View Full Version : Is your pharmacy strict or lenient on privacy?
Family Ties Forever! 04-17-2016, 01:55 PM I've noticed that different pharmacies have different rules and protocols. Some are very strict while others seem too lenient regarding privacy.
I was on the phone yesterday with my brother. He went to pick up a prescription of his and the pharmacist made him get off the phone. Yet, at the pharmacy I go to, sees no problem with that or with announcing someone's medications where anyone standing in the area can here. I just don't think it's anyone's business (ie: a stranger) to hear the names of my Glaucoma eye drops, or other medication that I have to take. It's one thing if I want to tell someone, but I don't think the pharmacy should announce my first and last name and say what my medications are. I've noticed I'm not the only one they do that to. I have asked them a few times to please not announce it.
They don't call anything out at the pharmacy I use. You go to the pick-up window and ask if it's ready, then you show your Id and pay for it. You could always switch to a different pharmacy if it doesn't meet your needs.

Is this a local mom & pop type pharmacy or a chain? If it's the latter then I would call their corporate number and voice my concerns over it. I've never heard of a pharmacy giving all that info when letting some know their order is ready. We get ours at CVS and Walmart and if I have to wait they usually just announce that my order is ready and just give my last name when doing so. I'd have a fit if that pharmacy of yours let the entire place know that I was picking up certain male prescriptions.
Family Ties Forever! 04-19-2016, 08:03 AM Thanks. If things don't get better, I think I will change pharmacies.
While they don't announce it over a PA system, they still say it loud enough that anyone in the area can hear.
shotzette 04-19-2016, 08:59 AM Complain to the store manager, or, if it's a larger chain, complain on their home page. Disclosing anything about your health issues or medications is a HIPPA violation which could cause the store to be fined and the pharmacist to lose their license. You could also complain on Yelp, but no one takes their reviews seriously any more.
I'm sorry that you went through that. Everyone has the right to privacy and dignity.
Kate From CT 04-19-2016, 04:17 PM Rite Aid is pretty good. They don't call your name out or the prescription. You go up to the counter and they get what you need.
Family Ties Forever! 04-19-2016, 06:00 PM Thanks. It's a larger chain pharmacy. I spoke with the customer service manager because the store manager wasn't in. She said she would speak to him.
IllinoisTVFan 04-19-2016, 06:49 PM I hadn't thought of this happening as it never happened to me but I remember a related incident. I used to live in an area full of lots of welfare leeches. I'm talking able bodied who just refused to work (and there were jobs). Anyway when one of them went to go get a prescription the one pharmacist would call something like "Medicaid prescription". While I get outing the lazy what if someone was truly disabled? I think this now as I am somewhat disabled and would hate this to happen to me.
Babalu 04-23-2016, 03:58 PM I've never heard of a pharmacy doing this. They just call your name. On the rare occasions I wait at a pharmacy I usually stand close enough so they don't have to shout my name. I'm also not a browser. I get what I need and get out.

"BABALU?.....VIAGRA!.....BABALU?"
Nordy 04-23-2016, 05:10 PM Since I use Walmart pharmacy for all my prescriptions I usually don't have to worry that much about it. Since I used to work there too they usually say "Hi, Brad picking up the usual??"

I thought I told you I'm not picking up your pills anymore.

Like a woman wouldn't want her name called out if she was picking up a yeast infection medicine or something!!!
That's sold without prescription now though anyway! ;) When I was a young girl I had to get a prescription for that, I was embarrassed for the male pharmacist to fill my prescription, he was like as old as my Dad!!! I guess it would have been a lot worse even if he were a young good looking man  :D

His name wasn't Mr. Gower, was it?
IllinoisTVFan 04-23-2016, 07:43 PM There are many embarrassing prescriptions like for constipation or diarrhea or a STD or many more. My prescriptions have only been for my allergies, arthritis and psoriasis.

Yeah, like that!! An old Mom & Pop Pharmacy. It was embarrassing that the older pharmacist man would know I had something wrong with my "you know what"!!  :D
