In September, TV viewers always get excited about the fall TV season which offers new series to watch and new episodes of returning favourites. It can also appear that way in the sports world when the so-called dog days of summer come to an end and fall brings with it renewed interest and excitement in sports because there is so much going on and so much to watch. In September 2016 alone, you have the following:
---The baseball pennant races heat up with each team using expanded rosters to get their team into the post-season. The 2nd wild card team, introduced last year, adds another layer of intrigue to the games and keeps more teams in the race and gives fans more reasons to keep watching. It would be better still if the Blue Jays can get out of their slump and get back to playing the way they did last year. That would give me a reason to look forward to October again.
---The NFL season begins Sept. 8 with CBS getting a jump on the fall season with their first Thursday game one week later. (But did they have to show the crappy Bills? How sickening! Those "Kevin Can Wait" promos are bad enough, but still...)
---College football also gets going in a big way starting in late August with the big games being shown every Saturday.
---If you want more football, the CFL season enters the stretch drive with the Labour Day classics and the Grey Cup to follow in November.
---And of course there's always hockey. The NHL pre-season and regular season get pushed back two weeks because of the World Cup of Hockey going on in Toronto starting today with all games on Sportsnet in Canada and---get this---ESPN in the US for the first time in ages. If you're a new fan or you just want to be entertained, watch Team North America with Connor McDavid and all the young guys. They are simply fun. In the end, I would expect to see Canada vs either the US or Russia in the final. That's old-time hockey!
During the weekends, all of these sports can be going on at the same time and you can get wiped out from channel surfing. So if your favourite team isn't playing that night and you want to see what else is out there, it's best to plan ahead and follow your own schedule because there really is a lot to watch and it's something that doesn't seem as prevalent in other months. For example, if you don't count the Olympics, August was a total bore.
If all this is not enough for you and you want to see more, I found some classic football clips on YouTube that I think you will enjoy.
