If you’re a fan of Britney Spears on Twitter, you probably saw the above photo floating around online this March. And you may wonder why her pose with Modern Family’s Ed O’Neill looks a little…awkward.
As it turns out, O’Neill had no idea he was in the company of the pop star – he thought she was just another fan! On yesterday’s episode of The Ellen Show, O’Neill told the host the story behind the goofy photo.
“I was at LAX. I was flying alone to Hawaii. I was waiting for my flight to board,” he said on the show. “They told me the flight was boarding and I picked up that little ‘Modern Family’ hat. I saw a woman approaching me so I just flopped it on, I was leaving.”
“She came up and said ‘Oh, Mr. O’Neill I love ‘Modern Family.’ You’re my favorite on the show,'” he said. Spears asked O’Neill if they could take a picture together. “[She] couldn’t have been nicer. So I said, ‘Sure, fine, ok. Sit on this.’ So she sat there and we took it and I said, ‘Have a nice trip, I’m going’ and I left. The next day my manager texts me and goes ‘What is this? 53,000 likes. It’s Britney Spears!'”
“I didn’t know it was her. I mean. Look at the look on my face,” he joked. “Do I look like I’m sitting with Britney Spears?” Even O’Neill’s daughter couldn’t believe he didn’t recognize the international star. “You know my daughter Sofia she said, ‘You are a moron.'”
