View Full Version : Your Favorite 60s Sitcom That Was Both in B&W and Color
Adamantium 04-18-2016, 04:19 PM Which is your favorite sixties sitcom that started off in black and white and then mid-run switched to color?
(I’m not counting Get Smart or Hogan’s Heroes which both featured their debut episode in black and white and the rest of their series in color)
The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet (13 Seasons in B&W, 1 Season in Color)*
The Andy Griffith Show (5 Seasons in B&W, 3 Seasons in color)
The Beverly Hillbillies (3 Seasons in B&W, 6 Seasons in color)
Bewitched (2 Seasons in B&W, 6 Seasons in color)
F Troop (1 Season in B&W, 1 Season in color)
Gilligan’s Island (1 Season in B&W, 2 Seasons in color)
Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. (1 Season in B&W, 4 Seasons in color)
Hazel (1 Season in B&W, 4 Seasons in color)
I Dream of Jeannie (1 Season in B&W, 4 Seasons in color)
The Joey Bishop Show (2 Seasons in B&W, 2 Seasons in color)**
The Lucy Show (1 Season in B&W, 5 Seasons in color)
My Favorite Martian (2 Seasons in B&W, 1 Season in color)
My Three Sons (5 Seasons in B&W, 7 Seasons in color)
Petticoat Junction (2 Seasons in B&W, 5 Seasons in color)
*Even though The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet is technically a '50s show, I count it because the change to color occurred in the '60s.
**“The Joey Bishop Show” had a different story. It started off in black and white, switched to color for its second season. Stayed in color for its third season and went back to black and white for its fourth season.

treky 05-26-2016, 03:09 AM THE LUCY SHOW was filmed in color from the start, but was shown in black-and-white for the first season because most of the CBS affiliates weren't able to broadcast color shows.

I thought the first three seasons were broadcast in black and white but seasons two and three were really shot in color. The DVDs have the first season in black and white and the rest in color.

The thread does say sitcoms. "Superman" and "Perry Mason" are both dramas, and in the 1960s.
pkripper001 05-26-2016, 10:57 AM I agree that ''Perry Mason'' was a drama,
except the 1 time time the lady said,I don't know,I don't know.That was funny.
I am to blame too about ''Superman''.
I included it because it was based on a comic book and by the second-season,
most of the villains became comic bunglers and it also had humorous stories

You've got it right. The first season was filmed in B/W. At some point Lucy recognized the syndication value of filming in color, and the 2nd and 3rd season were filmed in color. However, CBS either got B/W prints or turned off the film chain color burst, and broadcast them in black and white.
Similar things were happening at ABC, in prime time animation. At least the first season of the Flintstones was in B/W on the original ABC run, as were the Bugs Bunny Show (probably both seasons), Top Cat, and probably The Jetsons. All were produced in color, and later reran in color.
