View Full Version : UM fan gathering or convention

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone here had ever thought about getting together with other UM fans (from this board, Reddit, wherever else, etc.) for a day or a weekend just to meet and talk about the show, cases, and so forth. I know it would not be easy with people's work schedules and everyone's proximity from one another, but maybe if it was able to be done like say, once every year, people might be able to plan ahead and all travel on the same day or weekend to a location. I know there are fans outside of the USA that post here, but if I had to guess, the majority that post on here probably live within the 48 landlocked states.

We could all meet at a public location (so that you know it's not a hoax or an elaborate plan with the intent of criminal mischief) and then hang out or maybe even stay the night in the same city/town. Do y'all believe that would ever be possible someday? I just think that would be kind of cool if it could actually work.

Haha I like your disclaimer I thought about Tom Johnson lol.

But seriously that would be cool. Probably won't happen for me I will not live in the US until late 2019 at the earliest. Hoping to move back to Ohio but who knows.

Absolutely. I'm all in.

It is something we have discussed in the past. It would be tough to figure out when and especially where since the members are broadly scattered throughout the US (and some from other countries). I think it's a great idea in theory so who knows, some day it might work out. :)

Depending on when and where, I'd make the trek.

There's probably no perfect time and place for everyone to meet. Another idea for where to meet: somewhere in the "heartland" of America, simply because it is the most logical area with people having to travel from all areas of the country. I don't really know all the steps it takes into taking this from being an idea to making this a reality, so I will need some guidance, help with suggestions, and we will have to have mutual cooperation from all interested parties to be able to make this happen.

I dunno. As a lurker friend points out, it could be fun to meet in a place that has UM significance.

Might I suggest the Blind River Rest Stop? Or perhaps, falling in line with recent thread activity, the Bad Route Rest Stop?

How about the block where Oliver Munson disappeared? It's literally 15 minutes away from my house.

I suggest the gas station where Blair Adams couldn't find the key to his rented Toyota. ;)

Maybe at the cemetery near Chicago where Resurrection Mary hangs out. ;)

I live a short distance away from West Carleton, close to where the Guardian UFO made its appearance. Maybe we can spend the night camping out in a field with our video cameras in case Guardian comes back.

We could all go to Beverly Hills (not far from me) and search for Tony as a group activity.

I love it. I just joked that we should meet in Omaha and wear shirts that say something like "Judy Hyams Search Party."

I like where this thread is going. I will be home for about a month in October. I have to drive my dog to Ohio maybe we will stop in the signal mountain area.

Hey - maybe a gathering of some kind could bring some attention to some of these cold cases. Especially if there is some type of agenda, where specific cases were to be discussed. Or if it is a round table discussion, each participant could discuss two or three cases from their own research.

Totally second that. It's about in the middle of the U.S., is close enough to a major city (Columbus) to have plenty of places to stay and hold conventions, AND it's a location significant to UM fans. Great choice.

Any chance we can drop by Girard, Ohio to see if Paul Pollis lives in a clean house?

So many cases in SoCal and Los Angeles.

I'd LOVE to coordinate an Unsolved Mysteries convention where mystery writers and novelists, etc. can get tables and we can have panels about specific cases and trade information as well as discuss new unsolved mysteries.

That would be so awesome.

I will be in Ohio in October sometime. Although I've been to Columbus too many times to count... I've never been to circleville. made sure to drive around it at all costs. In reality I've heard nothing but good things about circleville from Ohioans.

Haha judging his last photo I saw he doesn't look like the cleaning type. We should make bets.

Yes. I think there should be an inspection. For sure. :)

How about this for the start of the invitation (it's a bit of a mash-up):

"You listen up, second part invitation... Understand, no?

If you don't attend, you el sickos will pay."

I just bought a sexy brand new Mustang, and I'm totally looking for an excuse to make a road trip in it....especially to the USA (I'm in Canada). I 100% agree with the Circleville idea....best choice EVER! I'm not going to Spokane, though, ever, so no one better even suggest that!
I'm gonna get a shirt printed that says "Mary Gillespie's Lover" (kinda like homage to Lady Chatterley's Lover, UM style!)

Forgot to say something....
I've planned events before (nothing big like we're talking, and not with so many people spread out) and my experience was the best way to do it was to pick a date, throw it out there, and everyone figures it out. I would arrange mortgage broker training, so we'd get a feel for what really works best for the majority of the people (as far as the month and the city), and then a date and location would be picked and stuck to. With enough notice, everyone can do their absolute best to make arrangements. Just my opinion.

It looks like the majority vote for a location is Circleville, Ohio. So y'all want to meet somewhere in Circleville this or next month?

I personally just have two big things to take into consideration: I have to ask off months in advance for my civilian job (I'm an OR nurse in a busy service line in which I do have to take call), and I have a military career in the Army Reserve to balance in addition. It'd be difficult for me to take off without a plentiful amount of advance notice. I imagine several others might be in the same boat.

But I agree that Ohio should be a location. It's such a UM hotbed.

Other possibilities for locale - Las Vegas, Tennessee, Florida, or maybe Washington (state)?

At least it would be a good excuse to get a passport. Not sure that Circleville and/or wearing a "Mary Gillespie's Lover" shirt is a good idea. Smaller cities/towns usually don't like outsiders as it is, and dredging up history like that...eek.

London! Agatha Christie Segment was there.

This would be so hard to arrange. If I still lived in Ohio I would definitely be all for doing it there in Circleville or Columbus area. That would be so cool to spend an evening in Circleville. I really hope to move back to Ohio in a few years.

Considering there's so much weird stuff that happens in Florida, that would be the perfect state to have an UM meetup. Maybe one of the activities could be a convenience store crawl, like those bar crawls that are popular these days. And we could do a salad making contest. If only we could find out if Jule Taylor is still alive, he could judge. :D

I like the Spokane idea! Or a gathering at a haunted bed and breakfast like general Wayne inn for example. I want to see a Hession soldier. Nevertheless it would make for some good laughs.

Unfortunately, the General Wayne Inn isn't an Inn or even a tavern anymore.

It was converted to a synagogue a few years after a case of murder/suicide in the late 90's (see Forensic Files, season 10, ep 36)

My first thought was to suggest we all meet (barefoot) in the parking lot of the Glass Bank in Cocoa Beach, but it was torn down in February of '15
