I don't know what they have planned but if I turn the channel on and see those programs along with Downtown Julie Brown or any other VJ that wasn't among the original 5 then I'm done with it. I can tolerate B&B but classic MTV for me will always be the first 5 years only. I like the idea and hopefully I won't be disappointed.

The original thread had a source that was questionable at best. After finding the commercial that confirmed it I decided to start one on the music board which is actually where it belongs when it involves the subject of classic MTV.

I don't know about any other veejays but I know for sure J.J. Jackson is dead. And I believe he was on MTV from the start.

We know they hired Matt Pinfield to do voice work based on the promo. I guess it's possible they could bring back old VJ's to host segments or have them do voice work. Probably not much of a budget to work with. VH1 Classic wasn't exactly paying a whole lot for the few shows they produced. The syndicated stuff (including movies, concerts, etc) were mostly shared/leftovers.

Surely they'll air the very first hour of MTV programming when VH1 Classic relaunches. I wonder if they will include the original promos and commercials seen during that first hour back in 1981? They did when they streamed it online for their 25th anniversary. Nevertheless, even for someone who was born in 1994, this will be exciting!

I remember when VH1 Classic aired MTV's first ever hour back in 1981 in honor of their 30th anniversary (since MTV proper didn't want to acknowledge past history anymore).

I hope MTV CLASSIC sticks to its name.

I remember when VH1 Classic aired MTV's first ever hour back in 1981 in honor of their 30th anniversary (since MTV proper didn't want to acknowledge past history anymore).I think I remember that; I remember a few years ago what looked like a few minutes before the "launch" of MTV, it must've been back in 2011 on, like you said, VH1 Classic. I tried to record it, but I didn't have a tape to do so. Now, 5 years later, I've got my DVR and a VCR ready to go when VH1 Classic relaunches!

This is one station I could do without. Back in the 1980's was fun to see videos with singers with their new songs. The music I liked back then. Now Comcast could delete it in my area.

I'm guessing that it's going to be like VH1 Classic but w/ more of an "edge" to it. To put it in another way, it (presumably) going to be a Gen X flavored TV Land w/ the "good" MTV as the springboard.

MTV never negotiated music rights for literally any of their shows until 2009 or so. Reason being, MTV was essentially radio, a legal grey area where it was argued any time MTV programming used music, it was free advertising. At the start of the decade, labels (post-recession, strapped for cash) told MTV that as a broadcast network, if they ever wanted to play their videos/use their music, they need to pay now. That's probably why something like MTV Classic, which seems like such an easy slam-dunk of a idea, isn't happening until just now.

Quick thoughts: Hour 1 was great! I enjoyed the classic commercials, and I already knew the Superman movie commercials would get cut as soon as I saw it on YouTube. I think there was another one that was removed? Anyway, great start to the channel. Hour 2? Kanye West? Now wait just a second! When I saw the title "Classic Videos", I immediately assumed it was '80s and '90s. I may have been born in the middle of the decade ('94), but I enjoy all of those older music videos and never cared that much for some of the music from the 2000's. Yes, I understand they will show music video blocks with videos from different decades, but I'm not sure if music videos from the 2000's are nescentially "classic"? That's just me. Also, like The Splat, they need to play old MTV bumpers when they replay their older shows. They showcased them in their original promo, so why showcase them if you won't show them? Maybe we'll see them when they play older programming? I sure hope so. The Splat does it right, especially on 'Throwback Thursday'.

UPDATE: They started Hour 4 (9:00am EDT) with a music video from 1992. It's "Bed of Roses" by Bon Jovi. It's the first pre-2000's thing I noticed, but I may have missed something before that.

I thought MTV Classic was going to debut at midnight but found out later it was 6am. I woke up, turned on the TV and expected to see classic videos. Instead I get that hideous remake of "Lady Marmalade" then more hip-hop crap. Sorry, but this is not my idea of classic videos. :rolleyes:

Well remember, we ARE talking about Viacom here. They've been known to take things and mold them into trash. Just look at MTV itself.

I know and I really wasn't expecting anything much after the first hour but calling a show classic videos and playing this crap doesn't cut it. I can still watch my tapes since I had the foresight to record a lot of videos from MTV & Much Music and of course there are other resources so this isn't really a major loss.

To a certain extent YouTube killed the MTV that showed music videos. Why should I sit through a long series of videos I don't care about to see the one I do, when I can just go to YouTube and see whatever I like. MTV only worked because MTV was the only place to get your video out there.

Their mistake in this regard was being unable to show you the videos that you want to see when you didn't realize that you wanted to see them. Beavis and Butt-head did this, but most of the rest was "show the popular stuff everyone wants to see" which became unsustainable.

MTV could have been what Pandora is today. If MTV would have gone towards streaming and give more than just hit singles a chance, they could have been just as or better than Pandora.

Only thing is that do you really want to be on your device 24/7?? I mean after awhile I'd think you'd get sick of being on your device.

The programming heads over at MTV just have absolutely no idea what they're doing. They don't know the treasure they have if it hit them in the face. What an opportunity to bring back 'Best-Of' TRL episodes at "after-school" hours, a classic 10-spot line up throughout the week (Road Rules on Mondays, Real World on Tuesdays, Diary, Fanatic), an after-hours line-up past midnight (Sifl-N-Olly, Oddville, Aeon Flux), and everything else that people love about MTV mid-'80s-late-'90s.

Instead they've used MTV Classic as MTV 3, wasting countless programming hours with marathons of Laguna Beach, and The Hills (which by the way, is still new enough to rerun ON MTV... WHICH THEY DID a week prior), VMA reruns (years, 2009-2014... NOT CLASSIC), Run's House, and the 2011 Beavis and Butthead reboot, rather than the early-'90s episodes.
