"Game of Thrones" Actor Peter Vaughan Dies at 93

Very sad news: "Game of Thrones" actor Peter Vaughan has died. The veteran British actor played Maester Aemon on the HBO drama for five seasons, and before that had a long and distinguished stage and screen career. He was 93.
Vaughan has credits going back to 1954 and appeared in films such as 1960’s Village of the Damned, 1981’s Time Bandits, 1985’s Brazil, and 1993’s The Remains of the Day along with dozens of British TV series, including playing Harry “Grouty” Grout in the 1970s BBC sitcom "Porridge".
"Thrones" co-executive producer Bryan Cogman, who wrote Vaughan’s final episode, posted on Twitter:
"Rest in Peace to our own Maester Aemon, Peter Vaughan, who passed away this morning at age 93. Truly an honor to have known him."
Vaughan was born in 1923, and according to the Evening Standard began a theater career before serving in Normandy and Belgium in World War II. The actor joined "Thrones" during its first season in 2011 as the kindly blind maester of Castle Black with a mysterious past.
“People talk about Grouty but, good heavens, the fan mail I get from all over the world because of Game of Thrones is enormous,” Vaughan said in a Sunday Post interview last June.
“… It’s been an absolute privilege to have worked on it for the past five years at my time of life because it’s absolutely first-class … As far as anything as complex as that goes, if you’re playing a part in it, the best thing to do is to concentrate on your own aspect of it, which for me was as Custodian of the Wall.
So I really concentrated on all that and kept away from some of the other storylines — if you tried to keep abreast of everything that’s going on, you’d drive yourself mad and not be quite so effective in your own performance. In my case, anyway, that’s the way I’ve always worked.”
