The second season of Fear the Walking Dead arrives at a strange time. The most recent season finale of its older-sister series, plain old The Walking Dead, just aired last Sunday, a frustrating cliff-hanger of an episode that has a lot of fans (this one included) contemplating how much more of the show they can stomach. Happily for the show, then, FTWD is just that in its first two new episodes, distancing itself in geography and tone from its heavy, nihilistic predecessor in crucial and gripping ways. Great veteran actors like Colman Domingo, Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, and Rubén Blades teamed up with promising younger folks like Mercedes Mason, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and the peculiar Frank Dillane to create something low to the ground and unbearably tense-without overdoing the violence.
