Which do you like better? Diane or Rebecca?

I liked Rebecca but Diane WAS in Troop Beverly Hills you know...IMO her best movie ever....

Hey Guys! In my personal opnion I like Diane alot more.I really enjoy her era alot more even though that is not why I like her character more.She was very enjoyable,However I defintilly do enjoy Rebbeca as well.I think she is a great character as well.Espeacially and defintllly and espeacially in the early years.I think she,s a great character in the beging not nessaserally in one particular season,but i guess her character was somewhat good in all seasons still in my personal opnion she really went down fast from being a great character to kind of a vauge and fuzzy and underdevolped character and didn,t hold up as well or was as interesting in the later years.I did like her still definitlly,She just didn,t hold up to Shelley Longs Diane character as well i still think.I don,t mind Kirste Alley as an actress at all,but I still think Shelley Long is an defintilly better actress still that is just my personal preferance.I really do like some of the early Rebbeca episodes since she was such an greatly devolped character in the begining.I still think she was an great replacement for my favorite actress tv diva if I may say so Shelley Long and character Diane Chambers,but in my opinion I really really really think Kirstie Alley and her Rebbeca were picked on alot and unfairlly disliked.To each his or her own.I just think people judged her to harshlly in the begining simpley because she was replacing Diane.I have to admit I was defintilly EXTREMLLY EXTREMLLY EXTREMLLY UPSET AT FIRST.I THOUGHT I WOULD DEFINTLLY HATE HER CHARACTER AND FOR AWHILE I DIDN,T REALLY HER,BUT I EVENTUALLY ACHUALLY CAME TO LIKE HER ALOT AND I DEFINTLLY ENJOY WATCHING HER ALLTHOUGH I STILL LIKE DIANE AND HER ERA DEFINTLLY ALOT MORE.CHEERS HAD GREAT CHARACTERS ALL THE WAY THROUGH EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY HAVE NOT BEEN AS DEVOLPED AS THEY WERE IN THE BEGINGING IF THAT IS POSSIBLE.I just thought Diane was an more interesting,likeable,funner,funnier,interesting,cool,devolped,caring

I think your opinion counts, but I will have to disagree. I would rather watch the episodes with Rebecca in them. Carla making fun of Diane was getting really old. WE KNOW SHE HATES HER! See now Carla makes even funnier jokes about becca because rebecca always had a comeback. Diane really didn't. Though I like Kirstie Alley in Cheers, I like Shelly Long as an actress better. The only movie I only liked when Kirstie Alley was in was Summer School. It was like She and Mr. Shoot like Rebecca and Sam. Rebecca taunting sam and such and such. All in all IMO i like rebecca best:happyface :happyface :happyface

Hey Dr.Frasier Crane(AKA Ben) how about making this topic a sticky because it is constantly being reposted every few months.

I liked Rebecca more for the fact that the Rebecca Years episodes made me laugh a lot harder. They weren't focused on just 1 or 2 charachters but the entire cast was equally shown in evry episode. I thought that the Rebecca Years were better. definately, definately better.haha!

Plus during the diane years the only characters you really knew were sam and diane. The other characters just seemed like "atmosphere" during these years. But I have nothing wrong with people who like diane, if your more into that soap oprea stuff I don't really care, I am into comedy :)

I liked both of them and i cant decide because Diane had such great chemistry with Sam but she wasnt as funny as Rebecca!plus the rebecca years were better cuz they focused on the other characters as well.

I can't really say, I think they're both so enjoyable.

I can say, though, that as for Rebecca, I'm appreciatin' and enjoyin' her more and more as I see "Cheers" on N@N. I think she's quite attractive, and her humor is wonderful. Take for instance when she and Sam watched Carla's kids for a night---at the very end of the show, the lights go out, a voice says, "Be afraid! Be very afraid!", Rebecca inquires what happened, and we hear the following:

Sam: "Well, either it's Carla's kids, or it's a prowler."

Rebecca: "Ohhh, I hope it's a prowlerrrr!"

I prefer the Rebecca years. I liked the character better, plus, the show seemed more like an ensemble show than it did during the Diane years. I also love Frasier, Lilith, and Woody. Coach was OK, but Diane annoyed the heck outta me.

Like people really need a 13 year old to explain to us what is funny and what is not.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the writing and jokes were much more biting and crisp during the Diane years. The exchanges between Sam and Diane and Carla and Diane are far more humorous in my opinion.

There was no real tension with Rebecca. It was all her crap with her wanting to land a rich man and Sam chasing her and acting like a dope that he never was during the Diane time.

Diane jumping Sam's bones all the time? Get real. Are you watching the same show? That is completely false. When they weren't dating she put him off all the time and when they were, she tried to be as proper as possible with a few exceptions.
This is Diane- you know, the stuffy, arrogrant, prude who deep down is like everyone else.

How crazy did Diane make Sam? All the times she refused to marry him. All the times they made each other jealous.
The other times when she was involved with Fraiser or other men like Sam's brother.

You are way off, and not even being accurate

I loved the chemistry between Sam and Diane. Sam and Rebecca never had that. I do admire Kristy (or is it Kirsty-- which is how the Cheers' credits spell her name) Alley. She's a great person and actress. I just never liked her character.

And the Diane years were when Coach was around. Everyone has to love Coach. He was just so sweet and naive.

Cheers is Cheers no matter what. It was the greatest and funniest show ever made so it was still going to be funny with rebecca in it, and it was. BUT the diane years were the funniest and better years for Cheers. You see in the last years it was still hilarious but even the producers said that they started depending on stunts etc... (remember Carla and the giant fan?). The first years with Sam Diane Coach Normie and Cliff were the best and even after Nicolasanto died (may he rest in peace) and woody came in there was still the basic characters there (except for Fraiser). I am a TOTAL Diane and Sam fan!!! to me their chemistry was unforgetable. The catfight moments between her and Carla were memorable. and her putting down cliff was hilarious (remember DNA?)! And diane was ALOT funnier than rebecca when making sam feel inferior! I'm not saying the rebecca years were bad, i mean seeing her fall apart like she did was funny, but again Cheers was going to be funny Regardless. DIANE WAS BETTER IN THE BAR THAN REBECCA!!!! The show was funnier with her on it and that is why i say

I mean Diane and Carla was just how do i describe their relationship mortal enemies in every way except for one thing when it came to Sammy.Which made classic comedy! Unless Diane was dating him or was about to proclaim her love for him or vice versa they agreed on this, if Sammy was dating somebody else and they both sensed that they were getting close and sam hooked, than they both went into defense or i guess attack mode agaisn'st the girl. I mean remember the Janet Eldrigde woman running for mayor of boston episode? They were a team in that episode they even made fun of her together. Bottom line was Carla wanted Sammy to remain Sammy so in other words date Bimbos who barely knew their A B C's and Diane wanted Sam for herself. One of the best episodes was the one with Carla's "Open Grave"! and #1DianeChambersfan "Showdown"(is that what that episode is called?) parts 1 and 2 is one of my favorites too!

Hi everyone, I'm new here, and I might as well just jump right in;
I like Rebecca ALOT better. She seemed like a more interesting character, and her episodes make me laugh more. Diane was always kind of annoying, and I've always preferred to see a Rebecca episode more. I don't really hate Diane, but she was never extremely interesting. I geuss it wasn't just Rebecca that made the episodes more funny, but the show does appeal to me more in the Rebecca seasons.

Diane! Rebecca has always been too whiny for my tastes. Since I've been watching Cheers on N@N Rebecca is growing on me a little, but she was too clingy, needy and whiny. At least Diane tried to make something of her life unlike Rebecca who expected a man to take care of her

I just relized that my previous post made no sense the girl in the picture is Dakota Fanning. I became a big fan after seeing her in I am Sam. Odly enough the first thing that caught my interest was how much she looked like the child I imagined the two of them would have. Dakota was actually able to read at age 2. She is also the youngest person to ever be nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

DEFINITELY Rebecca. She was more mean than Diane and I love bitches from hell on TV shows lol. That's how Beatrice Arthur was so good in Maude.

Dianne by far, her character was well defined and worked perfectly with Sam, whereas Backseat Becky was always looking for a "hook", the character could be funny at times, but wasnt really as important to the show as Diane was, in summing up, after Dianne, the show was still funny, but it lost it's heart!

I didn't really like Rebecca that much, she complains a bit to much for me.

BUT... I voted for Diane because I have a theory about this:

When Diane was on the show, it was the story of Sam & Diane, two mismatched people who fell in love and happened to work at a bar.

When Rebecca was on the show-- even though she was cooler in the beginning-- it was just... a bunch of anecdotes about some bar.

Not that it wasn't still funny at times, but losing Diane lost the STORY. Plus, it changed Sam's focus-- from trying to learn to be worthy of a different kind of woman than any he'd ever known-- to being sleazier than ever in trying to get with Rebecca for purely physical reasons. Sam was a more enjoyable character, to my mind, when he was striving for something positive...

Errrr I can't vote, they were both great but both served different purposes and both were exact oposites.

Dianes naivity and refreshing outlook being made of by Carla and the others was always amusing, and Sam's sex jokes toward boths she and Diane were equally great. One of the most memorable scenes in Cheers is when Diane walks out the door and says she will be back. Very heartbreaking.

The first thing that I would like to do is welcome you to the board. I am sure that you will have loads of fun! It seems that for the longest time, this site has been very slow. Maybe you can breath some new life into it! My favorite page to post on is that of "Gimme a Break!". Are you at all familiar with that series? Earlier today, I started a new thread on that page telling my buddies that we have a new member with us. The last time I checked, that thread had one view by someone other than me. I would be very interested in what you think of it!

I like both characters, but the transition from Shelley Long/Diane to Kirstie Alley/Rebecca, provided opportunity for fresh new storylines, and a new direction. How much longer could the Sam-Diane flirtation thing go on?

Im sorry but I am not familiar with "Gimme a Break". I cant put any input to that.

I know that Diane leaving provided new story lines but as brilliant as the writers were, Im sure they could have made equally entertaining episodes.
There are tons of storylines they could have gone with.

The let down for me for seasons 6-11 was that things became more and more silly. Not that I dont enjoy it but I prefer the earlier seasons where there was character growth in Sam. Seasons 1-5 was a perfect blend of heart-warming stories with the right amount of comedy in it. Just my opinion.

I love Diane because she reminds me so much of myself in terms of her attire. I dressed just like that for work back in the day and when ever I am watching Cheers and listening to Diane I always had pen and paper to jot down her words....I really increased my vocab watching Diane. Diane was strong and not whinny like Rebecca, I could not stand her always crying and whinning. She appeared to be very week, while Diane was very strong in her personal life.

personally I liked diane chambers. i know she could get really annoying sometimes but...no one could ever be as annoying as Rebecca Howe. her whining made me sick! and she wasnet near as pretty

There's nothing whatsoever annoying about Diane, she was just perfect....:D

Rebecca. There are moments where I find Diane irritating.

I really like Diane. I hardly watch the episodes with Rebecca. It was still a funny and a great show even after Diane left, it's just preference.

Diane is also my favorite. However, I still enjoyed the show very much after she left.

I loved both.
I vote for Diane, but also found Kirstie Alley as Rebecca very funny. It was clever that they created a character so different from Diane. The show didn't suffer without Diane at all (but she still gets my vote).

Diane wins for me! Rebecca seemed pathetic and desperate about finding a man. She also whines a lot.

Regarding the poll question, with two parties, it's "Who's the better?" not "Who's the best?" :)

Can I say that I liked the first YEAR of Rebecca better than Diane? However; once her character devolved into that whiny, greedy, crass trainwreck, NOPE! :rolleyes:

They were so different, and I enjoyed both of them. Rebecca's personality fit in so much better with the people in the bar, once she showed her true colors.
