I went to a private elementary school ran by a evil, petty woman, and I was sooooo happy to get the hell out of there at 2:30. I would come home and watch Leave it to Beaver at 3:00 and The Munsters at 3:30 on Channel 3 in Memphis.

This was a CBS affiliate and CBS had a show that was similar to the "ABC Afterschool Special". Forgot the name of the show, but I would get MAD when they took off Beaver and the Munsters for that crap. This was the 1970's and we had three channels on, and this was what I did after school, and that damned Afterschool dreck ruined my afternoon.

I was an only child and so I was exposed to a lot of adult programming and watched what my parents watched as a child, all the famous 1970's shows like MTM Show, Bob Newhart, All in the Family, Sanford and Son, etc. If I was home sick from school (freedom from jail) I would watch Donahue and The Price is Right. Donahue was very interesting (I wish he still did that show, that type of talk show was ruined by trash artists and Okra Winfrey) and well done, and watching television with my parents, I had a good understanding for a child on a lot of subjects. We would watch 60 Minutes religiously on Sundays. My father would get beat red angry when an NFL game bled into his precious show and he would bitch and pout like a spoiled child if he didn't see Mike Wallace and Morley Safer at 6 PM on the dot. Never saw "The Wonderful World of Disney" because it was on at the same time. We would also watch the Nightly News and my father would race home from whatever he was doing to watch the CBS Evening News with Uncle Wally and whoever succeeded him. My father loves the news, now he constantly watches FOX News all the time. But I also think that he watches FOX all the time because regular TV is so bad and trashy mostly and not made for someone in their 80's. Moving on...

Just thought of it, but another late afternoon show on Sundays was Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom where we saw a crazy old man named Marlin Perkins and his sidekick Jim go into Africa and elsewhere to bother the wild life while selling insurance from Nebraska. His sidekick Jim did all the dangerous stuff while Marlin was safely away cheering him on "Go Jim, grab that King Cobra by the neck!" "Run faster Jim, that hungry Polar Bear is right, right behind you!" Yeah, I am exaggerating a bit, but Wild Kingdom was a great show which educated and entertained.

My parents were good, hardworking people who had an outside life, but they were also television addicts in their free time and our TV would be on from the time we woke up until time for bed.

Saturday Night was the only night where I was allowed to stay up until midnight to watch the old Saturday Night Live Show with the original cast. Pretty much watched SNL until college in the late 1980's. I also loved the ABC show Fridays. I was 12 or 13 then, Fridays humor was a lot more sophmoric and hilarious for a kid my age. Fridays was a kick ass show which deserved to have stayed on for twenty years, but I think they pushed the envelope a bit too far for that era (Cannibal Diner was a bit far....). 1980 was an awful year, the Iranian hostages (and that awful "Tie a Yellow Ribbon song......) and the HOTTEST summer of my life, the hottest day was 108* with full humidity, with night time temps still in the 90's. Fridays filled the void when SNL had a cocaine cardiac arrest after the first cast left and before Eddie Murphy (who for you youngins, USED to be funny, USED is the term here).

My favorite cartoons were Pink Panther (the old 1960's stuff, the newer ones are not as good) and The Roadrunner. Loony Tunes cartoons were good, except for the French Skunk. Watched Fat Albert, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. Didnt like Scooby Doo, that show was lame and don't understand its appeal at all.

So, pretty varied as a kid. Sorry for the ramble, and I hope it was a trip down Memory Lane.

My memories go way back..
on Saturdays id watch bowling and then Wide World Of Sports(expect when the NBA Playoffs were on, then id switch back and forth between Wide World and the NBA game either on CBS or NBC) then the news would come on(on the ABC station) then at 7:00 would be Hee Haw on the CBS station but... the NBC station would have On Scene: Emergency Response at 7:30, halfway through Hee Haw so id go to my bedroom to watch that while my folks would watch Hee Haw.
on Wednesdays i had to stay up to watch China Beach before i went to bed there were a few nights that "CB" made me sad that i would be crying while in bed afterwards.
my folks watched 60 Minutes on Sundays and like your folks would get mad over football running late!
now i don't watch as much TV now as i used to.

usually, in the morning(read 10:00) it was a choice between Sale of the Century on the NBC station, WYFF, or the old drama show Little House on the Prairie which was on WHNS, the independent station or Pyramid was on WSPA the CBS station. SOTC, Little House, and Pyramid all aired at the same time up to 88. one of the things i noted(up to 87 when SOTC went to 10:00) was that sometimes one of the characters on Little House, either Charles or Laura would be crying at the end of a episode while on SOTC, someone would be asked whether to go on or stop. that could be very dramatic sometimes. then of course was Classic Concentration on NBC and Card Sharks on CBS then The Price is Right on CBS or Wheel of Fortune and Scrabble on NBC. Little House aired aganist TPIR, Wheel, and Scrabble for a time in 85 before switching to 10:00 in the fall of 85. Then, WHNS would have Perry Mason while the other stations had the news at noon then the soap operas would start.

once a month after the soaps, ABC would have the ABC Afterschool Special so that would go till 5:00 then the news would start.

as i said in a earlier thread the favorite prime time shows were China Beach, thirtysomething, Sisters, Nurses and a few others.

i have to agree with you about football. id tune in to watch Our House only to find that the NFL game had overran its time slot. Even though NBC would show the show in full after the last regional game was over, id still would get mad.

My parents really didn't watch much prime time tv so I never really saw much of what was on then when it first aired. I occasionally watched it with babysitters but I don't really remember what they watched.

I discovered Nick at Nite at a relatives home in the spring of 1998 and thus started my interest in old sitcoms. The first ones I remember watching were:

Laverne and Shirley
Dick Van Dyke Show

I went to a private elementary school ran by a evil, petty woman, and I was sooooo happy to get the hell out of there at 2:30. I would come home and watch Leave it to Beaver at 3:00 and The Munsters at 3:30 on Channel 3 in Memphis.

This was a CBS affiliate and CBS had a show that was similar to the "ABC Afterschool Special". Forgot the name of the show, but I would get MAD when they took off Beaver and the Munsters for that crap. This was the 1970's and we had three channels on, and this was what I did after school, and that damned Afterschool dreck ruined my afternoon.

I was an only child and so I was exposed to a lot of adult programming and watched what my parents watched as a child, all the famous 1970's shows like MTM Show, Bob Newhart, All in the Family, Sanford and Son, etc. If I was home sick from school (freedom from jail) I would watch Donahue and The Price is Right. Donahue was very interesting (I wish he still did that show, that type of talk show was ruined by trash artists and Okra Winfrey) and well done, and watching television with my parents, I had a good understanding for a child on a lot of subjects. We would watch 60 Minutes religiously on Sundays. My father would get beat red angry when an NFL game bled into his precious show and he would bitch and pout like a spoiled child if he didn't see Mike Wallace and Morley Safer at 6 PM on the dot. Never saw "The Wonderful World of Disney" because it was on at the same time. We would also watch the Nightly News and my father would race home from whatever he was doing to watch the CBS Evening News with Uncle Wally and whoever succeeded him. My father loves the news, now he constantly watches FOX News all the time. But I also think that he watches FOX all the time because regular TV is so bad and trashy mostly and not made for someone in their 80's. Moving on...

Just thought of it, but another late afternoon show on Sundays was Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom where we saw a crazy old man named Marlin Perkins and his sidekick Jim go into Africa and elsewhere to bother the wild life while selling insurance from Nebraska. His sidekick Jim did all the dangerous stuff while Marlin was safely away cheering him on "Go Jim, grab that King Cobra by the neck!" "Run faster Jim, that hungry Polar Bear is right, right behind you!" Yeah, I am exaggerating a bit, but Wild Kingdom was a great show which educated and entertained.

My parents were good, hardworking people who had an outside life, but they were also television addicts in their free time and our TV would be on from the time we woke up until time for bed.

Saturday Night was the only night where I was allowed to stay up until midnight to watch the old Saturday Night Live Show with the original cast. Pretty much watched SNL until college in the late 1980's. I also loved the ABC show Fridays. I was 12 or 13 then, Fridays humor was a lot more sophmoric and hilarious for a kid my age. Fridays was a kick ass show which deserved to have stayed on for twenty years, but I think they pushed the envelope a bit too far for that era (Cannibal Diner was a bit far....). 1980 was an awful year, the Iranian hostages (and that awful "Tie a Yellow Ribbon song......) and the HOTTEST summer of my life, the hottest day was 108* with full humidity, with night time temps still in the 90's. Fridays filled the void when SNL had a cocaine cardiac arrest after the first cast left and before Eddie Murphy (who for you youngins, USED to be funny, USED is the term here).

My favorite cartoons were Pink Panther (the old 1960's stuff, the newer ones are not as good) and The Roadrunner. Loony Tunes cartoons were good, except for the French Skunk. Watched Fat Albert, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. Didnt like Scooby Doo, that show was lame and don't understand its appeal at all.

So, pretty varied as a kid. Sorry for the ramble, and I hope it was a trip down Memory Lane.

I live in Memphis too. What was the name of that school you hated? I've probably heard of it.

That was Johnny Carson's old routine. "While Jim goes out and wrestles the wild alligator in heat, I'll sit here and drink my banana daiquiris."

Marlin Perkins actually did some pretty dangerous stuff, especially for an old man.
