The 3ft 8in actor, who starred in six Star Wars films as well as Time Bandits and Flash Gordon, had died age 83.

Baker first played the robot character in the first Star Wars film in 1977. He also starred in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, together with three Star Wars prequels, from 1999 to 2005 and appeared in other films, including The Goonies, Time Bandits and Flash Gordon.

His niece, Abigail Shield, paid tribute to her uncle: “It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.”

“He was asked to go out to LA for the new Star Wars premiere but he was told he was too ill to travel. Luckily he did manage to meet George Lucas again when he came to Manchester.”

Who will replace Kenny Baker to play R2-D2?

Kenny didn't play R2 in Part VII, he only served as consultant to the actor that did (Jimmy Vee ), Kenny couldn't play the part due to his health and age.
