I really love these characters (they have some of the best lines, especially Larry) but it's just excruciating when they come into the room and the audience erupts into tremendous applause like it's the greatest thing they've ever seen. Is it even genuine? Is it because the audience knows they're supposed to be the popular "breakout" characters and feel they have to applaud every episode? It's even more awkward when Larry is only part-way through his introduction:

"Hi, I'm Larry. This is my brother Darryl..." (trails off) -*-*-PROLONGED-*-APPLAUSE-*--*--*- "...and this is my other brother Darryl."

In some episodes the audience also applauds when they're EXITING the scene. Does this bother anyone else? I just question whether the dramatic entrance is really necessary.

The writers milked it for way more than it was worth. They probably had a applause light for the audience.

If the Darrell's said more than just one word the entire series I might actually liked them.

The characters were a funny part of the show, but a little overused. To me they would have been better as more occasional characters.
I also don't care for the excess applause and cheering when characters enter a scene in a live audience sitcom. Another example of this is "The Fonz" and his entrances on Happy Days. A live audience and a laugh track can both be OK, but are better if they are a more subtle part of the atmosphere.

Larry and the Darryls never should have been series regulars. The whole Fonz-type entrances are embarrassing. They should have been used a few times per year.

Don’t get me started on Michael and Stephanie. Stephanie was funny on her own, but I couldn’t stand Michael and couldn’t stand her with him. That character ruined the show.

Ditto! While I greatly dislike seemingly forced applause on many talk shows, especially when a product is shown( why applaud an inanimate object?!)
I sure get a kick out of these 3 siblings and the audience's appreciative clapping.

Ditto for Kramer's entrance on Seinfeld. Eventually, Larry David told the audience to stop doing it as it was detracting from the timing and flow of the scene.

I preferred Larry and the Darryls to Michael and Stephanie. They were funny, yet quirky characters. To me, Michael and Stephanie were two annoying self-centered crybabies.
