I actually was not a big fan of his though I liked a few of his songs.

I was surprised to hear he was only 57. I had not heard of him in years so I thought he might have been David Bowie's age.

I also was surprised that the President made mention of him.
When Michael Jackson died, I was surprised that the President did not mention anything about it (as far as I know).

I remember when my mom first heard of Prince and Mom and I were cleaning my room and we had the radio on when suddenly the song Diamonds And Pearls came on and Mom asked "Who on earth is this this is a nice song" and I told her it was Prince and so Diamonds And Pearls became my mother's favorite Prince song. But my actual exposure to Prince was through a song called With This Tear which was a song he wrote for Celine Dion and I was amazed with his talent as a songwriter and he knew how to write excellent ballads for other singers
