The following contains spoilers for a TV show that aired its series finale two years ago, just FYI. Two years ago today, millions of viewers tuned in one last time to at long last discover how Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) met the mother of his children. But over the course of How I Met Your Mother’s highly anticipated series finale, that titular mother, who fans had been waiting for for nine years, ends up dying young of an unspecified disease, and Ted, in middle-age, rekindles a romance with his incompatible ex from the start of the show: Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders). The show aired a series finale that went down in television history, but surely not in the way that its creators intended.

6. How I Met Your Mother

When the premise of your entire show is a selectively told backstory from the past that goes on for season after season, it’s no wonder why fans are so invested in the culminating moment that reveals who the mother actually is! But unfortunately for all the die hard fans out there, the climax, was more than a slight let down. As it turned out, while Ted did meet the children’s mother, Tracy, in an endearing romantic moment under a yellow umbrella, the series montages to the fact that Tracy is now dead and Ted is interested in pursuing their “Aunt Robin.” Say what? Not to mention that fans were shortchanged when they never really discovered if Barney had evolved beyond his womanizing ways. This series finale was a serious let down, and fans are still trying to fully recover from such a devastating blow!

18. TOO LONG: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

The Cast of How I Met Your Mother From the very first episode, audiences already wanted to know exactly how Ted Mosby met his wife and the mother of his children. Thanks to a unique premise and instant chemistry among the cast, How I Met Your Mother was an instant hit with critics and viewers alike.

The quality took a big dip in later seasons, however– especially during that final season. Most viewers stuck around, though, because they wanted to know how exactly Ted met the mother of his future children. Then, audiences finally found this out during the 9th and final season of the show.

The moment the two locked eyes for the first time made for a satisfying moment– almost satisfying enough to forgive an overall dreadful season. Unfortuantely, this all happened early on in the finale.

From there, the finale just got worse and worse until, suddenly, there was a fast forward and we discover that the mother dies. We then realize that Ted only tells his kids how he met their mother so that he could sway them into letting him date their Aunt Robin. What a disappointing way to end a show.
