VH1 & Ice Cube Partner on Hip Hop Version of "Hollywood Squares"
by Denise Petski
July 28, 2016

The classic "Hollywood Squares" is getting a Hip Hop makeover. VH1 and Ice Cube are teaming up on "Hip Hop Squares", slated for a fall premiere.

In the new version, celebrity contestants will match wits and test their pop culture knowledge with the superstar squares, featuring the biggest names in hip hop, comedy and entertainment.

“’Hip Hop Squares’ is going to be fun and spontaneous; unlike typical game shows, viewers should never know what’s going to happen next,” said Ice Cube.

“When VH1 asked us to join the producing team, we jumped aboard as we have had success with VH1, and we love their team, excitement and commitment to the show.”

“Ice Cube is one of the most prolific figures in Hip Hop history and American culture at large,” added VH1 and Logo President Chris McCarthy.

“We are thrilled to partner with him and CBS Distribution to reinvent one of America’s most iconic game shows with ‘Hip Hop Squares.’”

Ice Cube will executive produce, with his Cube Vision production company, Jesse Collins Entertainment and Jeff Kwatinetz’s The Firm producing. Jesse Collins will also executive produce.

Producer, actor, filmmaker and member of N.W.A., O’Shea Jackson, aka Ice Cube, most recently, starred in and produced Barbershop: The Next Cut and the Oscar nominated Straight Outta Compton.

Strange they're acting like this hasn't been done before. It's a remake, there's already been a version of Hip Hop Squares although I can't remember the original host's name right now. I watched it a couple times and hated it. So I won't be watching this version either.

The last host of Hip Hop Squares you were thinking of was Peter Rosenberg.

Although Peter Rosenberg is East Coast and had proper influence,he was just getting into Hip Hop when Hip Hop was dieing out in 1993. To define dieing out,I talking about sampling was free at first, which was artists would simply use portions of other
artists' recordings, without permission, then they made significant money,
the original artists began to take legal action, claiming copyright infringement.
This lead to the demise of sampling, one of Hip Hops greatest strongholds
Peter Rosenberg was only fourteen in 1993 when Hip Hop was dieing out for multiple reasons. The point I am trying to make is,Peter Rosenberg was not qualified enough to host Hip Hop Squares. So it may have been done before, with the wrong host,it was never hosted correctly and should not be looked at as an example of what is to come. Ice Cube might make a good host, but I feel Ice-T would be more suited of the 2.

Most,or none, of the celebrity contestants & squares were active prior to '86.

Kid 'N Play and Ice Cube both debuted there first record in 1986.

Whats needed here is some representation from old-school hip hop, prior to '86

Some examples:

Bambaataa
Newcleus
Melle Mel

KRS-One would be perfect,he started in 1985,but is considered Golden age.
