The Nixon administration may have divided a nation in the early seventies, but it did produce some great television. Larry Gelbart adapted the movie M*A*S*H into a TV series that was closer to Catch 22 in approach while Norman Lear changed the one-set sitcom landscape. With the return of a Republican president to the White House, a new generation may get to see how the old liberal guard can get under a nation's skin. Sony Pictures Television is reportedly getting ready to reboot Lear’s classic All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Good Times into miniseries.

This won’t be like the usual reboots, Lear and the suits at Sony want to treat TV like theater, and the scripts as play. New actors would use the original scripts, which will come out as six-episode anthologies.

“There is some talk about doing some of the original shows, redoing them with today’s stars,” Lear told Variety (http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/norman-lear-all-in-the-family-jeffersons-reboots-1201944546/). “There is a possibility that we’ll do All in the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons, Good Times.”

Sony already reimagined Lear’s One Day at a Time as a modern series about a single Latino mom raising two kids. The series premieres on Netflix Jan. 6. Lear will be the executive producer. The show will be written by showrunners Gloria Calderon-Kellett, Mike Royce, with some input from Lear.
