The CW is Rebooting "Dynasty" with "Gossip Girl" Producers
by Kaitlin Thomas
Sept. 30, 2016

The day we all knew would eventually come has finally arrived: The CW is developing a reboot of the soapy 1980s drama "Dynasty", TVGuide.com has learned.

The reboot, which has the potential to be either the greatest or the worst thing that has ever happened to humanity if it goes to series, is being developed by "The O.C.'s" Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The duo previously produced The CW soap "Gossip Girl", so it's safe to say they have experience with the melodrama of the 1 percent.

Schwartz and Savage are partnering with original "Dynasty" creators Richard and Esther Shapiro, as well as "Revenge's" Sallie Patrick for the project.

According to The CW, the potential series would modernize the dramatic feud between two of America's wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, and be told from the perspective of Fallon Carrington -- the daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington (originally played by John Forsythe) -- and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal (originally portrayed by Linda Evans).

In the reboot, Cristal is said to be Hispanic.

That was my reaction to the news, too. Since Krystal will now be Cristal and Hispanic, obviously Linda Evans isn't being asked to return. And if Alexis isn't brought back with Joan Collins in the role, I won't even bother...

"Dynasty" Reboot Gets CW Pilot Order
by Nellie Andreeva
January 27, 2017

The CW kicked off its 2017 pilot season pickups with nods to its most prolific producer Greg Berlanti, whose company is behind five CW series this season, and to its biggest IP title this year, "Dynasty", a reboot of the iconic 1980s soap from "Gossip Girl" creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

The CW is looking to return to the primetime soap arena in a big way with "Dynasty". In their return to The CW, Schwartz and Savage teamed with "Revenge" writer-producer Sallie Patrick and the original series’ creators, husband-and-wife duo Esther Shapiro & Richard Shapiro, for a new modern-day reboot of the classic Aaron Spelling-produced ABC series.

Co-written by Schwartz & Savage and Patrick, the new "Dynasty" follows two of America’s wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children.

The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington, daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington, and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal, a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class.

This is a new spin on the premise of the original series, which focused on oil tycoon Blake Carrington (John Forsythe), whose daughter Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin) resents Blake’s much younger former secretary Krystle Jennings (Linda Evans), to whom he is about to get married. Cristal will be a version of the Krystle character in The CW version, giving it a more diverse feel.

The one upside to this is that it will make the original seem like Masterpiece Theatre by comparison.

The CW's "Dynasty" Reboot Casts "The Vampire Diaries" Star as Lead
by Malcolm Venable
Jan 30, 2017

The CW's "Dynasty" reboot didn't look too far to find an actress who could bare her fangs and scratch someone's eyes out with her claws: Nathalie Kelley, who plays Sybil in the the eighth and final season of "The Vampire Diaries", is the first actor cast in the reboot's pilot.

Kelley, who also starred in "UnREAL", will play Cristal, a Hispanic woman marrying into an uber-WASPy Carrington family, The Hollywood Reporter notes. While her character is notable for The CW's conscious effort to add a Latina character into the cast, she's also a slight deviation from the original.

In the iconic '80s version, Linda Evans played Krystal Jennings, a secretary who married into the wealthy Carrington family and got into unforgettable scrapes with Alexis Colby (Joan Collins).

In this version, the story will be told mainly through the POV of Cristal and her soon-to-be stepdaughter Fallon Carrington, who's the daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington. As previously reported, The CW's iteration comes from "Gossip Girl" creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage -- experts in serving up delicious drama.

The CW Orders "Dynasty" Reboot
by Tim Surette
May 10, 2017

The CW has announced that it has ordered the "Dynasty" reboot to series.

"Dynasty" was long considered a frontrunner for pickup based on its pedigree; the original series was a soapy success in the 1980s, and "Gossip Girl" masterminds Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz were spearheading the reboot.

The project, which was first announced last September, is a modern-day retelling of the classic series that starred John Forsythe, Joan Collins and Linda Evans as members of rival powerful families.

Savage and Schwartz's version will be told from the perspectives of Fallon Carrington (played by Pamela Sue Martin and Emma Samms in the original series) -- daughter of Blake Carrington (Forsythe in the original series) -- her stepmother Cristal Carrington (a new take on Krystle Carrington, played by Evans in the original). In the CW version, Cristal will be Hispanic.

Those who grew up on the original series might watch out of curiosity but the Millennial generation of today who don't know of the old show will think this new reboot is a rip-off of FOX's Empire.

I'm going to check Dynasty out but I think it might a little too risque and raunchy then the original. I will say that I would love to date the woman who plays Fallon.

If, like me, you were a fan of the 1980’s pop culture iconic television show, Dynasty, no doubt you were looking forward to the premiere of the reboot on CW Wednesday night. The episode titled “I Hardly Recognized You” (http://forums.previously.tv/topic/62440-s01e01-pilot/?do=getLastComment) that aired on October 11th was properly named, if you ask me. Some parts of the show are now hardly recognizable.

“The nighttime soap was made for the ('80s) era, and it should stay there,” says Lorraine Ali. The reboot, she says, “reenters a TV landscape in which the outlandish behavior of moneyed kin is the norm: the Lannisters, the Kardashians, the Real Housewives and of course, the Trumps, a real-time show that runs 24/7 on every other network. Cersei had to bring a dead man to life to compete in this crowded field. Donald Trump had to win an election. Hobbled by history and a dated story line, the new Dynasty doesn’t stand a chance among such extremes.”

I haven't seen the new Dynasty yet. Is it that bad?
Dynasty, 90210, Melrose Place. Something always seem off when they do these reboots. It's like they have to make it as raunchy as possible. They shouldn't rely on that. Rely on having a good story.

"Dynasty" Scores Full Season Order at The CW
by Lesley Goldberg
11/8/17

The CW is committing to "Dynasty". The younger-skewing broadcast network has handed out a back-nine episode order for the reboot. The pickup is the first full-season order handed out by The CW this season.

"Dynasty", produced by CBS Television Studios, is averaging 0.4 among adults 18-49 and 1.3 million total viewers with three days of DVR. That's smaller than the returns for "Valor". However, "Dynasty" boasts a lucrative Netflix deal and makes the full-season order almost a slam dunk.
