When Supergirl premiered on CBS late in 2015, it joined a rather lengthy list of superhero-focused TV that included Fox’s Gotham, Netflix’s Daredevil, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter, as well as The CW’s DC Comics universe consisting of Arrow and The Flash. Throughout Supergirl’s first season, it has been joined by new series like Netflix’s Jessica Jones and The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow. All this is to say, Supergirl arrived at a time in which TV fans have a glut of options ranging in various tones and subject matter all under the superhero umbrella. Created by Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family, Chuck) and Greg Berlanti (the architect behind Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow), Supergirl seemed to provide perfect counter-programming to the other superhero series on television with its light and optimistic tone.

It isn’t surprising when we hear news that shows like Arrow and The Flash received season renewals, given how rabid the fanbases are, but somehow we’re still living in a world where CBS still hasn’t put in an order for Supergirl (http://forums.previously.tv/topic/15115-supergirl-media/?page=10) Season 2. CBS and Warner Bros. are reportedly in the middle of negotiation talks where Supergirl is concerned, and though the network is on board with hosting a second season, the problem lies with the licensing fees that CBS is paying just to air the show, which is right around $3 million. It’s absolutely a tough decision for CBS execs to make, since there isn’t much to inspire confidence that Supergirl’s audience will grow in the future. Few things are more important than advertising dollars, and Supergirl is likely a big draw for companies, despite not matching the ratings of CBS’ other major dramas, since it’s a character with international recognition.

It Sounds Like ‘Supergirl’ Was Never Really In Jeopardy Of Being Cancelled (http://uproxx.com/tv/supergirl-renewal-cbs/)
