Behind Wilson, Seattle rallies for 12-10 win over Miami
STATS LLC Associated Press Sep 11, 2016
SEATTLE (AP) Another fourth quarter comeback for Russell Wilson. This time with an added degree of difficulty.
Hobbled by an ankle injury, Wilson pulled off another late rally, throwing a 2-yard touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin with 31 seconds left and giving the Seattle Seahawks a 12-10 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
''We looked after him a little bit. We weren't sure what he could do,'' Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. ''We didn't want to tax him too much.''
Seattle had no choice but to rely on Wilson on a day the expected NFC contenders looked flawed offensively and buckled defensively in the fourth quarter. Seattle yielded an 86-yard touchdown drive to Ryan Tannehill that gave the Dolphins a 10-6 lead with 4:08 remaining.
That's when Wilson went to work, playing on a right ankle that twisted badly in the third quarter as he was sacked by Ndamukong Suh. Seattle converted fourth-and-1 early in the drive on a 7-yard run by Christine Michael, but the big play was Wilson finding Baldwin for 22 yards on a crossing route on fourth-and-4 near midfield.
Four plays later, Wilson hit Baldwin in the corner of the end zone to give Seattle the lead - and finally exhale after a tougher-than-expected opener.
''There's a feeling of familiarity. (Wilson's) been there before. He's come through,'' Seattle cornerback Richards Sherman said. ''... There is confidence. You believe in your guys.''
Wilson's 19th fourth quarter or overtime comeback ruined Adam Gase's debut as coach in Miami. The Dolphins were stymied by Seattle's defense for three quarters before putting together an impressive drive to take the lead.
Miami had just 145 yards total offense until that drive. Tannehill hit Jarvis Landry for 28 yards and Damien Williams for 29 to reach the Seattle 2. Two plays later, Tannehill bulled across the goal line on a designed draw.
MIAMI'S VICE: Tannehill was 16 of 29 for 186 yards, but Miami twice drove inside the Seattle 20 and failed to come away with points.
''I thought our defense did a great job, had us in the position that we were in,'' Gase said. ''I was just more irritated with the fact that we couldn't help them on the other side of the ball.''
ANKLE DAMAGE: Wilson was hobbled after he was sacked by Suh for a 13-yard loss. As he was going down, Suh clipped the back of Wilson's foot and caused the foot and ankle to turn awkwardly. Wilson limped through the possession before getting examined on the sideline and having his foot and ankle taped. He finished 27 of 43 for 258 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
''I was telling some of the coaches and some of the trainers that when I'm 43, 44, 45 years old and I'm still playing, that's probably what I'll look like out there,'' Wilson said.
MISSED IT: Miami missed on three great scoring chances. On fourth-and-1 at the Seattle 17 in the first quarter, Tannehill tried to draw the Seahawks offside before handing off to Arian Foster, who was stuffed at the line of scrimmage. On their next series, Kenny Stills got free behind Seattle's secondary only to drop what would have been a sure touchdown. And in the third quarter, Andrew Franks' 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Cassius Marsh.
ANTHEM ATTENTION : Foster, Stills, Michael Thomas and Jelani Jenkins all took a knee on the Miami sideline just before the national anthem began. The four held their hands over their hearts as the anthem played and stood immediately at its conclusion.
The Dolphins released a statement saying they encourage players and staff to stand during the anthem, but recognize an ''individual's right to reflect during the anthem in different ways.''
''I felt that the platform we have in the NFL can be used to spread awareness to certain things,'' Foster said. ''That's what it was about, to continue a conversation about social injustices and systematic racism that still plagues our country.''
On the opposite sideline, Seahawks players and coaches locked arm in arm. That included defensive back Jeremy Lane, who sat during the national anthem in the preseason finale in Oakland in a sign of support for San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
INJURIES: Dolphins - Mario Williams left in the second half to be evaluated for a concussion. He did not return. DT Earl Mitchell also suffered a calf injury in the first half.
Seahawks - Rookie RB C.J. Prosise suffered a wrist injury in the first half and was seen on the sideline with a cast on his wrist. Carroll said Prosise has a sprained wrist and the cast was protective.

Wilson sharp, throws 3 TDs in Seahawks' 27-17 win over Jets
STATS LLC Associated Press
Oct 02, 2016
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Russell Wilson's efficient arm certainly made up for his banged-up knee.
The Seattle quarterback was sharp despite playing with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee , throwing three touchdown passes in the Seahawks' 27-17 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.
''I thought it was a sterling effort by the quarterback,'' Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. ''Everybody was wondering and questioning what was going to happen and how he would be able to do it. He just did it. This is the best he's looked in the last few weeks.''
Wilson was injured last week against San Francisco and wasn't his usual mobile self in this one, but finished 23 of 32 for 309 yards while wearing a brace on his leg as the Seahawks (3-1) won at MetLife Stadium for the first time since beating the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl in 2014.
''Feeling great,'' said Wilson, who was sacked twice. ''I thought the offensive line did a phenomenal job. They protected really well.''
Jimmy Graham, questionable with back spasms earlier in the week, had six catches for 113 yards, including an impressive 17-yard one-handed grab in the opening quarter, while giving the Jets (1-3) fits all game.
''He's a bad, bad man,'' Wilson said. ''He can do anything. He can make any play, any catch. He's a special player.''
Added Carroll: ''He's just a monster out there.''
Wilson, who has also dealt with a sprained right ankle from the opener against Miami, went 10 of 11 for 191 yards and two TDs and a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating in the first half. He finished with minus-5 yards on five rushes for Seattle, which has a bye next weekend.
Wilson helped Seattle, making the first of three East Coast trips this season, improve to 8-5 in its last 13 games with a 1 p.m. Eastern start time.
Richard Sherman had two interceptions and Earl Thomas one as Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets couldn't get much going against the NFL's No. 1-ranked defense.
Fitzpatrick, coming off a six-interception performance at Kansas City , was 23 of 41 for 261 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall. The Jets were without receiver Eric Decker , who's week to week with a partially torn right rotator cuff.
''We've beaten ourselves two weeks in a row,'' coach Todd Bowles said, ''and we've got to fix that.''
Marshall bristled a bit when asked if he thought the Jets need to evaluate the quarterback position.
''I am. Going down. In a boat. With Ryan Fitzpatrick,'' Marshall said, measuring his words. ''OK?''
Marshall's first touchdown catch of the season on a back-shoulder throw to the front-left corner of the end zone over Sherman cut the deficit to four at 14-10 with 13 seconds left in the opening half. Seattle took advantage of an interception by Sherman at the start of the fourth quarter. Wilson found Graham for 24 yards - a catch challenged by the Jets but upheld by review - and then connected with Paul Richardson for 27 yards to make it first-and-goal from the 6.
On the next play, Wilson rolled to his right and lofted a pass to Christine Michael, who reached over the pylon to make it 24-10.
FLUKEY FIRST TD: Rookie Charone Peake scored his first NFL touchdown when Fitzpatrick was sacked by Cliff Avril and fumbled, but the receiver picked up the ball and zipped 42 yards into the end zone with 2:15 left that made it 27-17.
MEMORABLE GRAB: Tanner McEvoy's first NFL catch was one for the trophy case as he was wide open downfield when Wilson hit him for a 42-yard touchdown that put the Seahawks up 14-3. McEvoy, a New Jersey native, was an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin.
QUICK IMPACT: C.J. Spiller, who signed with the Seahawks earlier in the week , made his first big play for Seattle with an 8-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter. Spiller had worked out for the Jets before he signed with the Seahawks, and made New York pay for not signing him, giving Seattle a 7-3 lead.
''That was the cherry on top,'' Spiller said. ''It's been a crazy week.''
The drive was highlighted by a 27-yard catch by Graham and a 37-yard grab by Doug Baldwin, who held onto the ball despite taking a huge hit from Calvin Pryor, who was flagged for unnecessary roughness, putting the ball at the Jets 5.
IFEDI'S DEBUT: Seattle guard Germain Ifedi, the 31st overall pick in the draft, made his regular-season debut. Ifedi missed the first three games (ankle), but started at right guard after going through a full week of practice.
INJURIES: Baldwin came out briefly early in the second quarter after taking the hit from Pryor. He returned later in the quarter. ... Bowles said Jets CB Darrelle Revis has a hamstring injury, although it was initially announced as a thigh injury. ... RG Brian Winters left in the second quarter with a concussion after he banged helmets with a Seahawks defender - and was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty. He was replaced by Brent Qvale, who had started at RT.

Graham catches 2 TDs, Seahawks hold off Bills 31-25
STATS LLC Associated Press
Nov 07, 2016
SEATTLE (AP) Jimmy Graham's first one-handed catch was special. His second was even better.
And that doesn't even mention his open-field hurdle of a defensive back.
Graham needed just one hand to catch two first-half touchdown passes from Russell Wilson, and the Seattle Seahawks held off a late rally for a 31-25 win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.
''We talked this week if we get a favorable matchup, throw it,'' Graham said. ''It's one of those things in the National Football League these windows are so small that sometimes when a guy is on you, you just have to throw it up.''
Seattle won its 11th straight Monday night game behind a huge game from its tight end. Still less than a year removed from a major knee injury, Graham used his right arm to catch a 17-yard touchdown from Wilson on the first play of the second quarter and later used the same arm to cradle an 18-yard TD pass in the final moments of the first half.
But the Seahawks had to hold on in the final seconds as Buffalo quarterback Tyrod Taylor led the Bills inside the Seattle 10 in the final seconds. Taylor was sacked by Cliff Avril on third-and-goal from the 8 and on fourth-and-goal Taylor's pass into the end zone fell incomplete.
Buffalo would not have needed a touchdown if not for mistakes by the officiating crew at the end of the first half that cost the Bills a chance at a shorter field goal. Dan Carpenter eventually missed a 54-yard attempt on the final play of the half, only after Seattle's Richard Sherman got away with an unnecessary roughness penalty that wasn't called and a delay of game caused in part by the officiating crew standing over the ball.
NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino tweeted during the game that Walt Anderson's crew did not make the correct call.
''Ridiculous. ... From an officiating stand point, I think they can do better than that,'' Bills coach Rex Ryan said.
Anderson said the play was being ''shut down'' because Sherman was unabated to the kicker.
''I just didn't feel like the actions and the contact, because we were shutting the play down, warranted a foul (for roughing),'' Anderson said.
Graham caught all eight of his targets for 103 yards. It was his third 100-yard receiving game of the season. Wilson was 20 of 26 passing for 282 yards.
Wilson and Christine Michael both added 3-yard touchdowns runs, but Seattle's run game was again absent. The Seahawks attempted just 12 running plays and wide receiver Tyler Lockett was Seattle's leading rusher taking a fly sweep 13 yards.
Buffalo lost its third straight to drop below .500, but it wasn't due to its quarterback.
Taylor was outstanding, nearly matching Wilson's performance, except for one miscommunication with a wide receiver that led to Sherman's end zone interception in the third quarter. Taylor threw for 289 yards. He kept plays alive with his legs and made smart reads and smart throws.
Robert Woods was his favorite target with 10 catches for a career-high 162 yards.
''He played lights out,'' Bills running back LeSean McCoy said of Taylor. ''Just everything, the small things, play actions, getting the ball out of his hand, extending plays. He was lights out.''
KICKING THE CALL
The final seconds of the first half were a mess.
Carpenter lined up for a 53-yard field goal with 3 seconds left. Sherman jumped offside and crashed hard into Carpenter, blocking the kick. Sherman was flagged for offside and Carpenter appeared to be hurt bringing trainers on the field.
Because the trainers took the field, Carpenter had to leave for one play.
Buffalo spiked the ball with 1 second left to set up a 48-yard attempt, but the Bills were penalized for delay of game even with the umpire standing over the ball. Carpenter's 54-yard attempt on the final play was wide right.
Seattle coach Pete Carroll said he talked with Blandino immediately after the game to get an explanation.
PERFECT START
Buffalo got a dream start, with Jerry Hughes blocking a punt after Seattle went three-and-out to open the game and Taylor running untouched for a 3-yard TD on the next play for a quick 7-0 lead. It was Buffalo's first blocked punt since 2014.
TOP DEFENSE?
Buffalo scored on its first three possessions before Seattle finally forced a punt midway through the second quarter. That snapped a string of nine straight possessions with opponents scoring on Seattle's defense.
INJURIES
Buffalo center Eric Wood was carted off the field after Gillislee's TD run with a right ankle injury. Wood was rolled up blocking on the play. Ryan announced after the game it was a broken leg. Ryan Groy took over at center.

Goal line defense works out for Seahawks this time
STATS LLC Associated Press
Nov 13, 2016
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) This time, Seattle won it at the goal line.
It certainly won't make up for the Super Bowl loss two seasons back, but the Seahawks' goal-line stand lifted them to a 31-24 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday night.
Tom Brady couldn't connect with Rob Gronkowski on a fade pattern on fourth down as New England (7-2) failed four times from inside the 2 in the dying moments.
''He was playing off me ... pretty far, farther than usual,'' Gronkowski said about safety Kam Chancellor. ''You don't usually see that. A fade, I had to go up to him and initiate a move. I just wanted get on top of his toes, that is what you are taught. I just got up on his toes too much.''
It was reminiscent of how the Seahawks (6-2-1) lost the 2015 Super Bowl when Malcolm Butler intercepted at the goal line to win the NFL title for the Patriots.
''When it got down to it, when you get a chance to win a game on the 1-yard line , there ain't nothing like it in football,'' said coach Pete Carroll, whose Seahawks worked on defending that exact play at the end of Friday's practice. ''It's one of the great challenges that a team and a defense gets.
And our guys just came through, and hung in there, and just fought for every inch and let us walk away with the win.''
Doug Baldwin caught three touchdown passes from Russell Wilson, including a 15-yarder for the final margin. Strangely, Seattle went for 2 points and failed on the conversion, leaving the Patriots a chance to tie with a touchdown and an extra point kick.
`'We wanted to make it a two-possession game,'' Carroll said.
But LeGarrette Blount, who earlier rushed for three touchdowns and has 12 this season, couldn't get into the end zone from close range, nor could Brady on a pair of sneaks.
''Our execution wasn't great,'' Brady said, ''and they put a lot of pressure on you defensively. They have a lot of good players and they make you earn every yard. They play to the end, they have been in a lot of close games.
''It came down to a yard at the end and we didn't get it.''
Wilson finished 25 for 37 for 348 yards and the three scores to Baldwin.
Brady was 23 of 32 for 316 yards but no TDs after throwing for 12 in his first four games since returning from suspension.
New England's Martellus Bennett had seven receptions for 102 yards to lead all receivers.
A GAME OF SWINGS
It was a fierce, sometimes viciously physical game. Gronkowski took one particularly hard hit from Seahawks standout safety Earl Thomas and temporarily had to leave the game in the first half.
It also was a game of big plays and big swings, perhaps none more so than Julian Edelman's spectacular over-the-shoulder 33-yard catch on a third-and 25 to end the third quarter. That set up Stephen Gostkowski's 30-yard field goal for a 24-22 lead.
Or maybe it was rookie C.J. Prosise's 38-yard catch between two defenders to the New England 2, leading to Hauschka's fourth field goal after a strong goal-line stand by the Patriots.
Or any of Baldwin's three TD receptions.
Or, in the end, the power of Seattle's interior defense on the short runs by Blount or Brady, and Kam Chancellor's tight coverage on Gronkowski on the final play.
BLOUNT INSTRUMENT
Blount scored twice on 1-yard rushes, bulling his way into the end zone on the second score. He also scooted left for a 13-yard TD in the third period for a 21-19 lead.
PICK-FREE NO MORE
Brady's interception in the second quarter derailed the Patriots' chance to tie the 1960 Cleveland Browns for an NFL-record nine games without an interception. DeShawn Shead made the pick.
New England had thrown 258 passes before being intercepted.
DON'T DEFER
Someday perhaps teams will learn not to defer when winning the opening coin toss against New England. The Patriots drove relentlessly for 75 yards and their opening touchdown after the Seahawks did precisely that.
New England has scored touchdowns on five of its opening nine drives this season, three of those with Brady at quarterback.
Oh yeah, Seattle went three-and-out with the second-half kickoff.

Behind Wilson, Seattle rallies for 12-10 win over Miami

''I was telling some of the coaches and some of the trainers that when I'm 43, 44, 45 years old and I'm still playing, that's probably what I'll look like out there,'' Wilson said.
MISSED IT: Miami missed on three great scoring chances.

Wilson sharp, throws 3 TDs in Seahawks' 27-17 win over Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Russell Wilson's efficient arm certainly made up for his banged-up knee.
The Seattle quarterback was sharp despite playing with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee , throwing three touchdown passes in the Seahawks' 27-17 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.

Graham catches 2 TDs, Seahawks hold off Bills 31-25

SEATTLE (AP) Jimmy Graham's first one-handed catch was special. His second was even better.
And that doesn't even mention his open-field hurdle of a defensive back.

''We talked this week if we get a favorable matchup, throw it,'' Graham said. ''It's one of those things in the National Football League these windows are so small that sometimes when a guy is on you, you just have to throw it up.''
