I think they're successful because nobody expected them to produce quality scripted dramas so they took great pains to craft good shows. I love Salem. As a horror fan, the few horror shows we've gotten are either too tame and bogged down with boring drama (Damien, the cancelled 666 Park Avenue), comedy homages that ran out of steam (the first season of Scream Queens). Salem doesn't hold back. The gore, violence, and sex isn't for everyone but there's character development, it's beautifully shot, and well-acted. It's also scary at times, and WGN does not reveal spoilers, so you don't know what's going to happen. I think it's good they are making new shows that doesn't always cater to the hip, niche crowd of viewers.
