Ron Glass, who played stylish and sassy NYPD detective/aspiring author Ron Harris on ABC’s long-running sitcom Barney Miller, died on Friday, a spokesperson for the veteran actor has confirmed for TVLine. He was 71.
No further details have yet been made available.
In addition to his role on the Emmy-winning workplace comedy, Glass portrayed the spiritual Shepherd Book on Fox’s short-lived sci-fi drama Firefly (as well as its big-screen follow-up, Serenity). His lengthy resume also included fellow one-and-done programs including The New Odd Couple (in the Felix Unger role), Rhythm & Blues, Mr. Rhodes and Teen Angel, as well as guest appearances on All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Streets of San Francisco, Amen and Friends. In recent years, he appeared in episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Major Crimes and CSI.
Glass’ prolific career also included voiceover work, having been featured on Rugrats (and its spinoff All Grown Up!), Superman, Aladdin and The Proud Family.
Glass’ Barney Miller castmate Abe Vigoda died earlier this year, at age 94.

Thank You, Sonny.

I when I read that Ron Glass had died, I yelled "Oh, NO, not Ron Glass?". I am going to have a Ron Glass marathon of all the shows he was a regular/guest on: Barney Miller, Good Times, Sanford and Son and The Bob Newhart Show

"Barney Miller" is one of the most underrated sitcoms of all time. What a great cast and what great writing. Ron Glass never got the acclaim or fame he really deserved. I didn't know him, obviously, but he seemed like a very together and kind person.

RIP "Harris" and thanks for a thousand laughs.

Such sad news...I am completely shocked. Ron Glass was a fantastic actor...may he rest in peace.

This has a terrible year for "Barney Miller" fans (myself included) the world over...first Abe Vigoda kicks the bucket (in January); now Glass buys the farm. I pray and hope that Hal Linden or Max Gail aren't next.
