Does anyone know what KAPO and LAGERKAPO means? It's suppose to be German or something...

Hmmm....well I cannot tell you for sure...I looked it up on dictionary.com and also entered it into two different online translation devices and came up with nothing every time.

However....doing a search on google.com leads me to believe that it is a German word for executioner, or perhaps even more specifically, an executioner that hangs someone. It could also be a word specifically used to describe a Nazi executioner. All the references I read about referred to a "lagerkapo" as a Nazi executioner, usually hanging someone.

So I don't know for sure, but that should be close. Are you reading "Night" by any chance? I remember I think they used that word in that book. At any rate, check out google for yourself to see if you concur with what I found. Good luck! :D

Okay, I looked the words up in my German dictionary, and neither one is listed. However, the verb "kapen" is "to chop" so executioner is probably a good guess. I can't find any listing of it as a German word in any of my sources, but if it's a form of slang or is from the 40s Nazi era, it may not be used any more. Hope that helps! :wave:
