The great thing about episodic television is that it allows writers to really flesh out every character, which, in turn, allows viewers to get more invested in their stories. For the most part this is a huge positive. And, in fact, it's become the preferred method of storytelling for many of Hollywood's writers.

The unfortunate side effect of evolving characters over dozens or even hundreds of episodes is that, whether the showrunners want them to or not, these characters sometimes transform in ways that make the general public want to reach through their TV sets and strangle them until their knuckles start to cramp.

Because television series are like relationships: In the beginning, your partner is pretty much idyllic, to the point you're convinced the only thing that comes out of their butt is rainbows. As you spend more time with them, however, you notice they leave their toenail clippings on the kitchen counter and refuse to watch all Mel Brooks movies.

It can really sting.

So it is with your once-beloved television characters. Eventually, those rainbows fade away and you have to hold your nose every time they appear on screen.

Maybe the writers planned it, or maybe they just couldn't figure out how to sustain a lovable character for 10 seasons. Whatever the case, some truly wonderful, fictional people have been utterly ruined by the time of the series finale.

I have to completely disagree with John Dorian from Scrubs. I liked the character the whole time he was on. They only ruined the show when they insisted on keeping it going after Zack Braff left the series. There wasn't any point because Dr. John Dorian was the main character and it should've ended then. I won't watch any of the episodes without Zack Braff and just kind of pretend they don't exist.

I couldn't stand Rory Gilmore after a while, but in the beginning of the series I thought she was good.

I guess I can see how people might not like Leonard from BBT - really the whole cast of characters on that show have become annoying.

I disagree with Rory Gilmore too. I thought the character was likable throughout the whole series. A little naïve sometimes, but that was kind of the point. She was innocent and trusting and you watched her grow up and mature with her life experiences.

I'd add Dr. Gregory House from House too. But then he was never likable and they were never even going to try to make him likable or sympathetic. I really didn't see the point and only watched like the third and fourth seasons before I got totally sick of him and stopped watching the show. And haven't ever watched it since. Not even a rerun.

I couldn't stand her voice after a while. I don't know if I just didn't notice it at first or she just didn't do it at first, but she had this way of talking that was very babyish. It's hard to watch a show when one of the main character's voice makes you cringe.

Andy Griffith became more and more angry with each progressing season after the show went to color. The happy Sheriff was gone and he was always a grouch.

Seems like one major reason why many Andy Griffith fans prefer the B/W first five go-rounds (1960-65) over the color ones (1965-68): because, as you said, Andy Griffith became incredibly grouchy, and we didn't see the affable Sheriff Andy Taylor of before.

Most of the cast of Happy Days that were repulsive were later year replacements that were never likeable to begin with. Chachi was always repulsive.

I think from Season 1 Andy to Final Season Andy that has to be the most total transformation ever from lovable to repulsive ever on any show I have seen.

I had no problem with Leonard from TBBT. He is ok with me. Dan Conner was OK too. As one of the other memebers mentioned, Roseanne and Jackie were the problems. Darlene as well. These are the characters from the TV sitcom "Roseanne", of course.

Bev Harris was supposed to be this objectionable character on "Roseanne" but I liked her better than the other main ones we are supposed to identify with.

So its kind of like a situation where the repulsive character actually ends up being the voice of reason character in a perverse way. :D
