View Full Version : A lot of the jokes wouldn't be allowed today...

It's not a very racy show but still, nearly every joke about homosexuality in the show refers to it as a "lifestyle choice" or "decision"...today that would be really taboo. In fairness, Spin City was likely the first show with open gay status as a relatively "normal" supporting actor. It also likely featured the first official "bromance" (meaning an "implied sexual relationship between two males who only have only a platonic friendship but argue over personal disagreements despite the friendship that gives the false appearance of a marriage".) and between the gay man and the most homophobic (well, jackass too:lol:) character of the show.

Plus, the show did have a whole bunch of scenes which included animal abuse (Rags especially even though, he was already a suicidal animal).

Then again, to give Spin City (https://www.datalounge.com/thread/23736671-spin-city) some credit, the character (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/SpinCity) that Michael Boatman played was ridiculously stereotyped, and his sexuality really wasn't a running joke. The fact that Carter just so happens to be gay wasn't even made into a big deal. He was a fully realized character who just happened to be attracted to men.
