Dick Wolf’s "Chicago" franchise has mastered the art of crossovers both big and large, but "Chicago P.D." and "Chicago Fire" will take that to the next level this season with a fresh cross-show romance.

EW has learned that "Chicago Fire’s" Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and "Chicago P.D.’s" Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) will become involved in the upcoming TV season.

“It started to gain some traction because of the actors,” executive producer Matt Olmstead tells EW.

“There’s plenty to play in terms of the May-December version of Brett to Antonio — his character has a couple kids, he’s divorced, no way should he be with this woman, but she’s had her heart broken. She’s looking for a real man, he qualifies. He’s looking for a real soul, a real heart, and she qualifies.”

The question remains how this new relationship will sit with "Fire’s" Dawson (Monica Raymund).

“In the middle of it you have his sister, who works with Brett,” Olmstead says. “So far it’s been playing really well for us, but there will be little brush strokes as we go along. We’ll see where it goes.”

This isn’t the first time "Chicago" shows have explored romance across hours.

"P.D.’s" Lindsay (Sophia Bush) and "Fire’s" Severide (Taylor Kinney) didn’t work out, while "Fire’s" Mouch (Christian Stolte) and "P.D.’s" Platt (Amy Morton) got married.

“We like those inter-show romances,” Olmstead says. “They can be hard to facilitate scheduling-wise, but they do work.”

The fourth season of "Chicago P.D." premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. ET.

The fifth season of "Chicago Fire" debuts Tuesday, Oct, 11 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
