I think I have a logical reason as to how the "G" in Maynard G. Krebs could stand for Walter. In Spanish, Walter is Gualterio. Now suppose they used the Spanish version on his birth certificate and when Maynard was told his middle name was Gualterio, he found it easier to pronounce Walter.

Just some fun speculation.
