The Fox reality show democratized pop-culture stardom, which we now take for granted, says Dave Holmes. In addition, Idol brought the country together, whether you watched or not. “In 2016,” he says, "we’re an uneasy coalition of rabid fanbases who barely overlap; I myself am a popular-culture fanatic who’s never watched House Of Cards or seen a second of an Avengers film, and I don’t feel like I’ve missed a step. But in the heyday of Idol, whether you watched it every week or avoided, hated, and mocked it, you knew about it. Even if you’d never seen the show, you could do a Simon Cowell impression, simply through cultural osmosis. Idol was either appointment viewing or a sign of the end-times.” PLUS: Idol is dying a slow, painful death (http://www.vocativ.com/306098/the-slow-painful-death-of-american-idol/), Idol changed the music industry and then made itself obsolete (http://www.salon.com/2016/04/06/how_american_idol_destroyed_itself_the_reality_game_show_changed_the_rules_for_music_and_made_itself_obsolete/), Idol has been replaced by the grand democracy of the internet (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/07/arts/television/american-idol-social-media-internet.html), why LGBT performers (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/why-lgbt-performers-never-won-american-idol-20160404) never won, Ryan Seacrest succeeded (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2016/04/06/american-idol-host-ryan-seacrest-is-forgettable-and-thats-why-hes-so-good-at-his-job/) because he’s so forgettable, Randy Jackso (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/randy-jackson-on-american-idol-i-still-think-its-the-best-show-20160405)n compares the original judges’ table to the Beatles, recalling Idol movie From Justin to Kelly (http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/from-justin-to-kelly-revisiting-that-wtf-american-idol-movie-20160406), "Crying Girl" reunites with Sanjaya (http://photos.toofab.com/galleries/reality_stars__then__now#tab=most_recent&id=1605954), American Idol ruined how we listen to singers, and how the Mariah Carey-Nicki Minaj season (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/how-pop-stars-killed-american-idol-20160407) helped kill the Idol franchise.

I stopped watching after season 9.

However, I did watch the finale and I have to admit I did enjoy it somewhat. The Randy, Paula, & Simon reunion was well worth watching. I have to say it sorta brought a small tear to my eye.

I didn't watch to see who the winner was this season...
Clearly, the winner of "American Idol" is and will always be Ryan Seacrest.

So long "Idol", you're first 9 years were awesome!

I stopped watching when I was like 8 or whatever.

I only watched once when they did a week dedicated to Carole King, who is my all-time favorite singer.

"American Idol" started out entertaining, and I used to enjoy it, but I've lost interest in it.
