I got a idea from another tread, how about listing characters you didn't like for whatever reason that should have been one-offs. I'll start with the usual suspects. Helen, Howard, & Emit.

View Full Version : Which regular character should have been a one-off? JJM 05-10-2016, 03:26 PM I got a idea from another tread, how about listing characters you didn't like for whatever reason that should have been one-offs. I'll start with the usual suspects. One shot episode for the character?? pkripper001 05-13-2016, 11:37 PM Yes,one shot for the character and no return to the series. I can not think of one person other then Helen. Helen should be the number one person in every persons list. Zoneboy 05-13-2016, 11:58 PM Warren Ferguson, once is often, twice is endless. Mayberry'sBadBoy 05-14-2016, 08:25 PM Helen fits the bill, though Goober also fits the bill in my book. Duster76 05-16-2016, 05:58 PM I found both the Darlings and Ernest T Bass annoying, hated those episodes. Zoneboy 05-16-2016, 06:16 PM I found both the Darlings and Ernest T Bass annoying, hated those episodes. I enjoyed those characters, they should've been used more often. omg65 05-17-2016, 10:08 AM I really never cared much for the 2 mayors of Mayberry but am not sure how many appearances each one made.I'm pretty certain they each made more than 1 appearance. They were whiny and very annoying IMO. SarahBellum 08-09-2021, 03:26 PM I really never cared much for the 2 mayors of Mayberry but am not sure how many appearances each one made.I'm pretty certain they each made more than 1 appearance. They were whiny and very annoying IMO. I liked the fat little mayor Pike (Dick Elliott) more than mayor Stoner (Parley Baer). Stoner seemed to be grumpy all the time (except when he drank from the tainted water cooler - haha). Mayor Pike was based on a real businessman in Griffith's hometown of Mt. Airy, which Mayberry was based on. Dick Elliott appeared in 11 episodes of TAGS and died during season 2 of heart illness. Parley Baer appeared in 7 episodes of TAGS during season 3. SarahBellum 08-09-2021, 03:49 PM I found both the Darlings and Ernest T Bass annoying, hated those episodes. The first two appearances of the Darlings were OK. Subsequent appearances were rather silly. As for Ernest T, once was enough. He was a nut. Samme 08-09-2021, 10:33 PM I can't really say that about any regular character, even Helen. When she wasn't being overly nasty (and sometimes she wasn't) she helped the show. I usually wanted to see more of the semi-regulars. I didn't only on very minor characters. I didn't really want to see a second appearance by Jim Lindsey or Gilly Walker. Howard Hesseman didn't fit the show. The Darlings did wear thin because they took over their episodes, but I did like them. The only person I might say is Ellie Walker. If we had seen her only once, everyone (including me) would have wanted to see more of her. But the character really didn't go anywhere or add to the show. She was very pretty but didn't add warmth. Elinor was right in saying that the chemistry just wasn't there. Zoneboy 08-09-2021, 10:51 PM Who did Howard Hesseman play on TAGS? I don't recall him being on the show. Samme 08-09-2021, 10:58 PM The surly counter guy in Goober Goes to the Auto Show and the surly fisherman when Emmitt runs for councilman. Hazel Anyday 08-09-2021, 11:00 PM I wouldn't have minded if Goober was a one off. He was just annoying and stubbornly stupid as he wouldn't ever do as he was told. Once was enough, a gob of Goob is a gob too much. Zoneboy 08-09-2021, 11:03 PM The surly counter guy in Goober Goes to the Auto Show and the surly fisherman when Emmitt runs for councilman. No wonder, I haven't seen the color episodes in several years. Ignatowski 08-10-2021, 04:58 AM Ernest T Bass.....Ernest T Bass and Ernest T Bass. I cannot watch any episodes with him. As soon as he appears it's automatic channel change. Never found him even remotely funny ,especially the episode where he wants a uniform. The Darlings are a close 2nd. AB 08-10-2021, 05:08 PM Warren Ferguson, once is often, twice is endless. I agree with you about Warren. He was so annoying. I also didn't like Ben Weaver. He was on several episodes and was kind of hateful to everyone. AB 08-10-2021, 05:10 PM Ernest T Bass.....Ernest T Bass and Ernest T Bass. I cannot watch any episodes with him. As soon as he appears it's automatic channel change. Never found him even remotely funny ,especially the episode where he wants a uniform. The Darlings are a close 2nd. I always thought he was funny especially when he kept escaping out of the jail cell. GentlemanJim 08-10-2021, 08:31 PM I believe that Warren is the defacto first choice......but beyond that, I never really enjoyed Malcom Merriweather, either. Years ago I would have had Clara Edwards at the top of my list, but can see now that she played the perfect meddlesome busybody....I think that I hated her at one time for being so perfect in that role Road Dog 08-30-2021, 03:58 PM Mayor Stoner He was the typical politician. He looked down on Andy's idea about the cow thief and quickly aligned himself with the detective from the state office (The Cow Thief). He looked down on Rafe Hollister and quickly aligned himself with Ms Jeffries (Rafe Hollister Sings). He swindled Andy for his fish pole (The Bed Jacket). And he reprimanded Barney for ticketing the governor's car (Barney and the Governor). Mayor Stoner was just a terrible person. Zoneboy 08-30-2021, 04:47 PM What about one shot characters who should've appeared more than once? Ed Sawyer immediately comes to mind. He decides to make Mayberry his home, but as far as I know he's never seen again. GentlemanJim 08-30-2021, 11:15 PM What about one shot characters who should've appeared more than once?
