I usually don't post on this particular sub-forum, but I had to show my enthusiasm for a new Netflix original series called "Stranger Things." I don't usually watch Netflix originals, but I gave this one a shot out of sheer random chance and am very glad I did. I am sure a lot of you have probably seen it, but if you haven't, I highly suggest checking it out.
It is essentially a sci-fi horror series with a very Stephen King/David Lynch feel to it. It is set in 1983 and the producers really did a nice job with the authenticity of the clothing, the music, the houses, the cars, etc. I usually loathe anything that is sci-fi or supernatural horror, but I enjoyed this because of the excellent acting and strong focus on the characters. It is not a cheap CGI fest like we have seen with a gazillion Sci-Fi network originals.
The two most well known actors are Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine, but the whole cast is pretty excellent. The plot is very "X-Files-ish" though it is continuous and not an anthology. It also has a "Twin Peaks" type of atmosphere, but a little more accessible than David Lynch (who loves to be frustratingly obscure). Some people say it reminds them a lot of "E.T." and "Stand By Me" and I agree. Even though the plot is nothing like "Stand By Me," it still has that "kids in trouble and they must solve it themselves" type of vibe to it (the neighborhood kids are trying to find their missing friend). I suppose that it just reminds me of a lot of movies I watched as a kid in the 80's and perhaps that's why I like it so much.
There is only one season (8 episodes) that are an hour long each. I watched them all in one sitting (yeah, I no lifed it). Netflix has not yet given the green light for season 2, but I suspect it will happen because I think its popularity has far surpassed their expectations.
