Carrie Fisher, ‘Star Wars’ Royalty, Dies at 60

By DAVE ITZKOFF DEC. 27, 2016

Carrie Fisher, the actress, author and screenwriter who brought a rare combination of nerve, grit and hopefulness to her most indelible role, as Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” movie franchise phenomenon, died on Tuesday morning. She was 60.

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother, Carrie Fisher, passed away at 8:55 this morning,” a family spokesman, Simon Hall, wrote in a statement.

Ms. Fisher had a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday and had been hospitalized in Los Angeles.

Ms. Fisher, the daughter of the pop singer Eddie Fisher and the actress Debbie Reynolds, went on to use her perch among Hollywood royalty to offer wry commentary in her books on the paradoxes and absurdities of the entertainment industry.

“Star Wars,” released in 1977, turned her overnight into an international movie star. The film, written and directed by George Lucas, traveled around the world, drawing record box-office numbers. It proved to be the first installment of a blockbuster space adventure franchise whose vivid, even preposterous characters — living “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” as the opening sequence announced — became pop culture legends and the progenitors of a merchandising bonanza.

Ms. Fisher established Princess Leia as a damsel who could very much deal with her own distress, whether facing down the villainy of the dreaded Darth Vader or the romantic interests of the roguish smuggler Han Solo.

First time I saw her, "Shampoo" in '75 (her film debut), I thought she is really something. Really going to miss her.

One time when I saw her interviewed she was asked which movie she had the worst time making. She said "Under the Rainbow" but didn't elaborate. To me that was her way of saying she didn't like Chevy Chase. Then I instantly liked her. Unfortunately she was her own worst enemy. And Chevy Chase is still here.

I've also heard Chevy Chase is a real d*ck. Many other actors and actresses haven't had kind things to say about him.

On a more positive note, I adored Carrie; she was real and expended a lot of effort to help those with mental health issues. I'm really going to miss her.

Imagine the stress Debbie would have been under after those long days worrying about her daughter. At her age, not good. Hope she recovers. :(

I think this is true for so many of us "of a certain age".

Obviously I did not know Ms. Fisher, but she sure seemed like a bright, fun and witty person. And boy, was she wonderful in the role of Princess Leia. She was "badass" (a term I loathe) before it became fashionable and she didn't make a big deal about it; she just grabbed the laser rifle and took charge.

RIP Princess

She's since elaborated on her experience with that movie over the years several times. Had to do with her erratic behavior, extreme weight loss, drugs, and having a seizure on set, and being diagnosed with bipolar the first time.

My thoughts are with Carrie's brother Todd, her half sisters Joely and Tricia Leigh and Carrie's daughter Billie Lourd.
The deaths of Carrie and Debbie within just a day of each other is truly a devastating loss. It's going to take a long time to get over this. Carrie should of had much more time on this earth, 60 years is just not long enough. Debbie is gone only because she wanted to be with Carrie, and now she is. :(
Rest in Peace, Debbie. And Carrie, may the force always be with you. You may be gone but Princess Leia will live in our hearts forever. :rip:
