Friends portrayed several LGBT characters in a positive manner. Ross' ex-wife was portrayed as a perfectly well-adjusted woman and a good mother. Chandler's father was also portrayed as a self-assured, if somewhat racy, woman. If anything, Ross' and Chandler's struggles with relating to them were shown to comedic effect.

I always felt that Carol (Ross' ex wife) purposely got pregnant by Ross so she could share a baby with her lover Susan.... but whatever.

So are you saying that the implication is that Carol already knew that she was a lesbian and that she was about to leave Ross during the time that she got pregnant with Ben? Interesting school of thought.

I don't recall their being any outrage.

It was different at the time.
