I wasn't allowed to watch a lot of adult shows, and my parents always were protective about that. Anything that came on before 9:00 i was allowed to watch expect on Saturdays, when that rule was not enforced.

Nope. I can even remember watching shows like Benny Hill and Bizarre with my dad.

I just found out after seeing your post about Bizarre that it aired on Showtime in the United States. At the time that show original aired,in my market,Showtime was received by a dish on your house that looked more like a microwave antenna then dish style antenna known today. The company would mount it in the middle of your roof on what looked like a 30 foot push up pole style mast, and if I remember correctly, the antenna was not angled,it pointed in the horizontal direction. This is from memory of a person I knew of that had Showtime. The downfall of having showtime in my market, at that time, was that was the only thing you received,Showtime only, that is why we went with cable, with up to 36 channels, and not all of those channels had programing on them at first, then it went to around forty-two channel. Is the TV show Bizarre being rerun today in the United States,if so on what network ?

Ren & Stimpy is the only one I was forbidden to watch by my mom. She made my sister and I turn off the very first Simpsons Halloween Special because in the Bad Dream House segment, she thought the voice that said "Get Out!" was Satanic, we weren't banned from watching the series though. My bedtime was 9:00 so I wasn't exposed to much racy primetime, I'd watch Nick at Nite from 8-9 most nights except Fridays when I would watch TGIF on ABC.

Only 2 I can think of are "The Simpsons" and "Roseanne".

To this day I still don't like "The Simpsons" but I do like "Roseanne".

yes, we weren't allowed to watch The Simpsons, Roseanne, Married with Children or In Living Color. Ironically, we were allowed to watch Melrose Place, Sisters, Beverly hills 90210 and MTV. So my parents were weird about what we could watch.

I remember one of my friends couldn't watch Three's Company.

My parents didn't want me to watch Three's Company, Night Court or The Golden Girls. It didn't make a whole lot of sense because my dad let me stay in the room while he watched Dallas and LA Law.

When I was under maybe ten, I wasn't supposed to watch the Three Stooges. Of course I did anyway before anyone else was up. But eventually I stopped liking it and gave up.

My bedtime was 9:00, so I wasn't exposed to much racy primetime either. If the show aired before 9:00 on a weekday, it was allowable. on the weekends, all bets were off. The closest to "violent" or "racy" shows I saw was Rescue 911, On Scene: Emergency Response, American Gladiators, Sisters, Star Trek: The Next Generation and WWF Superstars of Wrestling. However, since Rescue 911 came on at 8:00, and On Scene, American Gladiators, Sisters and WWF Superstars were on the weekends, my parents didn't care.

Now *before* I started school in 1990, I was allowed to watch China Beach, St Elsewhere, Knots Landing, and Falcon Crest

Now I *do* remember the WWF sometimes putting that big red "X" when there was something that needed to be censored. A few times, when I watched one of the movie channels on DirecTV, I'd hear a character say a bad word, but I'd had grown up, that it wasn't a big deal.

I could watch anything except on school nights where I had to be in bed by 10pm.

Luckily with the advent of VCR recorders I could program it to record anything late into the night.

I was pretty much allowed to watch anything; my folks and I discussed the shows I watched, so it wasn't like I had no access to information about the topics. All in the Family was very controversial at the time, but we watched it together, every week.

I also remember a big "to do" about the violence in The Three Stooges short films. My dad and I watched them together when he got home from work, LOL.

Today, I'm sure it's a whole 'nuther game for parents. I do not envy a modern day parent when it comes to monitoring their kids' viewing.

Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In.

Good news, it's available on DVD(Not the mention your parents aren't around to dictate to you what you can watch)! . I was ordered to "call it quits" at 10:00PM, most of the shows I couldn't watch are also available (I own many of them) on DVD, negating that roadblock. For the record I have no kids, but if I did there are MANY of today's shows that I'd forbid them to watch (Many of the issues that were on the shows that were on TV when I was a kid are now "family fare" when compared to today's shows. It's a double-edged sword folks!

We only had the one tv until around 1970 so we had to watch whatever my dad wanted to see. After we got the second tv, he didn't care what we watched. This was before cable or satellite tv. The only thing my dad got mad about was when I'd stay up late and watch The Midnight Special or those monster/horror movies that came on around midnight on the weekends.

Same here...also I wasn't allowed to watch Ren and Stimpy. I still won't watch that show today!

I have reasons why I now hate The Simpsons... they've been on for too long and my brother-in-law LOVES the show...long story!...

We couldn't watch Roseanne or Married With Children. We didn't have cable TV, so the choices were very limited, and eventually our mom gave up and let us watch.

I too wasn't allowed to watch MTV.

And if I had cable/satellite right now...MTV would STILL be forbidden...not because of controversy, but because MTV is a shadow of it's former self if anything!

Granted I can only speak from my experience, but my daughter who is 18 now really the only things we didn't want her watching when she was a really young age were shows like Jersey Shore and The Real World, but she never had interest in those so it was never a big deal.

Of course TV is nothing in comparison to what can be found on the Internet, whatever's on TV, there's far far worse things online. But that's a whole different story.

And what's sad is that a parent can only control what their child watches at home (sometimes barely). Who knows what your kids' friends' parents are allowing; no way to control that.

But yeah, the internet is the Wild, Wild West. I enjoy it a lot now, but I am honestly glad it wasn't around when I was a kid; I might not have finished school, lol.

Yep, or what their friends are showing them etc. Hey, I had a friend when I was a kid who wasn't allowed to watch R-rated movies, and he would sneak over to my house to watch them. Whoops.

Oh yeah, same here. My concentration would have been even worse than it already was haha

My parents did the same thing, but most of the time, i watched USA Network's game show rerun lineup anyway.

A lot of the shows i watched as a child were family-friendly. Two of my favorite shows, Life Goes On and American Gladiators, fit this trope. The game shows were too, but not soaps. My late grandmother would take care of me on Sunday Nights, while my parents went to church, and we would watch Life Goes On together. She never cared for Free Spirit though.

I was not allowed to watch Dungeons & Dragons because it was violent, and Tiamat scared me big time. But i was allowed to watch The Real Ghostbusters. So what gives?
