When a show begins, audiences gather round their television (or more frequently, their computer screen) to check it out and see what all the fuss is about. Those uninterested move on, whereas those who like what they see continue watching, and overtime become fans of the show.

This process is important because fans are what keep TV programs sustainable. If there aren't enough of them, shows get cancelled. But fans can also be extremely damaging, too. The more passionate they become the more vocal they are about their opinion.

In a best case scenario, writers ignore this and tell the story they want to tell. More often than not, however, this simply doesn't happen. And at the end of the day, writers desperately need their fans to keep watching, even if this means changing their vision because of it.

i agree about community i really enjoyed the first season but after that it just got really stupid i finally grew to hate the show so much i just could not watch it anymore

I blame some of the problems with modern Doctor Who on the powers-that-be's reluctance to think outside the box, especially when it comes to companions. The writers can't get past the "companion must be a young, pretty girl from 21st century London" outline. There were two exceptions with Donna and Rory, who ended up being two of the most popular characters, so it's sad to see the pandering to the young female fans who just want to see year after year of Rose with the Tenth Doctor. The fallback on using the same villains is tiresome too. Hopefully with the new showrunner, we'll see some new monsters and aliens, and finally the end of River Song.
