If you’re not watching The Goldbergs 1) you’re very foolish, and 2) you’re probably missing out on the greatest running gag currently on TV (Paul Rudd’s Conan appearances notwithstanding). See, it all started last summer when Adam Goldberg the actor got into an embarrassing pissing match with Adam Goldberg the TV creator on Twitter. It basically boiled down to “You have the same name so people confuse us, and I’m enraged by that!” It took the Real Smother herself Beverly Goldberg to step in and quash the beef by reminding them, “Hey, people can see you.” Although, I secretly hope her private reaction was more like this.

So that’s the end of it, right? Two Hollywood types got into a stupid fight, and then it was over? Nope. The Goldbergs writers decided no one comes at their Adam and gets away with it. And thus they introduced a new character at fictional Adam’s new high school: Adam Goldberg. Meaning our Adam needed to differentiate himself. Or as the character explained in this week’s episode (http://forums.previously.tv/topic/51367-s04e09-globetrotters/?do=getLastComment):
Adam F. Goldberg. Gotta use the middle initial because there’s another Adam Goldberg in school, and he’s very mad about the same name situation.
They’ve worked this joke into nearly every episode this season.

There’s a part of me that knows this is childish, and that everyone involved needs to let it go. A much bigger part of me, though? It thinks:

I love both a good joke and a good grudge. So I’m fully on board for this. Also my general impression of Actor Adam Goldberg is that he’s kind of a dick regardless of what Seth says.
So roast on, writing staff of The Goldbergs. And if you can, work in Beverly talking about Adam F. Goldberg while swearing. That would be gold.

Plus, now that I know the real story behind it, it kind of makes the creator of the show sound petty and immature, especially since it makes sense that the actor Adam Goldberg requested that the creator of the show let people know they are not the same people.
Pretty much everyone knows the rule in entertainment that if someone is already established and someone else comes along with the same (or a similar) name, the second person should change or alter their name to avoid confusion, and Adam F. Goldberg didn't do that, and then started whining like a baby when asked to do so.
Honestly, I thought it was the actor Adam Goldberg who created this show when it first started, and that was one of the reasons I even tuned in to watch, and it wasn't until later when I noticed the "F." initial added that I realized the difference - and I'm sure I'm not the only one who was confused by that.
Plus, the fact that there is at least a 6 year age difference between the two Adams, and they live in different states, so in reality, not only did they not go to high school together, but they especially would not have attended at the same time.

I don't see how anyone could confuse the two - one created and writes a funny sitcom and the other is an actor who consistently plays annoying sardonic characters with no sense of humor, and as it turns out that's what he is like in real life.

Adam F. Goldberg isn't an actor - therefore he didn't have to change his name. Adam Goldberg threw multiple public temper tantrums about the situation until he got a reaction; the running gag is doing exactly what he asked for - reminding everyone that they are two different people, in every single episode.

Seriously? It was easy to confuse the two because when the show came out, Adam F. Goldberg didn't have an "F" initial in his name, and went by the name Adam Goldberg; and his history as a "writer of sitcoms" wasn't known or established at the time.
And, yes, he would still have/need to change his name and/or add an initial (like he eventually did) since he is in the same type entertainment business.

It all came to a head last night in what was one of the series’ very best episodes (http://forums.previously.tv/topic/54503-s04e16-the-kara-te-kid/?do=getLastComment), pitting Adam F. Goldberg against Adam Goldberg — the sitcom characters — in a Karate Kid showdown. The episode began when Adam F. Goldberg wrote a review of Karate Kid for the school newspaper but neglected to add the middle initial to his name, enraging the other “indie, artsy” Adam Goldberg, the one with the “Jim Jarmusch” vibe, who is “very mad about the whole same name situation.”

In a manner echoing their real-life, this particular slight upset Adam Goldberg, the character, because by associating him with Karate Kid, Adam F. Goldberg was “ruining his reputation,” similar to the way the real-life Adam Goldberg believed Adam F. Goldberg was ruining his reputation by associating him with The Goldbergs. “Everyone thinks I wrote this hacky tripe,” Adam Goldberg yelled at Adam F. Goldberg. “I’m tired of the marketplace confusion. You gotta change your name. Now!”

Initially, the show’s Adam F. Goldberg considered changing his name because it “inconvenienced the other Adam Goldberg every so often,” and so that the “pretentious Adam Goldberg” was no longer confused with the “mainstream” Adam Goldberg. However, the two did eventually end up in a Karate Kid style match, but not before Adam F. Goldberg’s mother, Beverly, tried to save her son from getting his ass kicked.

Where have we seen Adam F. Goldberg’s mother, Beverly, get involved in the fight between Adam Goldberg and Adam F. Goldberg before?

This is actually wrong. The first episode he was using Adam F Goldberg. AND he already had a show (that lasted 2 seasons) on FOX starring Christian Slater (Breaking In) that he used Adam F Goldberg on. Fact checking is a wonderful thing.

Again, not a fact. You can't have two people in SAG (Screen Actors Guild) with the same name. Adam Goldberg, the actor is a SAG member. Adam (F) Goldberg is not a SAG member. He's a member of the PGA (Producers Guild of America) and/or the WGA (Writers Guild of America, East or West).
