Michael Strahan Leaving "Live!" for "Good Morning America"

April 19, 2016

Michael Strahan is ditching "Live! with Kelly and Michael" for a full-time gig on "Good Morning America".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Strahan -- who has made semiweekly appearances on the morning show since 2014 -- will begin his full-time GMA duties in September.

The former New York Giants defensive end, who also works as an analyst on Fox NFL Sunday, joined "Live!" in 2012 after longtime co-host Regis Philbin left. He immediately became a beloved daytime personality, and his chemistry with co-host Kelly Ripa resulted in a huge ratings increase for the series.

Strahan is expected to leave "Live!" over the summer.

"I look forward to continuing to work with the incredible team at GMA. It is an exciting opportunity to be able to bring unique stories and voices to the audience," Strahan said in a statement.

"My time with Live! has been transformative, and my departure will be bittersweet. Kelly has been an unbelievable partner, and I am so thankful to her and the entire team. I am extremely grateful for the amazing support I've received from all of the fans."

Ripa and executive producer Michael Gelman didn’t learn Strahan was leaving until he told them half an hour after today’s taping, according to TMZ. Calling it "a top secret move on Disney's part,” TMZ also says Disney CEO Bob Iger orchestrated the move, offering Strahan “life changing” money (http://www.tmz.com/2016/04/19/michael-strahan-gma-deal/) in the “8 figures" to join Good Morning America full-time.

Ripa (http://www.tmz.com/2016/04/20/oprah-kelly-ripa-michael-strahan-video/) expressed concern when Strahan first joined Good Morning America in 2014, the NY Times reports, adding that the news of Strahan’s exit (http://www.people.com/people/package/article/0,,20981907_21001402,00.html) following Tuesday’s show left her angry (http://www.people.com/people/package/article/0,,20981907_21001517,00.html) because she felt that GMA was being given priority over Live. “Didn’t I tell you this was going to happen?” Ripa said to WABC’s general manager after learning of Strahan's departure on Tuesday, according to The Times. “I told you two years ago this was going to happen.” PLUS: How Ripa’s (http://deadline.com/2016/04/kelly-ripa-michael-strahan-erin-andrews-shay-mitchell-1201741155/) absence (http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/20/media/kelly-ripa-michael-strahan/index.html) could hasten Live’s death (http://www.thewrap.com/how-kelly-ripa-michael-strahan-diva-act/).

Moving Live to the 10 a.m. hour (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kelly-ripa-could-lose-her-886618), as has been speculated amid the Kelly Ripa (http://www.people.com/people/package/article/0,,20981907_21001867,00.html) fallout, would disrupt appointment TV for 4 million viewers, as Cynthia Littleton points out. She adds: “The hurdles for ABC to take over the 9 a.m. hour on its 200-plus affiliate stations for an extra hour of GMA are significant. But more important, pursuing such an effort would break a cardinal rule of television: If something is working, don’t break it. And Live, by any measure, is a workhorse for Disney.” PLUS: Quit calling Kelly Ripa a “diva” (http://www.salon.com/2016/04/22/stop_calling_kelly_ripa_a_diva_the_urge_to_demean_women_for_exercising_power_is_still_going_strong/)!, and this is ABC’s “Ann Curry Moment” (http://deadline.com/2016/04/kelly-ripa-live-michael-strahan-gma-ann-curry-1201742335/) — will Michael Strahan suffer like Matt Lauer?

The media is sure having fun making Kelly Ripa out to be a total bitch (which I don't believe is true). But whatever, it's all so stupid. I haven't watched the show since before Regis Philbin retired. And it was because I was sick of him and not Kelly Ripa.

In doing so, as Emily Yahr points out, "Ripa returned (http://www.nydailynews.com/andy-cohen-michael-strahan-making-mistake-leaving-ke-article-1.2614004) to her show with a speech that was funny, sincere, emotional, practical, relatable and — unexpected for anything in showbiz– extremely candid. Ripa’s behavior the past two days — her “contract negotiations” joke on Thursday and bringing up Strahan’s divorces (http://www.eonline.com/news/760861/kelly-ripa-michael-strahan-keep-talking-about-his-divorces-on-live-and-it-s-pretty-awkward) today — is only the beginning. It's not the most professional way to act, but she's pissed and Strahan is still playing on her field, in her stadium and by her rules.” PLUS: Why Ripa being honest and angry (http://www.eonline.com/news/760932/kelly-ripa-s-gloves-are-off-and-it-s-a-beautiful-thing-why-honest-and-angry-beats-perky-and-passive-any-day) beats being perky and passive.

I've heard about this story and to me I think that when Michael Strahan leaves Live With Kelly And Michael the ratings will skyrocket and Kelly Ripa will be hosting a new and improved show. I used to watch Live when Regis Philbin was on it but as soon as Regis Philbin retired my interest in Live went downhill but I think that when Michael Strahan leaves Live will hold a two week cohost search where different celebrities will try to be a cohost and they will have a contest where viewers watch the celebrity cohost and then have the chance to choose the best celebrity cohost and at the end of two weeks the winning celebrity cohost will be chosen and it would be a smart idea for Live indeed or Disney might give Kelly Ripa her very own solo talk show deal. But I still think Live will always be a hit talk show in ratings no matter what the future may hold for it

Some people in show biz are able to multi-task.

I know that Regis hosted his morning show and did "Millionaire" and Kelly Rippa had her own sitcom, "Hope & Faith", and still hosted "Live!".

Ellen hosted her own show and judged on "American Idol" for a bit.

Just a few...

I guess it's because she wasn't in the loop of him leaving for another gig. She probably felt blindsided, especially since "Live!" got renewed until 2020 shortly before Strahan's announcement.

http://www.thewrap.com/abc-morning-mess-ripa-whoopi-george/

ABC is waking up to a morning mess.

“Good Morning America,” its flagship a.m. show, has lost its ratings momentum against NBC’s mighty “Today.” Kelly Ripa was a no-show for a week on “Live with Kelly and Michael” after bosses maneuvered behind her back to bring cohost Michael Strahan to “GMA.” Once Strahan leaves “Live” later this month, Ripa will face a parade of guest hosts. And “The View” may lose two panelists, with Whoopi Goldberg and Raven-Symone both at risk of exit this year.

How did ABC’s house get so upside-down? Blame a combination of aging hosts (Goldberg is 60), network missteps (the Ripa drama could easily have been avoided) and relentless broadcast pressure (morning shows are one of few remaining TV programs that viewers watch live).

I wish soap operas and game shows would come back. There is no need for all this talk show crap. Have GMA and Today be 2 hrs., 7-9 am, have the affiliates still have Live and be done with it. None of this, expanding the shows stuff. Plus, ever notice how ABCD is giving all this money to The View, giving it to different guests, plus the shows replacing AMC and OLTL yet GH gets nothing. Its pathetic.

Michael Strahan on Schism with Kelly Ripa: "I Don't Know What Happened at the End"
by Liam Mathews
Sept. 21, 2016

Michael Strahan opened up to People about what went wrong at the end of his tenure as co-host of "Live! with Kelly and Michael" this past spring.

The former NFL star started his new job at "Good Morning America" on Sept. 6. His departure from "Live!" to take the "GMA" job was announced on April 19, which came as a surprise to his co-host Kelly Ripa, who took the next day off and was openly unhappy with the disrespectful way ABC executives handled the announcement.

The network did apologize, but the damage was done: Strahan's final day at Live! was moved up several months, and Strahan says in his People interview that his relationship with Ripa is over.

He and Ripa hosted the show together for four years, and won a Daytime Emmy for their hosting just days after the blowup.

"At one point I think we were friends. I don't know what happened at the end. I learned a lot from her, though," Strahan says.

"Toward the end of it all, we didn't really communicate that much. I kinda looked at it like, 'It was what it was.' I come from a business where you have to collaborate. The show was going well? We're all winning. That's all that matters to me."

He says that he was disappointed that he was seen as the "bad guy" in the split, because he doesn't want people to think the breakdown in communication was all his fault or that he abandoned the show, and that he wasn't surprised by Ripa's reaction.

The search for Strahan's replacement at "Live!" is ongoing.

I wonder what went down that he would leave such a high paying job like that.

They seemed to be such good pals and she got him the job. He seemed kind of ungrateful to her, should have clued her in that he was leaving.

Michael Strahan Breaks Silence on "Mishandled" "Live!" Departure, Rift with Kelly Ripa
by Michael Ausiello
January 29, 2020

Four years after tendering his resignation as Kelly Ripa’s "Live!" co-host, Michael Strahan is setting the record straight about the circumstances surrounding his stormy departure and his rumored rift with Ripa.

In a wide-ranging New York Times Magazine profile, Strahan intimated that he was not treated as Ripa’s equal during his four-year stint on the ABC talker. “I didn’t know I was supposed to be a sidekick,” he said, without naming Ripa directly. “I thought I was going there to be a partner.”

Strahan maintained that he “remained the same person I was from Day 1” of "Live!". “But when it was time to go, it was time to go. Certain things that were going on behind the scenes just caught up.”

“One thing I tried to do is have a meeting every few weeks with her,” he added of his and Ripa’s working relationship. “We met a few times, and that was fine. But then eventually she said she didn’t need to meet. Can’t force somebody to do something they don’t want to do.”

Looking back, Strahan admitted to the Times that his exit “could have been handled better.”

For starters, “I didn’t wake up and say, ‘I want a job at GMA,’” he clarified. “I was asked to do it by the people who run the network. It was really not a choice. It was a request. But it was treated as if I was the guy who walked in and said, ‘I’m leaving.’ That part was totally misconstrued, mishandled in every way. People who should have handled it better have all apologized, but a lot of the damage had already been done. For me, it was like: Move on. Success is the best thing. Just keep on moving.”

Strahan insisted that he harbors no ill will toward Ripa. “If people think, ‘Oh, he hates her’ — I don’t hate her,” he said. “I do respect her for what she can do at her job. I cannot say enough about how good she is at her job.”

Asked what he specifically learned from Ripa during his time on the show, Strahan responded, “Oh, I’m sure the same things she learned from Regis Philbin. If you look at the show, it really hasn’t changed since Regis started the damn thing. He created this formula. It’s kind of a plug-and-play. You learn how to craft a story. ‘What did you do last night?’ ‘Oh, I had a glass of water.’ But you learn to tell the story to make it seem like the most interesting glass of water. Those are things that I learned from her. She’s brilliant in that way.”
