If you’ve ever laughed at a TV show from the ’70s, there’s a good chance you have Norman Lear to thank. (At one point, he had nine series on the air.)
Here, the 93-year-old Emmy-winning creator/ producer/legend — who will be honored at the TV Land Icon Awards (Sunday at 9pm ET, in celebration with EW) — recalls a few of his favorite moments from his provocative, socially conscious sitcoms.
“A FRIEND IN NEED” (1975)
That was a great scene, a great moment. They performed it so well. The problem the network had with that was it was so f—ing funny. Why was it funny? Sherman Hemsley.
CBS’ concerns with the scene were louder and fiercer on paper than they were after they saw it…. It was a word that nobody was saying, and nobody would dare say. And Sherman didn’t dare — he just did it.

He said no one was saying that word on TV but I believe it was said on Sanford and Son before the Jeffersons started on CBS

It actually was the first time. Do your research!
TVFactFan 04-17-2016, 09:46 PM The N word was used on the Brady Bunch in 69

No, it wasn't.

You might want to do your research before telling someone else to do theirs.
"A Friend in Need" originally aired on Jan 18, 1975.
The word was used in 2 back-to-back episodes of Sanford & Son a year earlier.
Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe 4 Jan. 1974
Fred's feathers get ruffled when an old friend from St. Louis comes to town claiming to be Lamont's actual father.
Fred Sanford, Legal Eagle 11 Jan. 1974
When Lamont gets a traffic ticket, Fred convinces him to fight it in court, where the poor man's Perry Mason steps up to defend his son against the system.
I'm not saying these examples are the first time but it definitely occurred before The Jeffersons episode.

I didn't think he said the first time was in that episode because I know for a fact that it was said on All in the Family before as well.

Thank you Zoneboy. I wasn't going to waste my time proving something to someone who is posting from the mental institution
tenter 04-18-2016, 12:24 PM Thank you Zoneboy. I wasn't going to waste my time proving something to someone who is posting from the mental institution
Actually you are the one posting from mental and drug rehab institution. You said Brady Bunch uses n-word in '69
TVFactFan 04-18-2016, 12:26 PM tenter and svefan are roommates in the mental institution
Be patient with them

TVFactFan is the only one in mental institution!!
Svenfan is trying to help get some info, but he's not mentality, and so have I. You don't really listen to me or him. We tried hard to get fun posts and you keep bothering and pestering us on purpose

You are way nicer than TVFactFan. Don't believe TVFactFan said about us.

Yeah you can't even spell my name right you f@ggot. I'm done trying to be nice to you. It's so hard to be nice to you because you aren't even nice to anyone else even people who agree with you you aren't nice to. It's unbelievable. You swear at everyone, and they get banned? What's wrong with this picture? I believe strongly that the person who starts crap should get banned. For those reading this, I'm trying to make a point, I'm not trying to be insulting. TVFactFan just thinks everyone is in the mental institution who doesn't agree with him, and Tenter and Zoneboy are actually pretty nice.
tenter 04-18-2016, 01:32 PM TVFactFan either apologize for calling us mental institution, and DELETE THE POSTS THAT YOU SAID and I will delete my posts I said and pretend this whole conversation with you NEVER HAPPENED. I don't want everybody to see these posts in public.

Getting back on topic and ignoring all the arguing and name calling, the word was said by Sammy Davis Jr. in 1972 on All in the Family in the episode Sammy's Visit. That's probably one of the earliest times it was said although it might have been said earlier on another show I'm unaware of.
TVFactFan 04-18-2016, 02:20 PM I'm not apologizing for the truth. Lol
