While us fans appreciate the artists responsible for our favorite horror movies, it’s no secret that the genre often doesn’t get all that much mainstream respect. It’s quite rare, for example, for a horror film to be nominated for an Academy Award, and it’s equally uncommon for horror actors/filmmakers to receive stars on Hollywood’s prestigious Walk of Fame. And that’s why we’re so very excited to announce today that George A. Romero will soon be getting his very own.

As officially announced via live stream today, Romero is in this year’s class of honorees, and the unveiling ceremony is set to take place sometime in 2017. Fans have for years been petitioning and championing for Romero’s name to be immortalized on the Walk of Fame, and a fundraising event at the 2015 Texas Frightmare Weekend is partially responsible for making it happen.

George Romero, who burst onto the scene with the 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead, is most notably responsible for creating the modern day zombie as we know it today, making him one of the most influential filmmakers in pop culture history. That it took him this long to get on the Walk of Fame is kind of a bummer, but we’re just happy that it’s finally happening next year.
