View Full Version : Whammy! - Major Disappointment

I watched Press Your Luck when it was on CBS daytime originally. Loved it! I was even in the studio audience once!
I was very excited to see it again on GSN. Also excited to see a new version coming to TV.

BUT! The new show is a HUGE disappointment to me.

First, the whammies suck, they are no longer cute. Where is the cute voice they had? Entertainment Weekly had this one right, the whammies were "witlessly updated". The whole double whammy thing was a nice idea but it gets old real quick.

The studio seems too dark, the original was colorful and bright.

Todd Newton, he's ok on Hollywood Showdown and on all the E! shows but did he really need to have ANOTHER show??? Why no Peter Tomarken??? He did a promo for the show and I haven't seen him on anything else. Todd Newton is too loud, he seems to talk very loudly, maybe it's just me, I don't know.

The contestants - All very young, nobody over 30!!! Not fair. Not nice. The original had all ages and this was part of the fun. And yeah, the contestants seem WAY too excited, like they are acting, it doesn't even seem genuine.

Too many whammies!!! How is anyone ever supposed to win anything on this show??? Ugh!!!

The board stinks too, it's smaller and darker. Not big and colorful. The board should be the center of the attention.

What is the point of looking at the audience behind the contestants?

BIGGEST Disappointment -
The prizes, WOW, it's been almost 20 years but it seems they give away WORSE prizes!!! The cash prizes seem slightly LOWER!!! To me that is unbelievable, they should be at least DOUBLE what they were, at least the smaller prizes and keep the $5000 as the big prize. The other prizes are cheap too, a sewing machine? A boom box???

It seems like this is the ultra low budget version of Press Your Luck.

In short, I am massively disappointed. So much so, that I will only watch it if there is absolutely nothing else on. If it gets cancelled, because it sucks, I really don't care. I still love to watch the original though! Here's hoping the original beats the new one by a mile in the ratings!!!

I agree. I don't happen to enjoy the new "Press Your Luck" very much either. The old show was way better, IMHO. I don't like the look of the new board either and the items that they dump on the contestants heads are just plain cheezy!!!

I, for one, like the new Whammy! A lot! I personally find it hilarious when a contestant gets a double whammy. Kind of like the old slapstick comedy of long ago that you don't see too much today. That is how I feel about Whammy! :D :D

I really like Whammy! too. And I think that there are some really great new Whammys (like the boy band one and the 'spell loser' one). As for the budget, I guess I wasn't expecting too much since it is a cable show on a relatively new cable network. I think that Todd Newton is doing a great job and in many ways reminds me of Peter Tomarken. I liked PYL too growing up, but I think that the thing that makes me like Whammy more is the one less question round.

I don't like Whammy either, the contestants sound so phony when they first go up there and introduce themselves. I like the original Press Your Luck better.

I like both of them. The new one is very fun to play on gameshownetwork.com

I don't find it a disapointment.

I do agree that it is a major disappointment. The theme song isn't good, the board doesn't look as cool, the host isn't as good, the set isn't as large, the audience isn't as reactive, the double-whammies are embrassing and low, the set doesn't rotate, and the ending poems are gone as well. I'll stick with the original.

I couldn't stand Press Your Luck back then, didn't see any point in reviving it now. Reviews have been rotten, yet they keep on going. It also seems to be the only thing on whenever I flip by GSN. Why rename it Whammy anyway? I could see if it's a legal thing, but why go with Whammy...the all-new Press Your Luck? I imagine you'd only rename it Whammy if for some reason you couldn't use PYL, but then they incorporate it into the name anyway. AH well, hopefully it just goes away soon.

This show is definitely an improvement over the original. First, the whammies are in 3D and they look great. Then, there is Todd Newton. Peter Tomarken was never a great host. He wasn't easy to get used to, the contestants didn't seem comfortable, he wasn't funny. I mean, at least the contestants on W! seem to get along with Todd Newton.

And, while the reviews may not be bad, it is doing well for Game Show Network, and they are pretty happy with it. And, the rename came because very few people remember the name of the show, most people remember the Whammy, so it was natural to rename the show. (There are NO copyright issues, the original and the revival are both completely owned by Fremantle Media.)

That's the truth. Before it came on GSN (or even before I got GSN) it took my dad and I months to remember the name. All I could remember was "Big Bucks, No Whammies."

Aw, I remember being a little boy watching "Press Your Luck" and loving it! Oh, the memories flooding my mind at this very moment! :)

The original shows whammys did not have cute voices they were scratchy and all the whammys sucked. The board is much better with better prizes like the car. More whammys is better becasue it sucks when you watch the original and the people get like 6 spins passed to them and they dont even get close to landing on a Whammy and end up winning a lot of money and prizes.

That GEM car is dumb. At least on the original they gave away real cars.

Whammy The All-New Press Your Luck was the first ever morning show I ever saw on GSN and when it used to come on at noon it was so fun. I never understood why GSN cancelled it after two seasons because I thought Whammy was an awesome revival of Press Your Luck and my favorite part of the show was the Double Whammies because they really were funny. But what I think caused Whammy to be cancelled when Season 2 debuted they added more stuff like the Big Bank question to the board to make Whammy more awesome. But at least after Whammy got cancelled by GSN we got to see Todd Newton do more shows like Hasbro's Family Game Night which aired on Hub Network "Now Discovery Family Channel" and he has become a big star in game shows today

I prefer the original with Peter Tomarken over "Whammy" & Todd Newton.

The original is much better. I'm not a fan of Todd Newton and most (With the exception of Woolery's "Lingo") GSN originals are horrible and cheap.

Grand Slam, The American Bible Challenge, 20Q, and The Chase are some of my favorites. My problem is none of them lasted long enough.

I agree with you Bestie. I have not seen the latest Whammy. So I cannot say how good it is, but I liked the old one!

Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck was a decent modernization of the original show, but it didn't last very long. Was it any good?
