Okay, I watch ODAAT everyday on Antenna TV and I clearly missed what happened to Alex's dad? Also why did his mom just move and leave him with Ann?

Alex's dad died in a car accident, and Alex's mom agreed to leave him with Ann for the semester.

Pretty much what the above says. Nick was killed by a drunk driver, and Alexs mom felt her and her new husband would be travelling around too much, and felt Alex would be better in one place. She was paying his room and board.

as a kid watching the show i always assumed that Alex's mom had had enough of the annoying brat and just wanted to find someone to pawn him off on.
