View Full Version : Movies on DVD that are difficult to find.
Flying Dutchman 01-11-2017, 01:19 PM Have you ever tried so hard to find a movie on DVD, OOP (out of print) and find it's become impossible to locate a copy? 1984 comedy "Maxie" with Glenn Close and Mandy Patinkin. Try to find a copy of that, and you will most times run into a dead end. I saw a copy several months ago online, and it was priced at $150.00. There are lots of VHS copies on ebay, but I want DVD, just not gonna pay that price. Now I found a copy on Amazon, but still priced too high.
Torgo 01-11-2017, 07:22 PM I guess the only thing you can hope for is a re release, it does happen sometimes.
Some, that I was lucky enough to get when they were first released are now going for insane prices:
Clownhouse (1988) On Amazon, for the MGM Releae the price ranges from around $90 to $437!
The Lady In White (1988) DVD was going for close to $250, but thanks to the Blu Ray release you can get it for much much cheaper now.

Hawkee 01-12-2017, 03:16 AM As a collector and fan of the Misty series of horse books I have always wanted to buy the movie Misty on DVD but for some reason the movie Misty seems to be hard to find by itself and the only time I've seen Misty for sale is in a double pack with other horse movies. Another movie I would love to own that's also hard to find is Wild Hearts Can Be Broken but that movie is rare to find on DVD and the only place I've seen Wild Hearts Can Be Broken is on VHS in the thrift shops

JamesG 01-12-2017, 08:04 AM One of my neighbors is into Michael Caine's Harry Palmer series. He loaned me the first film, The Ipcress File (1965) on VHS, and I then looked into finding DVDs of these films.
The Ipcress File only had one printing on DVD released by Anchor Bay in 1999 and used copies are currently over $50.00 on Amazon.
The 2nd and 3rd films aren't as rare as they were recently re-issued.
The final made-for-tv films Bullet to Beijing (1995) and Midnight in St. Petersburg (1997) you can pretty much only buy used copies of online. The last is the most rare w/ decent used copes going for over $50.00.
Torgo 01-12-2017, 09:56 AM The early 80's animated film Time Masters is going for around $130.

I actually have a copy of Clownhouse that I found in a used DVD store in Vancouver, WA a few years ago. I spent a pretty penny on it—$60—but I'm an admitted horror junkie and movie collector. I'd never seen a copy of it in person before, and I knew if I didn't get it I would regret it. I once read somewhere that only about 100 copies of it are in circulation because it was pulled off the shelves the day after it was released, so if that's true then it is extremely rare.
A lot of Anchor Bay's old releases are hard to track down and really expensive. Some of them have been put out on Blu-ray now by Scream Factory (The Guardian, I Saw What You Did, Nightmares), but there are still quite a few that haven't seen a re-release since 1999-ish.

Torgo 02-17-2017, 07:38 PM Attack Of The Beast Creatures (1985) is another obscure one that had a limited DVD release, it was sold directly from the director's website. Sadly I missed out on getting it.

You can also find the movie Drop Dead Fred for $5,99 at Target in their kids and family movie bargain bin. I know this because my mom and I were gonna buy it because that movie was so funny but we never saw Drop Dead Fred on sale again
