There shouldn't be a problem playing British tapes on a European VCR. You can't play PAL tapes in a NTSC VCR, though.

It will play them but it wont display properly (black and white, rolling picture, etc.) on an NTSC television set unless its capable. You need a signal convertor in that case.

hi, thanks for replies. got this signal converter off of ebay: 1080P PAL/NTSC/SECAM to PAL/NTSC MINI Bi-directional TV Format System Converter for $15 it does not convert the signal to play. if i connect aiwa HV-MX1 multi system directly to tv, i get a clear b&w pic and nice audio. if i connect aiwa vcrf to my dvd recorder, i get a split picture (bottom of pic at top of screen above a black line across pic and top of pic below). when i use the above mentioned converter there is no signal recognition at all. i have been doing some research and believe i need a video enhancer. please advise. any and all information would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hey Stoogedog,
Yeah, the PAL and NTSC thing is a bit tricky.
My advice is to just use a DVD Recorder that will record in PAL.
I have a Lite On LVW-5005 unit. In the setup menu, when I select "TV Type" is PAL, the Lite On flips everything over to PAL format.
No, the signal with not look right on your NTSC TV while you are recording the tape to DVD. But, if you then play the recorded disc on a Region Free DVD player that converts PAL DVD's to NTSC, your disc will look great.
Good luck,
Peter
