Antenna TV has the following in its listing for Johnny Carson tomorrow night (Sunday, April 3, 2016):

(First Aired: May. 1, 1974)
Musician Buddy Rich; actor Gabe Kaplan; actress Cindy Williams; performer Kreskin; Don Ashworth.

Is this the SAME Cindy Williams? I know she had been in a few movies and TV shows by that point, including American Graffiti, but she was well known enough to be a guest on The Tonight Show???

Gabe Kaplan wouldn't have been that popular in 1974 either I don't think? Didn't he become well known when Welcome back Kotter started in 1975?

Funny they are advertising him on the Tonight Show as an actor. I figured he would be listed as a stand up comic?

Kaplan got really popular, before Kotter, on Tonight and other talk shows. The material was largely sweathog stuff that eventually turned into Kotter. Not quite as intense a rise as Freddie Prinz, but a similar story.

Yeah, I remember him a little bit from the Talk show circuit !! Did he do any acting before Kotter though? I always thought he was a stand up comic and Kotter was his first acting gig?

Anger issues? That comment was unnecessary.

Yeah, she had been in American Graffiti the year before, so was certainly known enough by then. She was in The Conversation, which came out around then so maybe she was promoting it. Also, you look at the other guests, and it's kind of screaming the need for a cute young girl.

Well, you've got a point there. I know she was in a handful of movies, I just didn't think she was a "name" yet. I'm not familiar with The Conversation.

I don't recall Kaplan acting before Kotter.

Kaplan was a standup only, and a very successful one. He couldn't act at all and was reluctant to do a sitcom but it was too good of a career move. He was often called the worst actor on TV but the show was a huge hit so no one cared.

That's why I kept watching. Yes, she was nervous and seemed to be trying too hard not to be boring. But I find it interesting to see the earlier version of a celebrity before fame took over their life.

Being informed of what is happening in your community is more important than a 42 year-old Cindy Williams interview, so that was probably a good choice.

Not quite 27, still only 26. She was very young and very inexperienced. And I'm afraid to say I was very much born by then. :o

The magic trick failed, so maybe it would have saved everyone some embarrassment if she had stayed in her seat. Not that I'm blaming her; she wasn't the magician.

In this case, though, the show had substantial historical value. I feel certain that Kreskin ' s suit represented a tiny yet crucial step in the direction of what would eventually evolve into the leisure suit.

As for historical value, I was intrigued by Cindy Williams' defense of the sexist titles Mrs. and Miss over Ms, which she said she thought sounded stupid. Ms was brand new back then, but now, more than four decades later, it's the norm and Mrs. and Miss sound antiquated and are rarely used anymore. I would love to know her thoughts on this in 2016. I would bet her feelings have changed!

Yep. I'm guessing it was a "trick" that didn't have an elaborate plan. And without anything behind it, even with a novice doing it, there was a 50% chance it would work. I'm thinking Kreskin was just counting on the odds being in his favor, but they weren't. Or did he really think he could control Cindy's mind?

The first trick did work!!! They pulled a girl from the audience named Lisa for the first trick and it did work!!!;) The second one with Cindy didn't apparently ! I do not recall this magician at all!!! I'm thinking he never went on to make it big?

Gabe Kaplan was FANTASTIC!!!! He stole the show!! Tickled my funny bone!!! :D

Cindy was cute, but she was nervous and went on too much about her "musk perfume" and how cruel it was to small animals! I love animals and all, but it kind of brought the show down a little, got it to hit a sad note, but after a while she was a little more comfortable! ;) She came off as a typical California, valley type girl!! ( A real valley girl, not the stereotyped , exaggerated version like the movie "Valley Girl" portrays )

Buddy Rich, he was entertaining!! A shame he didn't play his drums though ,but he was plugging his new nightclub!! ;)

And is it just me or was Doc Severinsen sort of cute/hot??? :) I was a little girl back than and he was like from my parents generation , I thought of him as an old guy!!! LOL!!!! :D But now seeing him I was like OK Doc wasn't bad looking back than !!!! ;)

May, 1974 when this aired , I was one month shy of my 12th Birthday!!! :) It was fun going back in the day like that!!! :) Glad I watched it!!! ;)

You are probably too young to remember the show kung Fu? IDK if you ever saw it in reruns? But a lot of Gabe's material was a parody on Kung Fu, and Gabe was really good, very funny! ;) :D

And Euell Gibbons came up with Gabe and also in Johnny's monologue ,he was a guy that was really into natural foods, and did commercials for Grape Nuts cereal!! He was the butt of a lot of jokes back than!!! ;) :D

I got all the jokes, due to my age, but younger people watching might not!! ! That's why I was saying on another thread one time that the Tonight show esp. older eps. might go over the younger people that post here heads!!!;) And other posters were arguing up and down with me,:( but I knew what I was talking about!! :) ;)

Johnny Carson is my all-time favorite late-night host. I was VERY depressed when he ended his show, and I shed a few tears when he died. He was one of those rare celebrities who made his viewers feel like they were friends. He had a very quick wit, but his humor was never, ever mean-spirited. He never made his guests feel uncomfortable. And something I loved was how he would often have regular folks on as guests. He did not treat them any differently than the biggest stars he would have on.

Bonnie, you and I are about the same age. I'm just a year younger. It's funny that you remember all those jokes about Euell Gibbons because so do I! It has to mean something that two people who were only 11 or 12 year-old kids at the time can remember him so well! You never hear his name mentioned anymore, but back then (and I think our memories are backing this up) he was a household name. I recall a sketch on the Carol Burnett Show where they did a take-off on his Grape Nuts commercial. I think it was Tim Conway playing Euell Gibbons, and he was eating everything in sight. :) I And I can remember Euell Gibbons died there were jokes going around about how he died, jokes (of course) having to do with something he ate as he was known for eating virtually anything in his backyard. He died at a not very advanced age (mid 60s?), so it got people questioning his diet.

And yes, I remember Kung Fu! That was David Carradine. I used to watch that show often. It only ran for about two seasons, but left a big impression on me!

Do you remember Apple's Way by any chance? I can hear the theme music in my head as I type this

Many if not most famous and successful actors are uncomfortable being interviewed, especially by someone as legendary as Johnny Carson. When they're acting they're told what to do, what to say and where to stand. When they're being interviewed they're being themselves and they have no clue what to do. That's one of many good reasons not to take actor's political ramblings seriously. They're generally parroting what they've been told.

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=15058

Oh wow, that's interesting. I assume it was just a one-shot for Valerie, maybe playing one of Apple kids' friend? There was someone on that show who was a regular -- one of the kids -- who became famous later on. I'm thinking maybe it was Helen Hunt? I remember Ronny Cox played the father. I think his character's name was George Apple. And I can see the mother's face, but don't remember the name of the actress. And I believe there was a grandfather living in their home, which was (I think) a mill converted into a house.

One episode that stands out in my mind was where George Apple thinks he's seen a UFO. He feels the responsible thing to do is report it to the authorities and to the local press that he's seen this flying saucer in the area. But everybody in town thinks he nuts. One of his kids comes home from school one day upset because the kids at school are teasing him about his father, calling him "apple saucer!" LOL And no, this show was a drama, not a sitcom. It was produced by Earl Hammer, creator of The Waltons, which was a huge hit at the time. CBS was hoping they'd score another hit show out of him. It wound up only running two seasons, or maybe just one and 1/2 seasons.

I did like the show, though. But I remember there was criticism the first year that the father was too perfect, always right (like the dad on Father Knows Best, I guess). So when it returned for the second season, they tried to make the father more human, less perfect. In the season opener, he got trapped under a shed or cellar out in the woods, trying to hide from a tornado, and he had to be rescued. It was a bit of a turnaround from the first season when Mr. Apple would have been the one doing the rescuing.

My gosh, I can't believe I even remember this much about that show. And I've got that theme song in my head again! Sheesh, it's been off the air 41 years (since late '74/early '75)! It's funny the things that stick in your memory. Another theme song I remember after all these years is Roots, which was 1977.

It had not been cut and was quite long (and beautiful!) in her Cannon episode that originally aired in March 1974.

No ,not long .Longer and fuller than when she played Shirley though. Bangs and almost shoulder length if I remember correctly? Like a pageboy haircut! It was very cute! ;)
