Today marks 25 years since Sergio Farina abducted his infant son Marcus from his estranged wife's home. Unsolved Mysteries ran the story on March 18, 1992. Here's the synopsis of the case:

Marcus Farina was abducted by his non-custodial father, Sergio Farina, from his Los Angeles, California home on December 6th, 1991. He picked up Marcus up from the home of the baby's mother, his estranged wife Patricia Rose, ostensibly to take the child to the pediatrician. When Sergio did not return with Marcus, Patricia went to Sergio's apartment. She found all the rooms empty and the message, "Ha! Ha! Ha! You’ll never find us. Merry Christmas!" written on a note which was stuck to a mirror.

The state of California issued a warrant for Sergio's arrest for kidnapping charges on December 12th, 1991, six days after he and Marcus disappeared. A Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was issued for Sergio on October 27th, 1993, almost two years after he abducted his son. Sergio and Marcus may be in South America, possibly Uruguay or Brazil, or they may be in Aquila, a city in the province of Abruzzo in west central Italy. Some agencies state that Marcus disappeared from Hollywood, California.

At the time of his disappearance, Marcus Farina stood 2'6 and weighed 22 lbs. He has blue eyes and light brown/blonde hair which may be dyed black or brown and his eyes may have darkened as he got older. He also has a dimple on his right cheek. Marcus has thyroid and pituitary disorders that require medical attention and may have caused him to have a short stature. Marcus Farina would today be 25 years old.

Sergio Farina is 5'10-5'11, weighs 165-185 lbs. and has hazel eyes and brown hair which may be balding. He may use the alias last names Salerno and/or Silva and/or the alias Pedro Bispo. Farina has a college degree in astronomy but has pursued various occupations, including acting and trading in precious gems. Sergio enjoys exotic plants. He speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese. Sergio Farina would today be 58 years old.

If you have any information concerning Sergio and Marcus Farina, please call the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office at (213) 974-7424 or the Los Angeles Police Department at (213) 485-4302.

Curiously, the Charley Project profile of Marcus has an actual non-age progressed photo of him from 2012:

I once E-mailed Meaghan from the Charley Project about this and she speculated that maybe Sergio or Marcus had to flee an address they were living at and left this photo behind. Or maybe it was E-mailed to someone. But it's at least good to know that Marcus did not succumb to his thyroid disorder when he was an infant since his mother was concerned that Sergio might not get him the proper medical attention because they were on the run.

"Ha Ha Ha! You'll never find us. Merry Christmas!'

Ouch. On so many levels.

I read that Marcus' mother came across the photo, assuming it was her son, but that the person in the photo was also named Marcus Farina and probably wouldn't be her son since I am sure he's under a different name now thanks to his father. I wonder if there's any validity to the photo from 2012 and whether the California police ever delved into the matter to ascertain the young man's identity?
