by Nellie Andreeva
January 24, 2017
Netflix has been touting a huge ramp-up of reality series in 2017. One of the first shows announced as part of that is a new version of Bravo’s 2003 makeover series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy".
Netflix said Tuesday that it has ordered eight episodes of the reboot, to begin production in the spring. Back are "Queer Eye" co-creators David Collins and Michael Williams of Scout Productions, who will executive produce with the company’s Rob Eric.
There is no casting information, but the new version will feature a new quintet of stylists.
Per Netflix, “in a time when America stands divided and the future seems uncertain, a team of five brave men will try to bring us closer together with laughter, heart, and just the right amount of moisturizer. The Emmy Award-winning Queer Eye is back and ready to Make America Fabulous Again. With a new Fab 5 and the show’s toughest missions to date, Queer Eye moves from the Big Apple to turn the red states pink … one makeover at a time.”

JamesG 12-08-2017, 03:32 PM "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" Returns: Meet Netflix's New Fab Five
by Andy Swift
Dec. 8, 2017
As previously announced, the streaming service is reviving the reality makeover series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" — in which five gay men help a “clueless” straight man make his life a little more fabulous — and now we can finally get acquainted with the new Fab Five.
Bobby Berk will serve as the show’s design expert, Karamo Brown (of MTV’s Are You the One: Second Chances) will handle all matters of “culture,” Antoni Porowski is the go-to guy for questions about food and wine, Jonathan Van Ness will be on top of personal grooming, and Tan France will lead the charge in the fashion department.
Netflix’s revival will premiere in February 2018.

Netflix’s Queer Eye seems like an awkward fit in these "woke" times (https://www.thedailybeast.com/queer-eye-for-the-woke-guy-netflixs-reboot-struggles-to-be-fabulous)
Looking back at the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the five stars had — with the exception of Carson Kressley — personalities that “were all pretty muted and down-to-earth,” says Kevin Fallon. “I had prepared myself for a cacophony of men in a**less chaps snapping their fingers and shouting ‘fierce’ every three seconds; in reality, they were certainly quippy, but also just normal, competent guys.” In the Netflix Queer Eye, “the men in the reboot are appealingly well-intentioned, but hardly as calibrated,” he says. The problem, he adds, is that the new Fab Five “subscribe to the modern reality-TV idea that LOUDER! IS! BETTER! At some point, this grating big-ness became the default for anyone looking to make an impression on reality TV, but it generally has the effect of seeming artificial and hollow. It’s a shame, because the encounters the hosts have with the men whose lifestyles they’re meant to rehab are, once the hysteria settles, quite genuine. Beautiful, even.”

JamesG 08-01-2018, 02:18 PM The Queer Eye Fab 5 to Release a Book That will be "An Extension of the Show"
by Madison Roberts
July 31, 2018
Queer Eye‘s Fab Five is coming to print! The cast of the hit Netflix show, Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk, Jonathan Van Ness, is set to release their lifestyle book, QUEER EYE: Love Yourself, Love Your Life, on November 13.
The title will be divided into five sections based on each of the cast members’ area of expertise. “This is a book that’s for the fans of the show,” resident culture expert Brown tells PEOPLE exclusively. “If you love Queer Eye, you’re going to love this book.”
Each section will offer pieces of advice, similar to the tips they give the heroes on the show, and will feature exclusive behind-the-scenes photos from the show and their lives pre-Queer Eye.
“We’re giving our fans the alternate content that they asked for in a really cool way where they can sit and have a nice intimate moment with it at home,” says design expert Berk.
The book will also offer “hip tips,” such as pieces to splurge on in your home or your closet and “five-minute make betters” like the ones viewers see at the end of the "Queer Eye" episodes. But ultimately, the cast wants the text to give fans a deeper personal connection with the Fab Five.
“I love that the audience who reads this book will get a greater insight into things that we did on the show but for me, it’s way more about them getting to know us more,” says the show’s fashion expert Tan France.
“I think the reason why this show has been so successful is they’re not just connecting with the heroes, they’re connecting with us five.”
“You get to hear a little bit more about our little relationships, the way that we are in between scenes, and you’ll get to see photos of that as well,” adds Brown.
“I think sometimes throughout us giving help and showing people how to live their lives in a better way, they also just kind of want to know, ‘What are the five of us like?’ and they’ll get that information.”
Although each member of the Fab Five authors their own section, they aren’t afraid to share their opinions across verticals. In Antoni Porowski‘s food section, where he outlines a few recipes, tips he gives on the show and stories about how he grew to love food, the other four group members also share their favorite recipes for food and drink.
“I think it’s important with this book that we do cover the topics that we cover on the show because it’s an extension of the show, but we’ve never shied away from discussing the things that were important to us,” France says. “We’re so much more than just what we represent in our verticals and that’s another facet of the show that our audience seems to appreciate so much.”
Similarly, in Jonathan Van Ness‘ grooming section, the Fab Five offers details about their morning routines or their own personal grooming tips.
“When we would be writing this book, we would just get together and start talking about the things that are important to us,” Brown says. “As we would do that, the advice would just spill out. So it was very organic for it to translate from what we to do on TV to a book.”
When they were initially cast on the show, none of the cast members realized how big of a hit it would be. Ultimately because the mission of acceptance comes so naturally to them, they believe that resonated with their viewers, and they hope the book will give an “extra layer” to "Queer Eye" that fans can enjoy between seasons.
“I didn’t think that lightning could strike twice, so the fact that it has still blows my mind,” France says. “It’s only when I’m out on the street and people get really excited that I’m like, ‘Holy crap this is having a huge impact on so many people across the world.’”
“Every time we do something, whether it be in the press or the show or this book, we push the agenda forward that we are fighting for acceptance,” he adds. “It’s no longer just ‘tolerate us.’ It’s a message that will run through every season. It’s a message that everyone of us follows in our daily lives.”

Netflix has just renewed the reality series for Season 9.
The ninth season will switch locations to Las Vegas after Season 8 will be once again set in New Orleans. Season 8 will premiere on January 24, 2024.
It comes after Bobby Berk posted an emotional goodbye as he plans to exit the show with Season 8.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce that season 8 will be my final season on Queer Eye. It’s not been an easy decision to be at peace with, but a necessary one. Although my journey with Queer Eye is over, my journey with you is not. You will be seeing more of me very soon,” he said.

Bobby Berk explains Queer Eye exit as he confirms feud with Tan France (https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/bobby-berk-leaving-queer-eye)
Berk, who announced his departure from the Netflix reality show last November, tells Vanity Fair that he assumed that the second New Orleans season would be the last as it wrapped up his and the rest of the Fab Five's seven-year deal. On the last day, “the Fab Five and the crew, we all stood there, and we took pictures and cried,” says Berk. “We thought we were done. Mentally and emotionally, I thought we all moved on. I know I did, and I started planning other things.” But last fall, Netflix decided to renew Queer Eye due to a shortage of original content because of the writers' and actors' strikes. So he, Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness and Tan France were all offered new deals. Berk decided not to sign and says the other Fab Five members were considering doing the same. “We’d just assumed that the show wouldn’t come back if we all didn’t come back,” he says. “I was like, I’m not going to be having FOMO ’cause the show is not going to happen. I had become at peace with it.” Then, shortly before the deadline, something happened that changed the other four cast members' minds. “And with only one of us not coming back, Netflix felt (it) could recast one person,” says Berk, adding: “There were definitely emotions. But each one of us had our reasons why we did what we did. I can’t be mad—for a second I was.” Berk also confirmed rumors of feuding with Tan France. “Tan and I had a moment,” says Berk. “There was a situation, and that’s between Tan and I, and it has nothing to do with the show. It was something personal that had been brewing—and nothing romantic, just to clarify that...Should I have unfollowed Tan (on Instagram)? No. Maybe I should have just muted him. But that day, I was angry, and that’s the end of it. We became like siblings—and siblings are always going to fight.”
Queer Eye announces Jeremiah Brent as Bobby Berk's replacement (https://ew.com/queer-eye-announces-bobby-berk-replacement-8598167)
The esteemed interior designer joins Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, and Jonathan Van Ness in the upcoming Las Vegas-set Season 9. Brent replaces Berk, who opted to exit the Netflix reality show after eight seasons. Brent is an alum of The Rachel Zoe Project who got his big break hosting the Oprah Winfrey Network's Home Made Simple. Brent and fellow esteemed interior designer/TV star Nate Berkus have been married for 10 years. They previously co-hosted HGTV's Nate & Jeremiah Save My House and The Nate & Jeremiah Home Project.
Jonathan Van Ness accused of being a "monster" while filming Queer Eye (https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/queer-eye-tensions-bobby-berk-leaving-jvn-temper-1234980316/)
Bobby Berk's recent exit from the Netflix reality show revealed there was tension among the Fab Five. But, Rolling Stone's Cheyenne Roundtree reports, "even making the show was difficult, four production sources say, due, in part, to Van Ness’ behind-the-scenes behavior. Three more sources who worked with the reality star described Van Ness as emotionally 'abusive' and having 'rage issues.'" Berk's exit ended the illusion of happy family," says Roundtree. "As Queer Eye got bigger, the quintet grew increasingly competitive over screen time and who had the best sound bites, production sources say, as each jockeyed to be the show’s biggest star," reports Roundtree. "Still, it was clear hairstylist Van Ness was the breakout personality. That, however, brought another set of issues. Four Queer Eye production sources and three sources who worked with Van Ness said the reality star was terrible to work with, using words like 'monster,' 'nightmare,' and 'demeaning' to describe them. Three people labeled Van Ness as emotionally 'abusive' and having 'rage issues,' and all seven sources said the star would lash out at crew members and people who worked closely with Van Ness." As one production source put it: “(There’s) a real emotion of fear around them when they get angry. It’s almost like a cartoon where it oozes out of them. It’s intense and scary.” During filming, one production source estimated that Van Ness would explode at least once a week. “He was a yeller,” they said. A Queer Eye production source likened the Fab Five to a boy band that was put together. “Essentially they were a group of people put together in their mid-thirties and told to be best friends," said the source. "But people don’t expect that Queer Eye could be that. That’s truly what it was: a manufactured boy band with big personalities that certain ones were favored and certain ones were not, and then eventually (things) turned really toxic.” Van Ness did not reply to Rolling Stone's multiple requests for comment.

“I was depressed,” he tells People of relapsing while filming Season 3. “It felt shameful because I was teaching people that they could be better, but in my own life I was trapped.” Brown says the tensions between him and his Fab Five castmates, which were exacerbated by bullying and unchecked bad behavior by executives and members of production, contributed to his relapse after 12 years of sobriety. “I struggled with not facing my demons and the things I was going through on Queer Eye,” he says. “It was: ‘I’m stressed from work, meet me at a bar for a drink.’ A drink would lead to weed, cocaine, pills. I wasn’t coping right, but I pretended like I was. I was so broken.”
