View Full Version : What was the last thing you fixed?
Dude111 01-01-2017, 09:12 AM Last night I fixed a VHS tape of a movie I got.. (I didnt realise the tape was broken (It broke right @ the end of the clear leader tape))
I opened the shell and got completly aggravated as I cant ever get those 2 pieces in the back BACK IN once they come out..... (I dont know how they go in and when I open the shell, they usually fall out) I was almost going to gvie up and throw it away but then I remembered I had a blank cassette I could use the shell from.......
I carefully opened THAT SHELL and looked closely inside on how to remove the spools without those pieces coming out!
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTFYh1V-JmW81E-0grpXhsOky2hN9_emN__hm0gYsLXyEKWAeWWVtlLUfw (Those things behind the spools)
I opened the take up spool and took the old lead tape off and just clamped the play tape to the spool (The dark tape) ...... Finally got it back in,screwed together and I tried it and SHE WORKS WELL!!!!!!!!
This is the first vhs tape I have fixed properly!! (With those pieces still there (I didnt wanna lose this 1st release of this movie..... A very good/scary Paul Newman movie! (1981 - Absence of malice)))
Its rewarding!!!
Dude111 10-20-2017, 01:27 PM I last repaired one of my 8 track tapes :)
I got volume 2 of "1950s rock and roll collection" and the pad was no good so I went out to find a good pad...... I found one and last night I went about fixing it....
When I opened the cartridge the tape came off the spool a little and I thought I lost the tape but I managed to get it wound back on the spool and into the cartridge and she plays fine :)
Now to get volume 3 of this amazing set.... Its a 4 record set,3 8 track set (Im not sure how many cassettes or CDs in the set)
Dude111 11-05-2017, 05:59 AM The other day I got a VHS tape in the mail I ordered (AND JUSTICE FOR ALL - 1979)
I Think the person rewound it with one of those crappy radioshack things WHICH ARE HORRIBLE.. (They slam the tape @ full speed when it gets to the start) - YA DONT EVER USE THAT GARBAGE!!!
The tape was off the take up spool so I opened the cartridge and re-attached the clear lead tape to the spool using a couple pieces of tape..... I had to put it in a different shell as the parts in the back (1 of them) came off and it wouldnt play at all........
I took an empty one and put both spools into it.... Its not working correctly for some reason (the things in back of the spools) but thankfully its working...
This is the first 1981 columbia release of this movie and its the BEST and i didnt wanna lose it,been looking for it for along time!!!
Nanoose 11-24-2017, 07:37 PM A broken piece of glass in my green house plus well I was in there I plugged up some of the crakes with expanding foam insulation. Cheers and happy weekend!
Dude111 03-29-2018, 11:41 AM This morning I fixed a cassette I got......
It wouldnt play well, sounded like it got wet or was somehow being wedged in and couldnt freely move.... IT WAS HARD GETTING THIS!! -- I was tired and my eyes were hurting from overtired and I almost gave up..... The tape kept coming off the lead spool (The one on the left if looking @ side 1)
I put it into a different shell and finally got it closed w/o the tape being scrunched in the front!! (This shell has screws also thankfully (The one I took apart easily came apart with a knife wedged in the front))
I didnt wanna lose it....... Whitesnakes first album - TROUBLE (1978)
Chocolate Moose 03-29-2018, 02:03 PM Yesterday I broke the bathtub, the freezer, and today DD broke the toilet. We are constantly repairing things !!!!
Dude111 04-07-2018, 06:30 AM Last night I fixed one of my 8 track tapes :)
I just got BARRY MANILOWS first concert (1977) and there was basically NO PAD and when track 4 played, the right channel wasnt there. (I LISTEN IN MONO BUT IT STILL MAKES IT SOUND WIERD MISSING A CHANNEL)
I popped the cartridge open and put a good pad in :) (Thankfully it wasnt damaged)
Right now, I’m trying to fix my mom’s email problem. The last time she had email was this morning, and had issues with the email app ever since she got home from work.
She tried rebooting and uninstalling the app, but that didn’t work for her. So I contacted our internet service provider and they are going to give our house a call within 24-72 hours and get the issue worked out.
Dude111 08-19-2018, 07:44 PM This morning I fixed the scale in our kitchen used to measure food and such.... I had mac and cheese tonight and when I pressed the button to turn it on nothing happend... I checked the batteries and they were in ok... I tried NEW batteries and still nothing...... I couldnt understand it as it worked the other night when I made mac and cheese!!
I was mad so I slammed it on the counter 4 or 5 times.... Whadda ya know,it worked perfectly :D
Its interesting how that seems to work often!!
Theda Bara 08-19-2018, 08:47 PM The toilet!!! My five-year-old nephew clogged it by using too much toilet paper.
Dude111 05-19-2021, 03:51 AM I last tried to repair an 8 track I just bought (Bad shell) but it wasnt meant to be.... (I cant fix all of em..... Im not as good as some are)
biffbronson 05-19-2021, 04:35 AM A broken spring on my patio door. I was about to buy a new spring, but instead fixed the old one with a lockwasher.
stevea 05-19-2021, 07:23 AM The toilet!!! My five-year-old nephew clogged it by using too much toilet paper.
Me too! I got a new one put in, and there must have been a gummy label in the tank, which got caught in the flapper. It wasn't obvious at first, so I was trying another fix, not knowing which way to turn a screw.
OH Nuts! 05-19-2021, 07:25 AM Only a broken toilet seat= beyond screwing an item in or hammering a nail, I’m pretty inept in this area.
Caroline13 05-19-2021, 02:02 PM Computer work, a friend sent me a new computer person and what a FIND...he's great and didn't charge an arm and a leg and he does all kinds of work, he is called the French Handyman, he's from France...and he's a keeper and a kinda friend now too.

A computer whiz is worth their weight in gold! Totally agree.
GentlemanJim 05-19-2021, 02:46 PM Man, I was "MacGyver" before there ever was a TV show by that name. I am continually repurposing things to solve problems immediately at hand.
Just the other day I cut the bottom out of a Hormel "heat and serve" meat dish, and cut strips that I could epoxy in place to repair two vertical blind slats (window) where the mounting holes had broken free.
Last month I bought a really nice bright LED headlamp for my bicycle, but was dismayed when I was having to replace the batteries after only 2 weeks. So, I dug thru some boxes in my attic, recovered an old bottle generator that I'd had since my schwinn stingray days as a kid, and repurposed some old shelf brackets into a mounting bracket, and now have a limitless power source for the headlamp.

Sounds pretty inventive. I hate having to replace batteries so often. I have some rechargeable ones but even they don't last very long and they are kind of expensive.
The last thing I repaired was the heel of my walking shoes. It was starting to come loose and I used some gorilla glue to hold it together. I'll buy another pair next month most likely.
biffbronson 05-24-2021, 02:36 PM I did an easy fix on my cordless (rechargeable) electric lawnmower. One of the screws holding the handle in place had stripped out its hole. So I simply drove in a larger diameter screw.
Dude111 01-01-2022, 01:05 AM I last fixed my ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) VHS tape :)
Its the first 1981 release and I didnt wanna lose it...
stevea 01-01-2022, 09:45 PM I replaced the inside-the-garage door opener pushbutton (the switch for the light broke inside but it lasted a good 20 years). Unlike many other seemingly simple projects, this one actually was.
Dude111 01-02-2022, 08:05 PM Last night I fixed my bike.... The chain was off and my tire needed pumping up........
Dude111 08-12-2023, 04:45 PM I last fixed my Barry Manilow cassette :) (If I should love again (1981))
It wasnt playing well in the shell it was in and its the BEST copy of this album I have heard in analogue so I wanted to save it.....
ThisLittlePiggy 08-12-2023, 06:47 PM Got a broken zipper back on track
stevea 08-12-2023, 08:36 PM The latest thing was an outdoor outlet which had been fried by a surge. The electrical part was easy, but the rusty screws, stripped plastic screw hole, and how low this outlet was mounted made it around a two hour job. When that green GFI light comes on, success!
Dude111 08-13-2023, 04:55 PM Excellent buddy :)
ThisLittlePiggy 08-16-2023, 04:24 PM I just fixed the nob on my table fan that was about to fall off.
Dude111 08-16-2023, 05:01 PM A little glue I gather :)
ThisLittlePiggy 08-17-2023, 04:33 PM Just a dab of glue and pushed it back in. :)
Chocolate Moose 08-30-2023, 02:14 PM wow good queston.
biffbronson 08-31-2023, 06:51 AM I have a CD case whose corner had become loose. I injected some Titebond glue and clamped it. Good as new...! :)
Dude111 09-01-2023, 09:11 PM I have a cassette Im gonna try to fix so I guess that is my next project.......
Dude111 03-25-2024, 10:53 PM I just fixed my Rush cassette (Moving Pictures),it wasnt playing well in the shell it was in so I put it it in a different 1 and she plays good!!!!!!!!
I didnt wanna lose this one as it doesnt have DOLBY (Its a CRC release)
ponytail 03-26-2024, 06:24 AM A loose screw. All it would do was turn, so I put a sliver of wood next to the screw and tried screwing the screw and now it's tightly in place.
Caroline13 03-26-2024, 01:18 PM Changed AA batteries in flashlight, that's a repair job.
Dude111 08-29-2024, 09:51 AM Good morning dues how are ya??
I Just fixed one of my cassettes I got recently...Its VAN MORRISAON - VEEDON FLEECE and it wasnt playing well...... I opened the case and it was one of those ones where THEY DIDNT PUT ROLLERS IN!!
What kinda idiot ever thought not putting rollers in would produce good results??
I have seen a cassette as new as 1981 that didnt have rollers in it.. It is confusing why they didnt think that might not be a good idea???
I put the van morrison tape into another shell that DOES have rollers.... (I didnt wanna lose this copy as it was done from an analogue source, has no dolby and sounds goregous)
Dude111 07-23-2025, 05:56 PM I got a cassette the other day and its a pretty good album from Gallery....
The earliest cassette I have seen with Dolby (It says 'DOLBY B' on it) - 1972
It was on one of those early 70s cartridges by Ampex!
Now Ampex used to put out excellent quality 8 tracks,casettes,etc..
They had paper labels on the cassettes and they were goregously made and ran well....... In the early 70s they started printing it right on the cartridge itself.......
This one didnt play well,it was aweful..... I opened it and found out why!!
NO BLASTED ROLLERS IN THE SHELL!!!!!!!!!
What kind of a moron would put a cassette together W/O ROLLERS and expect it to run well??
It has a nice pad in it but it didnt play worth shit!
I like the band and songs and luckily I had another cartridge that DOES HAVE ROLLERS and I put it in that one.......
I will say: This was the EASIEST AMPEX TAPE I HAVE HAD TO OPEN! (Usually Ampex tapes are put together so well you cant take them apart w/o ruining them.. (Expecially Ampex 8 tracks!!!!))
2 songs I knew instantly: I believe in Music and nice to be with you.......
Dude111 08-25-2025, 01:38 AM I last fixed my ERASER (1996) VHS tape :)
It fell off the ledge and the cartridge broke and its been sitting in my fix pile for months.... I finally got another cartridge out and put the spools in that one..........
She thankfully plays fine :)
stevea 08-25-2025, 11:36 AM Church driveway
kartguy 08-25-2025, 05:48 PM I screwed something up....Does that count?
Dude111 08-25-2025, 07:45 PM We know ya didnt mean to :)
Dude111 09-14-2025, 03:56 PM I last fixed one of my VHS tapes 10 mins ago or so...
WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM - 1980
I have an early release (1983) which I didnt wanna lose because they ruined this movie later on..Changing the music in it,etc........ Totally stupid!!
The tape came off at the end of the movie thankfully not at the start!!
I just put a piece of tape to hold the tape to the spool and wound a little bit of it up,then put it back in the cartridge and put it back together.....
Im trying to find an earlier copy of this movie....... It came out in 1980 so I would think THERE IS AN MCA VIDEOCASSSETTE release which would be even better than this MCA home video release...... ('MCA VIDEOCASSETTE' changed to 'MCA HOME VIDEO' in 1983)
This one has dolby on it... An MCA VIDEOCASSETTE release would not.......
ThisLittlePiggy 09-14-2025, 05:39 PM I "fixed" a dirty penny. I love finding coins especially pennies and it was coated with dirt so I washed it and popped it into my piggy bank. :)
ThisLittlePiggy 09-14-2025, 05:40 PM I screwed something up....Does that count?
LOL
stevea 09-14-2025, 06:09 PM I "fixed" a dirty penny. I love finding coins especially pennies and it was coated with dirt so I washed it and popped it into my piggy bank. :)
Into your "LittlePiggy" bank?
Better hoard them--they're gonna stop making them (or already did??).
ThisLittlePiggy 09-14-2025, 06:15 PM LOL yes. My Little Piggy Piggy Bank. Yes I do hoard them. I will never not love pennies.
kartguy 09-17-2025, 09:44 AM I last fixed one of my VHS tapes 10 mins ago or so...
Surprised to see someone still using VHS. Makes me wish I hadn't dumped my machines.
Dude111 09-17-2025, 03:47 PM I love VHS mate :)
Anything analogue............ Just goregous!!
Dude111 09-17-2025, 09:51 PM I fixed 2 of my cassettes today :)
1) Gypsy - First album (Double album) - Paper Labels
2) BB KING - LA Midnight
The Gypsy cassette had a loose pad so I just glued it back on.... Im glad it works as I only have wood glue...
The BB KING tape was on 1 of those crappy early 70s Ampex tapes......No Rollers,The pad was a disgrace....... I ripped that open and just put it in anither shell, she sounds beautiful with a good pad!!!
Isnt BB KING good???
Dude111 09-20-2025, 01:01 AM I just fixed my Jim Croce cassette tonight :)
ALBUM: Life and times (His last album)
The cassette it was in had a horrible pad,it sounded horrible....... It DID have rollers which I was surprised at!! (70s Blue cassette)
I put it in another shell that has a good pad........
Makes me sad/mad when I think of all the beautiful analogue material that made it to cassette in the late 60s/70s but wont ever be heard good because they made crap back then which is very sad!
CARTRIDGES WITH NO ROLLERS/Pads..... I have seen cassettes firom 1981 without rollers!!
Who are these idiots that make thie crap and expect it to play??
Most people wont do as I do and put the spools in another shell or whatever........... I value my media and when I get something analogue,I dont wanna lose it if I can help it!!
GoldenTV 09-20-2025, 10:57 PM Makes me sad/mad when I think of all the beautiful analogue material that made it to cassette in the late 60s/70s but wont ever be heard good because they made crap back then which is very sad!
Don't feel so sad as analogue material have found a better home than cassette. Cassettes were meant to be a disposable medium as their sound quality is lower tier (high noise, low dynamics and low frequency response). Not to mention that every time it is played, the sound quality degrade a bit due to wear and tear on the tape.
If you want to hear high quality analogue music, you should listen to Reel-To-Reel tapes :)
Dude111 09-21-2025, 12:28 AM I hear ya about reel to reel!!!!!!! (8 tracks are almost as good (If they are done right))
Dude111 10-09-2025, 10:40 PM I last fixed my ZZTOP 8 track tape!
Well I moved the tape from the cartridge it was in (Which didnt play well) into another cartridge where the tape DID play fine......
This was my first 8 track job.. I love this ZZTop album (Eliminator)
Now that I know I can do it,I wanna get another cartridge and move my Barry Manilow tape into that! (This ones for you)
Dude111 10-16-2025, 10:16 PM One of my VHS tapes broke several months ago and I just fixed it today!
The movie QUICK CHANGE (1990) recorded off I believe analogue TV!
I dont think its cable, there is too much noise in the video.. But the quality of the movie itself is excellent...... I probably wont ever see it this good anywhere else!!
Sadly its edited for TV but its still better than watching a digitally processed picture!! (In my opinion) which is what they did to this movie on the official Warner Bros. Tape...
Dude111 12-07-2025, 07:19 AM Well I sort of fixed my record player... Now All I need is a needle!!
Last year It locked up on me.. The gears got jammed and it wouldnt do anything so I shelved it again and its been down there for months... Last night I got desperate and I was thinking dropping it onto the floor a few inches off the ground might free the gears and sure enough it did!
I had basically a mono speaker setup last year on my 1968 player by hooking both parts of the speaker to both terminals.. (So it came out both channels in 1 speaker)
I was about to put it in my room last year and she locked up...
Im glad I got it back because my 50s MONO player is about shot and I have no cue how to fix that! (Speed selector control is me$$ed up)
GoldenTV 12-08-2025, 01:26 AM I had basically a mono speaker setup last year on my 1968 player by hooking both parts of the speaker to both terminals.. (So it came out both channels in 1 speaker).
If only things were so simple in Audio electronics. That type of speaker connection is not recommended as you are practically shorting amp's Right and Left speaker outputs together as the way you are describing your setup. You are changing how those speaker outputs were design to function.
Also sound quality will be degraded. Two channels will be conflicting each other (frequency wise) since they are tied together and you get what is called "phase and tonal distortion". So you are getting the opposite of what you are aiming for :)
Dude111 12-09-2025, 12:32 AM Hm are ya sure buddy???
It sounded OK but I guess ill take your word for it...
Its a speaker with a main and a sub woofer and I had them both hooked up to both sides so channel 1 and 2 were both heard in the same speaker... (Like true mono)
GoldenTV 12-09-2025, 03:12 AM You can google search that setup (or use an AI :D) and it will explain why that type of speaker setup is not recommended as Amp's Right and Left channel outputs were meant to be isolated from each other electronically. By hooking up one speaker to amp's R&L outputs simultaneously, the positive side from Right channel is shorted to Positive side from the Left channel. And since both channels are carrying different audio frequency, that short will create distortion (mainly phase distortion) due to conflicting frequency.
If your speaker have dedicated input for the main speaker and the Subwoofer, you can hookup main speaker to either amp's R or L channel, and Subwoofer to other channel. You will not get the best audio, but you this way you won't have distortion :)
Dude111 12-10-2025, 12:50 AM Thank you buddy!!
ThisLittlePiggy 12-13-2025, 06:42 PM a cheese sandwich :)
Dude111 12-13-2025, 11:03 PM I last fixed my Foghat cassette :) (Thier 1981 album)
It had a crappy pad in it which produced horrible sound!!
Dude111 02-04-2026, 12:25 AM I fixed my SUPER HITS OF THE 50s cassette today :)
It said COPYRIGHT 1978 when I bought it so I was hopefull they didnt ruin the songs..
They didnt but the tape didnt play well and I thought it was because of no rollers but it did have rollers... I put it in another cassette she plays fine :)
I fixed another tape I had that didnt play well in its cartridge (Def Leppard - Pyromania) and it had rollers!!
Thankfully that one plays in the alternate case I put it in... (A few months ago)
Dude111 02-09-2026, 09:37 PM I fixed my record player needle earlier!
I heard a noise the other day like something broke and needle wouldnt go in!! (I thought the cartridge broke) but I found the needle earlier on the floor and I tried again and it popped in nice the tight!! (It was loose before)
stevea 02-16-2026, 10:46 PM Worked on a lower kitchen cabinet door. It was not holding closed. I re-magnetized the magnet on the door, and tightened the metal latch the magnet attaches to. Still didn't work.
Took a flashlight and checked, and found there was a slight warp on the door, which was preventing contact. Tried a little brute force to bend it straight, no luck.
Loosened the magnet slightly, and inserted a small piece of cardboard backing from a pad of paper and retightened, which was just enough to get the magnet to contact.
