View Full Version : Do you hate modern technology?
Crusinforabrusin 08-05-2016, 05:44 PM I do. The only upside is the advancement of medical treatments. That's it. The downside is that people actually like this modern technology. You have crappy social media sites like Facebook that only cause drama and Twitter where people post about what they had for breakfast. Who cares? Not to mention the way people get entertainment these days. They use dumb streaming services like Hulu or some other services. Then there's rental services like Netflix that just suck. Don't you remember the days when you would go to Blockbuster every Friday night and rent a few movies and beg your mom to buy you some of that delicious candy they sold? And you can't forget VHS. I don't know about you, but I especially have fond memories of those orange colored VHS'S. But unfortunately, streaming services are taking over and less and less people are buying actual DVDs anymore. It's sad to think that dumb streaming services are taking over as the new main way to view entertainment. I hope there's still people out there that will continue to buy DVDs like I do!
Yeah yeah. Sorry about that rant but I had to get it out before I really exploded with anger. Have a good evening everyone!
icecream 08-05-2016, 06:05 PM Facebook isn't crappy, I am on it every day. Besides the posts from my friends, there are several games I like on Facebook.
Torgo 08-05-2016, 06:20 PM You're using modern technology to access this website to complain about modern technology.
mets82 08-05-2016, 07:04 PM I'm on Facebook all the time and sometimes I'm on Twitter. But I do agree about VHS. How am I supposed to tape stuff? You can buy DVD'S but. a ) the show or shows might not be on DVD. and B) they dub over the music.
Yes, there is Netflix but I rarely watch any of today's shows. Feel like it would be a waste of money.

I can agree with you in some ways but in general I don't feel so negative towards the modern technology :) The medical treatment became really better, as also the equipment for making tattoos like here http://tattoo-journal.com/top-10-best-tattoo-kits/, mobile telephones, computers and so on... A lot of positive sides in all of that! :)
I remember such days with the VHS too but I can't say that I really miss them because nowadays all that stuff is much cooler and simplier  And if you don't like smth, you can just not to use it :)
I don't buy the DVDs but I buy the CD with music of my favourite bands :)
And stupid people existed always, despite the modern technology...

OH Nuts! 08-06-2016, 03:49 PM Yes and no. Yes, because cell phones and iPads make contacting others and getting information much much easier than the "old days". No, because so many become glued to their devices that they forget the simple pleasures of visiting someone in person, a nice walk in the park, getting glued to a great
Book etc.
mets82 08-06-2016, 04:28 PM OH Nuts your right.
tlc38tlc38 08-06-2016, 04:56 PM I'm not a fan of Facebook, Twitter, or social media in general but I will say this.....
Everything in moderation.
Too much of a good thing is never a good thing.
Bonniegirl 08-06-2016, 05:06 PM What's a shame is a lot of jobs were lost in the computer age. Not as many people are needed in an office and other jobs as in the old days when work was done manually not all computerized! Also cyber bullying and stalking became a problem do to modern technology!
Other than that it is really cool and fun! Look at all the cool conversations and fun we have right here on Sitcoms online ! Meeting new friends here and on other website forums! And cellphones are really practical, having access to a phone wherever you are ,esp.in emergency or dangerous situations, it's great to be able to call for help at your finger tips!
Nordy 08-06-2016, 05:17 PM I'm okay with computers and social media. That's how I met a lot of my online friends like on here, talked with my cousins I have never met before on Facebook. Only thing I don't like is when people sit in a room 80 out of 100 people are on there phones and the other 20 such as myself don't have a smart phone sit there and like uhhhh what do I do now since no one communicates with anyone.
pkripper001 08-06-2016, 05:58 PM To be politically correct, lets not call Facebook crappy.
We would not want to offend anyone. But we can call it what it is:
junky
lousy
trashy
Twitter, although I do not like it to transmit information,it is good to receive information from important people who have a life worth reading about.
Renting a movie for me was more along the lines of once every leap year.
That is not true, but I only remember renting about four or five times ever.
Only thing I can recall on orange VHS was Rug rats, not that I watched that, but do remember having ,or still may have one.
The DVD is going the way of the CD,and what had happen to it around the year 2000,where people were download from Napster for free.
Crusinforabrusin 08-06-2016, 06:04 PM Facebook isn't crappy, I am on it every day. Besides the posts from my friends, there are several games I like on Facebook.
According to Researchers, There are reports that using Facebook makes your life worse and makes you feel jealous about other people's lives. And it's also a fact that Facebook is all full of drama. People complain all the time on there and are always negative. That's why Facebook does suck and why I quit using it. Facebook will ruin your life , and even worse if you become addicted to it.

Well...I did lose a friend in my Facebook friends, but that's his loss...
I was ranting about Cleveland when the Cavs were 1-3 in the NBA Finals (That series is probably going to be the top-10 NBA Finals), but the wife of my ex-pastor said don't take it personally... he's trying to move-on.
And yes...sometimes modern technology eats! I'm writing this on my tablet and sometimes they'll insist another word that I didn't write (I would write Cavs and they insist that I wrote Cave)! I'll never let go of my VHS, I even have tapes that are 20 years old and work VERY well!

I know my iPad does the same thing: it insists on"correcting" me and drives me batty.
Most modern technology is good, it makes life easier and you can get things done quicker. The one thing I hate is the automated phone system you get when you call just about any business. It wastes your time and your phone minutes and leaves you just plain mad.
treky 08-08-2016, 01:09 AM the thing I about Facebook is when people post their vacation pictures on it. Since I'm in a wheelchair I can't get around good and seeing pictures of people's vacations etc. seems like they're saying "HA HA! We can go there and you can't!"
Furienna 08-08-2016, 02:33 PM I have to say that for being as relatively young as I am, I'm kind of slow at adapting to the new technology. I still use VHS once in a while, and I have never joined any social media. I have mostly stopped using my old audio casettes though. Those were the good old days, when I had to use an old-fashioned walkman to listen to music on my walks... ;)
I finally got my own Ipad for my birthday back in June. Nevertheless though, I still prefer to use my stationary computer. And yeah, I too just hate how the dumb Ipad will auto-correct me. It will even randomly change a lot of English words into Swedish words!

Sorry to hear that...with me, I have no car so I really can't go anywhere and my work seems to tie me down. I also don't have much money so it's like I'm kinda shut-in.

Yeah, at one time I was pursuing a job in advertising/public relations and watching shows like Bewitched or Mad Men about this industry shows how different it was. Granted there was a lot of sexism but there were jobs. Now with the internet one person can do the job of several people. People blame outsourcing for the loss of jobs (and it is a huge factor)but people fail to realize that technology means a job duty that used to take a week can be done in a day or even an hour.
Regarding social media, in the last month I have lost close to 10 FB friends. A couple may have just unfriended because they were "cleaning house" but others I know it was based on their idolizing Trump and me not. Common sense would be to say that our views are different, but no they decided my views were wrong. They would even start Trump comments on topics unrelated to him (like me going back to school) then get mad because I deleted the post. Sorry, but not everything is political and some are making it that that. My neighbor even blocked me and no idea why she did. I think she is mad because I made a comment about the local mom's group making comments about me. I have been the victim of cyber bullying and stalking too. With cyber bullying, I had an instance where it carried over to real life and people mad because on FB I stated I only date the childfree. I was confronted about this. I had guys who found me from dating sites on Facebook because I had some of the same photos (now deleted). One guy kept trying to friend me, then when I rejected him was trying to send me messages.
Having said that, the internet has done some good things. For instance my next semester is 12 credits online. The reason is because most of them conflict with other things I do so it was either online or not at all. FB is good with connecting with my high school classmates I haven't seen in 20 years. It's even opened some jobs to me that I do on a freelance basis.
Tubehead 08-11-2016, 10:29 PM yes i guess i do like modern technology!! i even had my own web site for couple years!! now i mostly just get on face book! we were doing my web site but me & my dad just decided to do face book cause the web page builder was going to make you pay for it!! then they were fading away so i just decided to do face book plus all my friends form high school & my family gets on face book! !i did netflix for couple years & i still brought dvds!! we don't do the down load but we rent movies on dvd!! i like it cause if an movie wasn't any good then you know not to buy it!! i also like face book my cousins are missionaries they live over seas!! i talk to the all the time through face book!!i also found some of my friends from high school on face book !! i also made new friends form high school on face book!! i especially like you tube facebook & messages boards & e-mails! i love you tube especially if there's an christian cd coming out about week or before whole month you can listen to just about the whole album for free i also like watching music videos too!! i also like dvr my mp3 player! only thing i don;t own is an cell phone!! i also like playing video games i own an play station 3 and my mom & dad got me last christmas!! an playstation vita its an hand held video game system!!

As far as the Trump stuff one has got nothing to do with the other. It shouldn't matter if you like Trump or not.

I also hate those phone trees.
MrCleveland 09-02-2016, 07:12 AM I also hate my tablet having to collapse the keyboard app.
I'll write something down on Facebook and then...the keyboard part will collapse while I'm typing! VERY annoying!
Flying Dutchman 09-09-2016, 03:01 PM I agree and disagree. We are losing more freedoms,Liberties with technology, but as was already said, "Things that used to take days to do, or even weeks, can be done in hours now. I have connected to people I never thought I would hear from again from my past on Facebook, so that's been a friend in itself. Back in the day, big movie studios couldn't do with their million dollar camera's and technology nearly as much as we can do with a simple 99 dollar smartphone camera today. Imagine taking a Galaxy S7 back in time to the 70s, and rubbing it in NASA'a face, lol. That is if you could do it without getting it confiscated by the government. But in the 1970s, we didn't have the problem of Identity theft like we do today, that I believe started with the internet, unless you count the Great Ferdinand Waldo Demara.
Furienna 09-22-2016, 08:39 AM The problem with my tablet (well, one of them anyway) is that I get pains in my arm, if I use it too much while lying down. Sigh... But I just came up with a great idea: plugging in the tablet to my stationary computer's loudspeakers, so I can listen to music at a good sound quality. :D
Walter White 10-03-2016, 07:10 PM I'm not against anything that makes anything easier.
Furienna 10-27-2016, 06:59 AM I have to wonder though if new technology automatically makes everything so much easier for everyone. For example, it is no longer possible for me to record stuff directly from my TV set. Which I could do for the first thirty years of my life.
Mace Dolex 10-27-2016, 04:50 PM I do miss the days when every Friday as a kid was movie night and my dad would take us to rent a movie, nowadays every movie I like I probably have on DVD/BD that I don't bother with streaming online, why do I have to log on to my accont when I can pop in the DVD anytime?
I will say the internet has it's advantages as we can get up to the minute news on upcoming TV and movies there is of course knowing spoilers too much but that's really up to the individual that wants to know more.
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Photochat, Skype, I never use them since I'm not a socialble person anyway so I'm not missing out on anything.
Zoneboy 10-27-2016, 05:22 PM Actually if you're referring to computers , they have been around since the 1940s, so they are not really "modern" technology
Maybe so, but the internet is modern technology so Torgo is correct.

Facebook has TRACKING IMAGES on alot of sites now and if you accept the image (display it),your location is marked with them! (IP,site, etc)
I also click NO when it comes up..... Im almost @ the point of blocking facedork in my host file! (Its getting more and more)
Furienna 10-31-2016, 03:13 PM Yes, I'm not a fan of Facebook either. Then again, as long as you don't hang out at Facebook yourself, which I don't, I don't see that you should get any trouble from other people using it.

That's one of many reasons I don't do Facebook, social media, etc. I don't feel the need to put all of my deepest personal info out there for whoever to see and take advantage of. As far as Google I think it's pretty much unavoidable. Unless you never use it (which is impossible for most) they're going to take notes and record your search history, which I suppose has some advantages, but still makes me feel a little uneasy sometimes knowing that someone is always watching.
Of course SitcomsOnline is another story. I really enjoy this place. :)
Caroline13 03-02-2024, 04:02 PM As long as I continue to be alive on this planet, I use what I am forced to and leave the rest behind, so so so so much I don't NEED and that goes for all on the planet....
TheLittleFaerie 03-02-2024, 05:49 PM Some I like, some I don't. My REAL life is very limited, so I like Facebook, as I've made a lot of good friends I otherwise wouldn't have. But I still prefer movie theaters over streaming, writing checks to paying online USUALLY, Ideally I'd love a world were all these things could exist side by side
Dude111 03-02-2024, 08:20 PM not EVERYONE is, I'm not:lol:Well we are glad of that :)
Furienna 03-05-2024, 05:22 AM Now, it's been a while since this thread was last active and lots of things have happened.
So I guess I can only admit that I joined Facebook in 2019.
Tankeryanker 03-05-2024, 11:24 AM I am all for modern technology. Learn it or get left behind?
Caroline13 03-05-2024, 01:42 PM Yeah let it destroy our country that has worked very well for decades...!!!
Wouldn't it be great the next time the U.S. goes to war, just send in an army of robots, no real soldiers needed... We can end up with a ton of dead robots.
Modern Tech has made my life SO much easier. Cell Phones was a game-changer according to my grand-ma.
My grand-ma is cool. Loves new tech and stays up-to-date.

Coffeecup 03-09-2024, 08:43 PM For every good thing that computer technology does, a few bad things come too. Television is wonderful but I sit too much and watch. I was at a doctors office a few days age and everyone except me had a tablet and their eyes were glued to them. No one talked to one another anymore. I would rather have a supermarket cashier helped with my purchases than struggle withe self help machine. We are losing our sociality with others.
Caroline13 03-09-2024, 10:08 PM I was in a doc's office last week and 4 of us had to go to an other room as our eyes were being dialated or we have to wait for something else and we 4 "older" folks were talking to one another.
I don't HATE tech, but it's gone too far and done damage and forget the social aspects of people with people.
Our long time newspaper industries are almost Dead, so many jobs lost.

I really don't sit a lot in front of a TV set these days as I have back and neck pains.
I prefer to watch TV shows and movies on my tablet lying down in my bed.
Which wouldn't have been a thing only twenty years ago, so I'm grateful for that development.
And it's hardly weird either to not talk to strangers in a doctor's office here in Sweden.
But that is of course a cultural thing...
biffbronson 03-10-2024, 10:02 AM Our long time newspaper industries are almost Dead, so many jobs lost.
Magazine circulation too, in most cases, is just a fraction of what it once was. Omni magazine went digital-only back in 1996, so that was an early sign. Way back in the early 1960s, the print run of Look magazine was an incredible 7.5 million copies per issue...!!!
I use digital technology all day long, so I do like it, but mostly I'm just connecting to the past in various ways.

Gotta keep back and neck and all joints moving, doing nothing is not helping to make them stronger..Exercise, stretching, walking all of it and you sound pretty young,
It's pathetic t hat people do NOT talk to "strangers"...what is wrong with that? Fear to talk to someone you don't know. In my life I know that moving West to CA from the East Cold states, people are a lot more OPEN to talk to a lot of different people....and Warmer in general.
This reminds me of a time when I visited London and met up with a couple guys from our Company who were in EU and when I was leaving the situation I went to hug one of the guys and he FROZE up, a single hugless guy.....

I'm sorry, but when did I say that I don't move around or that I do "nothing"?
It is when I sit down and don't move, that I get pains.
And again, it is an cultural thing here in the Nordic countries to not intrude on strangers.
But things are of course not that way in other parts of the world, but that is natural for us...
