View Full Version : The painfully awful 1970's fashions.......
Yong Fang 05-20-2016, 11:08 PM I have been watching some Mary Tyler Moore episodes and just cringe on what they made this beautiful woman wear. Waist high pantsuits, plaid, the weird colors. In the opening credits with Mary walking down the street in a jumpsuit white with yellow plaid.....her body made up for the design:o .Mary looked good in formal wear, because that is more of a classic look. The men's clothes were just as awful. Fat ties, huge collars. Probably the everyday clothes Mary wore were designer fashions which were expensive.
Not just MTM Show but all the shows of the era, because clothes were so damned ugly in the 1970's. I blame fashion designers overuse of drugs. But people bought those ugly designs. We can look back 40 years and go "oh my God....." In embarrassment of our youth. I was a child of the 1970's, you parents dressed us like idiots.
People in the 1950's and (EARLY) 1960's had style. Then around 1967 to 1981, fashion took a vacation and let the monkeys take the wheel. Yay or nay?
Edward216 05-20-2016, 11:15 PM I grew up in the 70s and 80s, some of the fashions I liked and some I didn't. The one thing I will agree with you on is that plaid was totally overused and they made it in some really ugly colors.

Crusinforabrusin 05-20-2016, 11:29 PM 70s fashion wasn't TOO bad. If you want bad fashion , I suggest doing some research about 1980s fashion. The 1980s were the worst fashion Decade in my opinion
Edward216 05-20-2016, 11:57 PM Again there was some good and some bad fashion trends in the 80s. Every decade has its ridiculous and questionable fashions.

Patty Duke 05-21-2016, 12:33 AM I watch a lot of old shows and I have to say I like any of the old fashions better than the pants some wear today that are so low the butt cracks show, that is disgusting! ohno: ohno:
RetroGuy2000 05-21-2016, 01:46 AM Every era has its mix of good and bad fashion.
The late 1960s/early 1970s sticks out as some of the worst clothing of all time, but every era has had some terrible designs.

I think it's going too far to suggest drug abuse as having much to do with this. By that logic, were drugs involved when many '70s women's fashions BECAME POPULAR AGAIN decades later with young women, as retro looks ?? !!
There are certain things I agree about, like the wide neckties for men. But today I would rather see a woman in form-fitting 1970s bellbottoms than many of the dull (and loose) looks that came about later. It's too bad that miniskirts of the very early '70s did not endure, but those too returned at times. Give us short skirts & dresses for women!! ;)
Heidi Dawn 05-25-2016, 11:39 AM The 1990's were the worst for fashion, I didn't care for the grunge look or the sloppy rap star look. Everything was so plain. The 1960's-1980's were the best for design (not necessarily for colors or patterns).
pkripper001 05-25-2016, 01:52 PM Some people think the 1980's were the worst fashion Decade, but that's not true
1980's fashion was split into two parts.
1980 to 1988,this was the good:
Members Only Jackets,Suede Pumas
Then the last year,1989,the bad, that is what most people remember.
But it was only one year, this is when the grunge look started
and gave the entire decade a bad name.
LUNCH 05-29-2016, 01:59 PM The 1970s often get a bad rap for fashions but I don't think they were that bad. At least they had style and were colorful. They were a lot better than the generic way of dressing or fashion(if you can call it that) of the past 20 years or so.

Agreed 100%.
jimpickens 05-30-2016, 03:18 AM Over use of polyester is what gives the 70s a bad rap and I agree the 90s was the worst decade ever
UMFaninMD 06-04-2016, 11:26 PM Every decade has its share of awful clothes. Being an 80's kid, I look back at music videos, movies, and shows and cringe at some of the stuff I wore. But leggings under long tunics and sweaters are popular again, the ripped jeans...it all comes back in cycles. It probably won't be long before we see the 90's grunge again, along with all the velvet tops, dresses, and those choker necklaces that were so popular in the 90's. I think the problem with the 70's was way too much polyester, tight pants that created cameltoe, and gaudy colors. The one trend I couldn't stand was those tight turtlenecks men wore with leather jackets and sport coats. It screamed thug to me because all the bad guys on 70's crime shows wore those!
jimpickens 06-05-2016, 12:12 AM Yeah it kinda made you come off as being a wiseguy
