area of the country with long hot summers. Some people have made residences out of obsolete underground middle silos with no windows at all. I would love that.
A small yard. Be nice if there was no yard at all. I don’t want to cut grass or waste my limited lifetime tending to a yard. I really do not have much use for one. I don’t have children to play in the yard, I don’t and wouldn’t grill outside since I would have a kitchen to cook in and grilling is messy. Looking at real estate websites, even in middle class/working class areas with modest homes are these big ass yards.
I notice a lot of new but modest homes (like a three bedroom house in the suburbs) has these HUGE garages. Seems the garage takes up a fourth of the space of the house. Why? I have no use for a garage, my car can be parked outside. One thing I dislike about America is being so car dependent, would be nice to not even own a car and use public transportation or a private taxi service.
If I was very wealthy, I would have a pool, a sauna and a “hot tub”. Those I would enjoy. I would just employ some service to cut the grass and clean the pool. My house really wouldn’t be huge even if I was a billionaire. Maybe four bedrooms, a living room/TV room, two bathrooms.
I guess you can tell I am a bit partial to apartment living, especially high rise apartment living in a nice place. Think The Bob Newhart Show. No grass to cut of yard to deal with, no exterior to maintain like cleaning gutters, painting and whatever. At the moment I am living in a high rise apartment with my wife and another woman, a three bedroom with a decent kitchen and living room. That’s about all I need.
Caroline13 04-21-2023, 02:32 PM When I was born, parents lived in an apt and I grew up apt living probably for 16 yrs then parents could afford a house and we all moved....then over the years had more apt living and owned a couple houses, 1 with marriage and one condo I bought in the 80's...
All in all, I also agree NO STAIRS......and no Big Yards to take care of...what a waste of space.
Oh and I came into this world in apt living and will go out this way as well.
biffbronson 04-22-2023, 03:47 AM Yong Fang, I know a "Howard Borden" type of annoying guy who could move into your Bob Newhart apartment building. He's ready to borrow things from you at all hours of the day and night.
When my former empty-nester next-door neighbors told me 10 years ago they were moving away, I asked the wife if they were moving into an apartment. She looked at me as though I'd told her to jump in the lake. Her reply: "Oh GOD NO!" They got a townhouse.
I'm a 35-year member of an organization that sponsors apartments housing for low-income elderly, under HUD programs.
A few years ago at our local building, female tenants were complaining that one of the male tenants was harassing them with sexual comments, etc. He was wandering the hallways nights, jiggling their door handles...! They were genuinely fearful.
So the organization went to court to have that stellar gem of a tenant evicted. And guess what. The judge ruled that he could not be forced out. So... if you want to take your chances on having good fellow tenants, right in your building, good luck. Good fences make for good neighbors, but that's not an option for apartments dwellers.
